I hope Mexico's gonna fight to take the first place in their group, seeing as they play against group C in the 1/8ths...

yes, argentina looked amazing. And look at the bench and the players that came off it. Feck sake. They've put down a marker for the rest. |

Argentina were indeed amazing, but I'm not exactly sure why everyone is creaming over their team goal so much. So they made a lot of passes before they scored--does that really make the end result that much better? If anything it's just plain inefficiency! |

Shoot! I was really hoping Mexico could've gotten at least one on Angola. That tie will set them back...

Mmmh... I don't think anyone rates Mexico really high (except themselves...). Their team is much worse this year than in 2002.

surely, ure jesting. inefficiency?? Then, surely u should just hit long balls like England did (that was exciting eh!!) and hope for an efficient goal. But alas your wrong. Keeping the ball expends less energy than trying to get it back so blah... |

The Dutch won again! Again, we played not that great but still lovely goal by Van Persie! And I think we played better than France or England in their games Don't think we can beat Argentina, not that it really matters

they should make an issue of Crouch, just because he's bad! Everything you can hold against him, you should. That volley in the first half was so bad! His goal remind me of how I scored goals when I was 12 years old and couldn't play: it wasn't cheating, but it wasn't fair either. Don't have any sympathy for him.The second goal was amazing though. Great shot!

The US got hosed by the red cards, but I'm proud of how they played. |

Ghana are the new heroes of Africa this morning. Not too sure if they can last though.
The Czech goalkeeper was impressive. Italy should be worried now.

You can sit next to me during the Sweden match, yop. I couldn't even bring myself to call that a volley. He practises every day how to hit a ball, gets paid thousands a week and still ends up knocking shots out for throw-ins. You gotta laugh! |

Agreed, Petr Cech is one of the absolute best keepers in the world. Italy didn't look sufficiently dominant over the USA to be that confident going into the next match.

South Korea have the best fans for sure. Absolutely fantastic.
Argentina were excellent, but have perhaps peaked too soon. We'll see. They certainly won't play that well again (or be allowed to play that well again).
There's a long way to go yet.

Yippie! Still first! (If only por un pelo like my spanish friends would say...)
Let's hope that Klinsi will be able to say that, too, after tomorrows game against Equador.
So... England or Sweden? Who will it be? |

Anyone else getting really pisse off with the referees in this world cup? Breathe within 50 yards of anyone and you're in the book. Someone should remind them that it's a contact sport.

I think they do a really good job. They have a very clear, strict line. Which is a good thing, now that the ko-round matches are approaching. And remember four years ago? That was bad. |

I don't mind if they're too strict. What bothers me is that they don't all apply the same rules (Zidane took a yellow for playing a free kick before the referee told him to, while others just received a warning for the same fault) (note that I don't particularly care for Zidane, he hasn't done much for the team. That was just an example). Same thing for the shirt pulling.

I think they've been spot on with yellow's (possibly, a few times when an off-side was finished off by some-one sticking the ball in the net is a bit harsh, crespo got one and a few others).
But anytime a there is a break (not even last man) and some-one gets fouled to break it up they get a yellow (and damn right).. Defenders gotta learn to tackle correctly and stopping throwing in the boot anytime. |

and the ghana penalty taker got one for taking the kick too quickly.
But then again, if the players are'nt listening to the ref throughout the match, then it's their fault. You can't take a free kick while the ref is giving a yellow card to some-one (it's just stupid and will delay the game further).

Refereeing has been fine except a few decisions, most notably the spain penalty against ukraine and the sending off following it.
I don't know why people make such a big deal of players who, after they've been fouled, simulate a card action so that the referee will book the offending party. Because in a match there are no doubt countless times where players will moan verbally to the referee about how that should be a yellow card, persistent fouling etc. Essentially it is the same thing but i suppose actions speak louder than words.
Why do people feel the need to compare the referees in the premiership, to those in the world cup? If referees globally were like those in the premiership the national identity of a football team would be taken away. People seem to get hung up about the fact that England is the homeland of football and all this cock and bull about football "coming home". It's such a small minded attitude! It says to me, "It's our sport, you're not allowed to play unless it's by our rules".
When the English first spread football around the world, it evolved to different classes of people, and from there it evolved as to the acceptable methods of play, culture and style.
My biggest moan at this world cup though is the biggest moaner of all - Mick McCarthy. All he bloody does is moan! The man gets paid to be there commentating...what i would give to get paid for watching football! Yet he continually sounds disinterested and unimpressed. The commentating in general has been terrible in this country, often getting the player names wrong and the general interest of matches not involving england next to none. And even when there is an interesting game, all we hear is memories of '66 and the half time analysis of the game is replaced by "lets see what england fans are doing" "lets talk about england". I know now that i sound just as bad as Mick! But, come on, for fucks sake!
All in all these small gripes havent spoiled a fantastic world cup so far for me!

Jeez I actually cant believe you guys are defending the way this world cup has been refereed. My point is not about refeering the English way or whatever it's just that football is a contact sport. If players go down holding their ankles and howling in pain everytime a player goes anywhere near them, and are rewarded for it, then they will obviously repeat this kind of behaviour. It seems that referees in this world cup are blowing for the slightest contact, basically anything that results in the attacker losing the ball seems to be worthy of a yellow card for the defender. The more it carries on, the more it seems the game will go down this route of defenders tip-toeing around strikers for fear that they may breathe on them and get sent off. In my eyes, that isn't good for the game. Not only does diving compromise the art of defending, but also slows the game down to a snails pace, with fuckers going down clutching their faces every 5 minutes, and then lying their for another ten minutes while they receive 'treatment', completely breaking up the rhythm of the game. Thats my view anyway.

I thought that, but if people heard the players asking for an opponent to be booked, then they would make just as big a deal.
