I assume FB likes all/most of these artists, otherwise why mention them right? Anyway I have these so far:
MENUDO & RAMONES [I heard ramona sing]
DAVID BOWIE [western star]
HENRY SLOANE? CHUBBY CHECKER, DESMOND DEKKER & FREDDY FENDER [I want rock & roll]
DESMOND DEKKER, again [parry the wind high/low]

Great thread!

"I saw the ghost of Johnny Horton" - If it takes all night
Lou Reed - I've been tired

Thanks to Tre's work on the db, we know that "Everything is new" refers to, and I quote:

"Hiram, John, Billy Jean [entire second verse]
Hiram Williams, better known as Hank Williams, is considered the father of contemporary country music. He met 19-year old Billie Jean Jones in the fall of 1952 and the couple married that October. John, or Johnny Horton, another early country star, met Hank Williams in 1952 when Williams rejoined the Lousiana Hayride, a weekly live radio show broadcasting out of Shreveport, Louisiana. Williams became a sort of mentor for Horton. Hank Williams died on January 1, 1953 in the back of Cadillac on his way to a concert. After his death, Horton became close to Williams' widow, and in September 1953, Billie Jean and Johnny Horton married. On November 4, 1960, Horton was involved in an auto accident and died on his way to the hospital, suffering an almost similar and just as tragic death as Williams.

Skyline
The Skyline Club of Austin, TX, which opened in 1948. Through a strange twist of events, the Skyline became the location for the final concerts of both Hank Williams and Johnny Horton. On January 1, 1953, Williams died in his sleep in the back of a car while being transported between gigs. Horton died when his car was struck by a drunk driver after his gig at the Skyline on November 4, 1960."

I thought Jim McLuckie did that work, Kathryn. Maybe not; don't know. Either way, that's shrewd of you to put that in this thread.

Johnny Horton is also mentioned in "If It Takes All Night," and is in the title of the instrumental "The Ballad Of Johnny Horton."

"Czar" is about John Denver.

Dick Dale is "the king of the surf guitar" mentioned in "The Man Who Was Too Loud," and I believe that song overall is supposed to be about Jonathan Richman.

Fu Manchu is supposedly a fictional account of Lennon meeting Bowie in London in the 1960s, an telling him he should grow a Fu Manchu-style moustache!

And Ray Bradbury (Cult Of Ray) kind of 'performs' in that he sometimes does lectures at libraries, etc.

Also Shemp (i.e., "Brother Sam").

"85 Weeks" is apparently about Captain Beefheart, and mentions Eric Drew Feldman (who played for both Frank and Don).

Wow, cool, didn't know that. "As to his fame he has two claims he is a Don as well a Captain", it all makes sense now. Franks songs just keep giving and giving.

For a possible third Desmond Dekker reference, it's my theory that the "I felt like an Israelite" line in "Sing For Joy" is a reference to Desmond Dekker's biggest hit, "The Israelites". That's the only way I can figure that the Israelite line makes sense (and if you read the lyrics to the DD song, I think it does make sense). But I've been wrong before when it comes to Frank's lyrics...

Elvis is also referenced in a line from "I Want Rock n Roll" as are the Rolling Stones. ("start me up, return to sender")

Mose Allison is an obvious one not yet mentioned.

If we're going for ALL performers, "At the End of the World" is about John Candy, and "I Gotta Move" is about Jack Nance and Peter Ivers of Eraserhead fame.

I just saw it as a reference to the Israelites wandering in the wilderness after leaving Egypt. I believe that was actually for a period of forty years, but seven was an important number in the Bible. That doesn't necessarily mean it ISN'T a Dekker reference, but it made perfect sense to me without my having heard the Dekker song.

And yes, John Candy was in "Camp Candy," but that was hardly the pinnacle of his career.

Did I miss it or did nobody mention Jonathan Richman from "The Man Who Was Too Loud" (a song which as I've heard from someone who knows Richman, that he's not the keenest on.... but whatever! I love it and his music as well).

Alienation confers freedom. Obscurity will keep you pure. Pray that you won’t be discovered young, so that you won’t be tempted to sell out early, or won’t be seduced by celebrity.
