I'm not sure I'd make a forum like this about any other musician given how stalkerish it would seem. But Every time Frank comes to town (here in Ottawa) he ends up hanging out in some very public place, and I've had the good fortune of running into him a few times (something you just can't do with other famouns people). The first and coolest time was just across from the venue he was going to play at with the Catholics (for their first album). The venue was Barrymore's, and I was having a beer at the Royal Oak across the street. This place is your average pub (beer and wings), and in he walks with the opening act (whose name I totally forget now). He sits down for a beer, and while he's waiting for it I just go say hi and ask him to sign a cd (I was damn nervous). I've always known him to be a pretty private person, so I made it all of 45 seconds, and went and sat back at my table. He was very friendly and said he looked forward to the show. Back at my table I came up with the idea of buying his drinks. I called the waitress and asked if she could put "that gentlemen's drink on my tab". About 20 minutes later she came over and said she had done as I said. Then she held out her hand, opened it, and in it sat a guitar pic. She said "he wanted you to have this". I think I melted in my chair. I must have looked like a stupid kid. I think that says so much about Frank. Kind, mysterious, and just awesome :)
any other good stories ? |

Welcome, Cellar Door. I've heard it said that your forum name is the most beautiful phrase in the English language.
I was all out of luck, like a duck that died. I was all out of juice, like a moose denied. |

In "Donnie Darko," the observation about "cellar door" being the most beautiful phrase is simply attributed to "a famous linguist." There's some disagreement as to who this is, but Tolkien seems to be one of the most likely candidates.

Well, there was a play written by playwright Israel Horovitz titled "It's Called the Sugar Plum" where a character muses at a funeral (paraphrased, mind you...I was in the play back in 1990) "you know what the two most beautiful words in the whole English language are? Cellar door."
I've seen DONNIE DARKO but do not recall this being uttered. But anyhow, I believe the root comes from Horovitz's play. Strange that I recalled this! Thanks for the memory.
