pick your conflicts wisely. If you find the argument is going in circles then you've wasted enough good energy on it, leave them to their madness.

owen you are right.
No need to argue infinitely with the delusional.

Its just some guilt that I have for "leaving them to their madness".

We tried! We told him like a hundred times that Frank was born in Boston. Frank even said it himself in an interview yesterday! And still he won't accept it. I say leave Floop alone, Carolyn. His case is desperate.

Was this thread some kind of set up to illicit that kind of male vs female response?

heh, id love to be able to reaason with the irrational, then id be able to reason with myself, sometimes there just isnt anything you can say, your best arguement however well put may be wasted, i think if they really are being irrational the only way they are going to get over it is by figuring it out themselves...the problem is that right now what is rational to you isnt rational to them (obvious i know, but i worked this out the hard way!)

If you're arguing with the person and they constantly argue in circles, twist your words, use fallacies of logic, throw accusatory questions at you with false implications, end the argument on an abrupt note without any resolution to speak of or don't seem to be empathising with you at all, I suggest to you they're not really interested in winning the argument but the point is just to suck your energy through the emotion you expend on it, and if you ever leave the encounter feeling drained (through anger/frustration/guilt) and they seem charged by it, that's a big indicator too. (I'll add that sometimes people do it without knowing it and they can even do it by passive means like just being in the room with you - I met this girl who was holidaying here last year, we'd exchanged emails and I was looking forward to her visiting again but when she came to stay all I wanted to do was nap - we'd be walking around town and I'd be making excuses to run an errand, I'd dart back to the house to grab an hours's sleep. She left and I spent three or four days in the house alone to get over the drained feeling. She was an extremely pleasant person and we shared a lot of interests, just any instant I came into contact with her I felt sapped and could not stay awake in her presence)

Perhaps that which strikes you as "unreasonable" is just very, very abstract.

Also, consider finding a common viewpoint. I, like anyone else, find Nazism to be sick and capable of causing inhumane damage to the world, but I do see the logic behind the quote "when I hear anyone talk of culture, I reach for my revolver"; you can spend years culturing yourself, but it won't keep you alive if you're being physically supressed.

Haha, I'm divorced now, so listen with caution!!
Seriously, though, you can't expect them to change too much if at all, so if YOU can't deal with it then that's a problem. There was/is a reason you guys love each other, so remember it. Finally, when they do or say something that totally pisses you off, then ask yourself "what else (besides doing that to piss me off) could that possibly mean?" Maybe there is something you hadn't thought of that would put their actions in a different light. Oh, one more thing I didn't do enough of: get babysitters frequently.

When I was working with this irrational guy who just wanted to win every argument the only way to win a fight was trying to convince him that he actually was the author of my idea.
