I need to buy some new strings for my bass guitar - does anyone have a preference for a particular type (ie, nickel/bronze/steel/round wound/flatwound etc...) and why?
I've never bought bass strings before and I'm not sure exactly what to get

If you're playing in a rough manner, I would spend a few extra bucks for some nicer ones.
-Blue steel strings sounded nice, but broke a lot.
-Flatwound feels weird and unnatural. I place then on my fretless, regretting it.
-Every now and then, you'll see strings sell 2-for-1. Those are worth it.
-IMO, if you're going to be playing bass all by yourself, get some cheaper strings. |

My cool tip: take off old manky strings and boil them in a pan of water for half an hour. Gets all the crud off them and makes them a bit "newer".
Don't try on guitar strings, they're far too thin and weedy.
I use Warwick strings, I think? The heavier of the 2 sets they have in my local shop, I kept breakin' the lower gauge- thick E and all!

True. I've also boiled my old strings and they actually sounded brand new.
I remember reading that one of the bassists for frank black put on stings YEARS ago and haven't replaced them. He loves the rusty sound old strings give.

Speaking on the behalf of flatwound...
Once you rip all the skin off your fingertips playing on regular strings (it's fun, and I ain't knockin' it), switch to a fretless with flatwound. I think it's fantastic. But, if you're playing a fretted, then... don't.
That's just my preference. Plus, I think they sound better on a fretless. Oh, well. It's really just trial and error on what your prefer, as I think we all know. |

leia, didn't you find yourself licking your fingers for a faster slide up the neck with flatwound?
Maybe I needed to grease up my fingers when I owned a fretless flatwound.

DR high beams .45-.105 best souding most cosistent string on the mkt. if you can't get those
gool old rotosounds .. in the orange pack are you next best bet.. rock on all
