In regards to the next Nashville disc, or whatever it turns out to be, man I can't wait. Every time I hear a new Frank Black album is coming out it I have to shake my head and ask myself how someone can put out so much great music with such consistant frequency. I mean, he's been going strong for neigh on two decades now releasing [among us anyway] classics almost every time out.
As far as the suggested song line up, part of me is praying for the lean and mean, take no prisoners type of disc he's hinted at with about 12 songs that will totally knock out anyone unfamiliar with Frank's solo music. The primary reason for that is I would love to see him capitalize on this Pixies resurgence and his new position in the spotlight. An unlikely hit or a countryrock crossover hit or anything, would work wonders for everyone. The Pixies reunion was born out of, primarily a need for cash, as all parties involved have already admited, and there's nothing wrong with that at all. I'm not a big fan of mainstream music (and no one could accuse Pixies or Black of being mainstream, even if their sound is still being pirated and painfully watered down even to this day in popular rock), as I imagine most of the members of this forum are, but we do represent a massive, under the radar group with a taste for style and originality. If done correctly, a new Pixies album would be a dream come true of course, but given how unlikely that seems, I have to figure a mildly sucessful album by a solo Frank would 1)encourage a new fan base, 2)encourage a new creative flurry from The Man - not to say he NEEDS one, not at all. I've loved damn near every album he's ever produced, though cult of ray still bugs me (not without it's highlights though). But it's hard to argue that his full out, no holds barred peak came with Teenager, when he was in the spotlight more than any other point in his career until now.
That being said, the other part of me wishes of course for the 25 song, two disc epic extravaganza he's hinted at. And why not? Who among us wouldn't kill for a true Frank Black double album, just laying it all out, no apologies?! Given the potential of this new backing band of no-shit superstars (their credentials speak for themselves), there's a lot of potential in that prospect. Leave all the sore spots in there too, that's part of the appeal of The White Album - warts and all, it's the only double album by an amazing group. Same deal with this one as far as I'm concerned. Even Frank's extra rough stuff appeals to me on some odd level, probably for the same reason I like a lot of obscure mid-late 70s Jethro Tull...whoops! Didn't want to go there. Probably lost some credit with that one...
Anywho, like the cowboy in the big lebowski, I kinda lost my train of thought here. Point is, I'm confused why more people don't dig on Frank, or Pixies for that matter. I know and meet a lot of people in my daily life, and I have to say almost no one is familiar with FB solo. Occasionally I run into someone who knows of, or even has a Pixies album or two, but when I play it for friends or random people, they might ask who it is without much interest, but often they are completely indifferent, or just confused, which is honestly the same reaction I used to have on hearing a new FB album until it grew on me. I suppose good music will always be lost on the masses.
BTW hWolsky, as far as the comment about having a moral right to complain, what does that mean? This is an open forum about a singular topic, no?
Sorry about the novel here..
blah blah, miller |

I like the new members. johnnyribcage, scottP, Nemesis (not tehnically a newbie) and all, kudos for talking cleverly about Frank. It hadn't happened in the last 2 years I think.

Johnny, moral right? What does that mean?
It merely means that we should self critise our lifes in front of screens instead of complaining about an artist that gave us nothing but pleasure.
Goodbye everyone. I have an actual life to live now. Theorising is good only if sung.

Isn't the right to complain part of that whole free speech thing? I know they don't have that in some countries, but it's my opinion that they SHOULD.

i guess it depends on who's complaining and what they're complaining about. for instance, i don't think girls should complain about leaving the toilet seat up |

i personally think that the problem is frank's recording ethic. while i generally love the stuff he does, i think he is limiting himself with the straight to 2 track ethos with the catholics. sure, many songs can be recorded that way, but it shouldn't be an "all or nothing" stance.
imho
kevin
The more I read from this site, the more I believe I'm one of a few who are happy the Catholics are no more. I loved their work, and as a band, they were one of the best I've ever seen play live. But their direction was getting a little predictable, too comfortable and contented for me. Frank knew what he was doing when he called a halt to it. They'd run their course.

They have the RIGHT to, but you also have the right not to listen.
Honestly, I find this complaint somewhat valid, since I don't see why anyone would want to leave the lid up. Among other things, it increases the probability that something will fall into the bowl. On the other hand, if someone forgets, it's a matter of two seconds to correct it.

Put it down, I guess. I usually don't pay that much attention, but I'm pretty much wired not to want to leave the toilet bowl exposed any more than is necessary.

I've personally separated from my wife recently, and it was tough... then I met someone else, who is absolutely wonderful. And while all this happened, I was listening to Honeycomb and I must say I feel like all the songs are talking to me personally. |

You need to get a little older, a little wiser, a little more heartbroken to appreciate it. It's a very mature album,--JT

For me, Honeycomb musically is definitely not my choice in direction. That said, there are times when nice mellow stuff is what's called for in one's day or life, and then Honeycomb shines. So it's not that the record is bad, in my opinion, just that it's not my preference of listening style generally. I begrude the man not at all for recording it, no more than I did FrankBlackFrancis. If we poopoo the man trying things when they turn out in a way we don't like, then we're really asking him to stop experimenting, and that's in my mind the last thing I want. I didn't like the result as much as other experiments FB has tried (his most memorable to me being a white-album type genre-defying 22 song epic) but I hope he'll keep trying different things.
As for quality of the songs, if I start to think they've gone down, I can think back to songs throughout his career that haven't tickled me as much as others. I do especially like songs with double meanings, hidden things, inventive structure and all those other hallmarks that set FB apart from the rest, but I think that even in Honeycomb you can see things like this in songs like Selkie Bride, as one example. The straightforwardness can be okay if its heartfelt (which I think we can all agree that Honeycomb is) but I prefer inventiveness. And a little more rockiness, most of the time.
Finally, I remember when talking about SMYT before its release FB used to talk about recording with a symphony. I still am REALLY excited about this experiment (and also very interested to see how the next round in Nashville goes) and I hope that the idea hasn't been dropped. TOTY and parts of SMYT have definitely sold me on FB's instrumentational abilities.
Oh, and as I've said elsewhere, sniping members of the forum, even indirectly, will result in your account being locked. This is the second thread in particular that your name has come to my attention, mr. ghost. This is a warning to you in particular and others in general because I'd rather not lock accounts if I don't have to.

I generally agree with what you wrote, Dean, except for this bit:
quote:
If we poopoo the man trying things when they turn out in a way we don't like, then we're really asking him to stop experimenting, and that's in my mind the last thing I want.
I don't think anybody wants Frank to stop experimenting. Hey, everyone here has followed him in every direction he's taken for the last 19 years or so. But I think many regard HC as a step back, as if Frank actually had stopped experimenting. Anyway that's what you say when you talk about "inventiveness". I think they're related (experimentation and inventiveness). Or maybe they're not but people tend to mix both things.
Crap I can't speak english, why do I keep trying? Forget what you've just read.
