I know we haven't even had Halloween yet, and the Canadians celebrated their Thanksgiving a couple weeks back (whats that all about? ), but was wondering what other Amerikuhns were doing to honor the holiday? For me, I don't give a crap about holidays, but I love the food and atmoshphere. Especially Thanksgiving. Easter, Christmas, and Halloween are nuthin' to me. But I've always had great Thanksgivings. The reason I bring up the topic is because I just discovered over the weekend I will be spending this Thanksgiving in Jamaica! How great is that??!! Some friends and myself have found a little resort 2 hours outside of Mantego Bay out in the jungles and right on the beach. I'm sure the rain will be consistent, but the weather is slated for 80 degrees. I'm so excited, mon. Anyhow, what are others doing?

cool. the more fun times the better. in britain we don't do this but to read that christmas is nothing... thanks giving must be good. christmas is a great time.

Thanksgiving has retained a little more of its spirit or pureness than Christmas. Don't get me wrong, I love Christmas (but lets not open that debate again).
I'll be heading to my in-laws in Berkeley for Thanksgiving. It'll be a big crowd (~20) and they do a nice dinner and they're good people (liberal ministers in this age of intolerance). |

Actually we celebrate Thanksgiving over here because we got rid of so many religious freaks when the American colonies were set up.

Don't they have Harvest Festival in some parts of Europe? That's essentially the same thing, although the excuse for the American version is to celebrate a group of people who broke away from a repressive church, and moved to the New World to start an even more repressive church.
Anyway, I'll probably be spending Thanksgiving at my girlfriend's house, and eat turkey and such.

Well, I will be spending this Thanksgiving with my sister, brother, and two nieces. I'm sure we will all get drunk and wind up fighting.

We're holding a (very) late Thanksgiving party on Dec. 1 for a bunch of our international friends. We like to share our strange American holiday and try to explain why we eat turkey to celebrate. Last year, we had a bunch of Germans, and they drank us under the table. This year, the group includes two Brits (one Muslim), all the same Germans from last year, a Finn, an Israeli/Columbian dude, a Canadian (me), several Americans (my wife and kids), and who knows who else. You all are welcome to join. I'm really hoping someone can come show the French flag this year ...

I really look forward to Thanksgiving because all of my great friends go to college far away. They all come home for a week or more for the holiday and I get to hang out with them for a good week.

Actually, I'm thinking of changing my Thanksgiving plans. I'm gonna pack a lunch and go hiking in the mountains by myself. Fuck the family thing. I haven't done the family Thanksgiving thing for 3 years now, so why fix what ain't broken?

| As corny as this sounds, on or around Thanksgiving I try to take at least 15 minutes and think of all things I have to be thankful for- my parents and brothers are healthy, I have friends who would do anything for me, ect. |

| I'm going to my parents place (about an hour north of here, SF) in a few days (not entirely sure when yet). On Thanksgiving we usually have about 10-17 people at my place, mainly family on my mom's side. Looking forward to good food and seeing some of my family who I don't normally get to see. I'm also going to cram in a few hours at my old work so I can become slightly less broke. |

Okay...kind of late, but did everyone have a good Thanksgiving? I wound up doing the family thing after all which was fun. I made some delightful spiced/spiked apple cider which was totally potent. I had never made it before and just made it up. In a big pot I mixed 2 gallons of cider, a sliced-up orange, 8 cinnamon sticks, some allspice, nutmeg, and a grannysmith apple studded with cloves. I simmered it for a long time. Then I filled mugs up halfway with Captain Morgans, and poured the cider over it. I was afraid if I cooked the rum with the cider, it would cook off the alcohol. Oh it was dandy!!! What did others do? Kathryn, were your devilled eggs part of your feast?

I made a new appetizer that was delish. I took phyllo dough and stuffed it with a mixture of sun-dried tomatoes, feta, parmesian and pecorino-romano cheeses along with some marjoram, thyme and black pepper. I brushed it all with olive oil, and then baked them. They went over pretty well.

| I went to California to visit a friend. I smoked a lot of grass and drank a lot of wine. We made Cornish game hens, as a Turkey seemed too complicated and time-consuming. We also played a bunch of music and went for some good walks. Oh yeah, we also went to see 'Casino Royale', did it ever suck! Anyway a great Thanksgiving! |
