Are you asking the David Lynch movie?
Awful compared to the book but not his fault really. He had a unique vision for it and his cut was 12 hours long. The studio cut it to 3. If it would have been release complete it would have been way ahead of his time, an epic like Lord of the Rings in size and scope. |

I've never seen the movie in sequence - only ever watched pieces of it. Don't ask me how it's happened this way, but it simply has and now it's one of those movies I'll probably never see which is why I'm intrigued by the book.

I read the entire series when I was a teenager.
Can't remember much about it, really. I think I completed the series with Chapterhouse. Am I right?
I do remember wishing I could have been Paul "Muad'Ib" (sp?) Atredies, though. (Well, until the unfortunate happenings in Dune Messiah and Children of Dune)

The movie is pretty weak compared to the books. Lynch did a decent job, though.
Alejandro Jordorowsky (El Topo, the Holy Mountain) wanted to make it into a feature film. Supposedly got Pink Floyd to do the soundtrack, but it never came about.
Now, that would have been worthwhile.

I havn't gotten round to reading Dune, read some of the other books since I loved the movie and read loads about Herberts Universe, (they never have Dune in the library, only the other books which is pretty annoying). I really love the movie, I've got three versions of it, the original theatre release, the t.v version with the extra footage and the newly remastered version of it. I'd love to see the t.v. mini series. I only read recently that Lynch added in some of his own stuff into the movie like the Barons diseased skin and the Mentat mantra when Piter De Vries is drinking the Sapho juice.

Yes. The longer version was a TV edit and is quite poor, with an uneccessary narrative which really bogs things down. The music cues are all switched around and awry, and the actual editing is confusing. David Lynch (ha! First time I typed 'David Lunch'!) had his name struck from the credits and replaced it with the famous 'Alan Smithee'.
The theatrical cut, while of course paired down from the novel, was quite awesome in scope and atmosphere, with some beautifully weird visuals, a great score, perfect casting, and a close-to-the-source thematic quality. It's not the book page for page...there are some major deletions and a couple additions, but what's up there on the screen is pretty damn close.
The SciFi Channel's 2000 remake was an atrocity I think. It looked cheap, and was incredibly boring...I think Lynch's version while awash in a checkered history, is quite the companion to Herbert's masterpiece.

The t.v. version of the movie version is pretty terrible but worth watching for the extra footage like Gurney Halleck playing his Baliset (guitar type instrument) and how the Freeman preists extract the Water of Life from baby sandworms. The illustrations at the start are terrible and the voice over sounds like the guy who voiced over The Dukes of Hazzard, plus they repeat battle scenes over and over again and reflect them to make them seem longer.

I reads the whole series too, I think my biggest problem with the film was that they pronounced everything wrong...
was God emporer of dune the one where his boy was the giant worm god with the robot duncans? (It's been a long time) |

Didn't he die while writing God Emporer?
I think his son finished it off using notes Frank had written.
...or am I thinking of the one that followed GEOD?

"Frank Herbert left a detailed and expansive outline for "Dune 7," which wraps up many storylines introduced in the original six Dune Chronicles, plus the story will finish numerous loose ends from the six prequels written by Brian and Kevin. In breaking down the outline to begin writing, Brian and Kevin realized the novel would be close to 1500 pages long; therefore, they are dividing the story into two volumes, to be titled HUNTERS OF DUNE and SANDWORMS OF DUNE (titles suggested by Frank Herbert).

His son, Brian Herbert and author Kevin Anderson have written a slew of Dune books since about '99. My brother reas them and tells me they're awful.

The film could have been better for dune, I remember reading about the alternate one which did sound more impressive (someone posted about it on here.. was it MCA??) but I think considering how very epic the book is the film is pretty good.
Apart from pronouncing everything wrong,
and his truly disturbing sister
I don't think I would want to read the prequels, I've always thought they looked a bit like money spinning pointless efforts and dune was my favourite book for so long I wouldn't want it ruined by shoddy prequel action. When I first started highschool I got dune out of the library and never took it back, my copy has fallen to pieces now which is unfortunate because this thread makes me want to start them again for the umpteenth time. |
