Looked to me that the French side cleverly borrowed the "Let's not show up today" tactics that the US team employed yesterday. On a lighter note, I couldn't resist editing this news blurb:

(BBC)-Peter Crouch says his robotic dancing career is over - and will only be revived if England win the World Cup.
Liverpool striker Crouch has become a cult figure among England fans because of his eccentric goal celebration, but now he feels it is time to get serious. He explained: "It's not about robotic dancing. It is about scoring goals and winning matches. It's an important time for everyone now. "It's serious business, though we might all do it if we win the World Cup. I still promise to look like a wounded stork navigating a pile of jagged boulders whenever I'm on the pitch."

Watching Brazil play right after France makes an interesting contrast. Makes you wonder how we could score 3 times against them 8 years ago.

(to be fair though, we were refused a penalty. right? right?)

Brazil ended up being not that great tonight. Croatia could well have got a draw or even won the game with a bit more luck. Anyway, the predicitons table...

yeah, indeed. Still, an average Brazilian team runs twice as fast as an average French squad...

Oh, and it seems we finally know why Malouda won't play tonight, he suffers from haemorrhoids (sp). Ha! I can understand why it was kept secret.

Denis

I love Guitar Wolf from the Erath!

Someone did run on the pitch tonight, I wonder if it was Kwella Dwella.

I heard Malouda just coudln't be arsed.

Pissed me off though 'cos he is in my team. Oh well, Kaka cheered me up. And Lucio.

No, wasn't me.

I was sitting in the brazilian end of the stadium. Which was cool, but a bit quiet during most times of the match. Not too much singing and shouting, because their team gave them not much to be excited about most of the time. Only at the beginning and in the end they came a bit. That was fun.

The croatian fans on the other hand (and other end ) were hardcore. Very loud and persistent with lots of choreogaphies (sp?). A friend of mine sat right next to their block and was blown away by their noise. Impressive.

Weeelllll, Spain looked fantastic, nobody cares about Tunisia/KSA and lady luck smiles on the Germans.....

Now that the first ties have been played, who's looked the best? I'd go for Argentina and Spain I think. And the Czech Republic.

Anyway, prediction competition....whose bright idea was this anyway??!

I haven't seen many games (I saw 6) and it seems I missed all the best ones, except Argentina-Ivory Coast which was really good. Didn't see Italy, Spain or the Czech Republic play.

So: should Sven play Rooney today? I'm going with no, give him all the time he can get to recover. We don't (shouldn't?) need him against Trinidad & Tobago - we should start with Owen and the Crouch, and bring on Walcott later.

If you're 3-0 up or something I'd be tempted to give Rooney 10 minutes I think, but I can understand why not. Sven has said he has no injury and is match fit, so if he doesn't play him, he's lying.

I don't want to be nationalistic about it,
but all dutch coaches did great in the first round
Van Basten won with The Netherlands
Advocaat won with South Korea
Hiddink won with Australia
and Beenhaker didn't lose with Trinidad and Tobago

Agreed. He is of the 'volatile secret weapon' kind of catagory still I'd say, and should be used when needed, which is not today. If we haven't scored by 75-80 minutes, though, I'd probably be shouting at the tele for Rooney, and at Sven asking why we've got no-one up front.

Like against Paraguay - Peter Crouch needs someone to run in front of him.

I'd really like to see Theo Walcott play a bit today, if only for Sven to justify bringing him. Surely we should be comfortable enough against Paulo Wanchope et al to give the lad a run out? Surely?

yeah, I suppose
but still
I only wanted to say that the dutch did great 'till now
don't see Beenhakker and T&T stunting against England
but at least Oranje and South Korea should go to the second round

Well seeing as Paulo Wanchope should really be playing for Costa Rica and not Trinidad & Tobago, it appears nothing is certain anymore.

Bum. It's too hot, I'm making mistakes. Replace Wanchope with the Saints' very own Kenwyne Jones.

Well England left it late, but better late than never. The introductions of Rooney and Lennon certainly seemed to do some good.

There were some scary moments though!

Have you seen Peter Crouch grab the hair of defender Brent Sancho and pulling it real hard while jumping to score the first goal? I wonder why Sancho didn't protest at all. And am courious to see what the FIFA makes of that.

Very sneaky. I'd imagine Sancho didn't protest as Beenhakker (sp?) would make him get his hair cut. The protesting wouldn't have done anything anyway. Good play by Crouch really, wouldn't have thought he'd have it in him.

If FIFA make an issue of that, they'll have to check ten things in each game

I'd love to chop Crouch's arms off. Not only is he the least skilful player with the most none-existent technique I've ever seen in my life, but he can't even grasp the most fundamental rule of football: leave the opponents’ shorts ALONE!

No! He has good touch for a big man.

Also, talking of leaving shorts alone, did you see Dwight Yorke after he'd been hit in the jewels? Leave 'em alone mate!
