Well this album has really been growing on me lately. It just goes to show that, whether you think so or not, a few extra listens can make all the difference. I get to see them in three days and can't wait! Does anybody know if Neko will be there? I think I read something about her not being at all the shows on this tour.

Neko was at the Philadelphia show last night, and was the easily the most talkative band member. A good thing, too, since my girlfriend and I were both Neko fans before we were New Pornographers fans. Dan Bejar only showed up on stage on the songs where did the lead vocal, though. I've heard he used to not tour with the band at all, so I guess this is an improvement over that. No idea about the lineup at future shows, but I don't know of any reason why they would change it.

I have a somewhat lengthy review of the show up at my livejournal, if anyone's interested.

I read the review, thanks! Do you know how much shirts cost and do you have a setlist or know where I can find any from this tour?

At that show, shirts were $15 each, which isn't bad at all. On the other hand, I don't think any of them have anything on the back. I don't know where to find setlists.

nice review vovat! i'll be seeing them on friday. hope neko chats it up as well. i agree with you that a fair amount of banter during the show can add lot. and i haven't really read their lyrics either. i was a bit disappointed they're not in the twin cinema disk. i'll have to find them on the net.

Great show! The mix was terrible (couldn't hear the vocals AT ALL throughout the whole show), but it was still great. They played two encores, which was cool. I was able to stand literally right in front of the stage, leaning against the stage directly in front of Kathryn (who I'm now in love with, more so than Neko). Destroyer absolutely sucked and Dan seemed like a bit of an asshole the way he just came out when they did his songs (and completely drunk, I might add). I was hoping to get the setlist, as it was right in front of me, but I'm kind of mad at myself that I didn't. They played a great mix of songs from all three albums and it was a really fun show.

kathryn was wearing this insanely weird outfit for the NP's set (she was in a tshirt and jeans and looking gorgeous during her band's set). it was like a pale green mumu mixed with something a vampire would wear. it was pretty nuts.

did she and kurt do their tambourine toss? i love that shit

i don't mind destroyer. but bejar (i always thought it was pronounced be-JAR but apparently its be-HAR) was TRASHED. his drunkeness almost ruined my fav. NP song, "Testament to Youth in Verse"

Speaking of pronounciation, how do you pronounce Neko? I always thought it was Neko as in meek, but when some people in the audiance were shouting her name, one of the band members spoke up and said it was pronounced Neko as in neck. I don't know if he was joking or if that's really how you pronounce it. And yeah, Dan was trashed and had a new beer in his hand every time he came out, but he did make it through the songs okay. One of the main things that bugged me about Destroyer, other than the fact that I didn't care for the music, was their complete lack of organization. Literally after each song there was a whole minute or more of silence as the band members discussed with each other what song they were going to play next. That and, just like the pornos, you couldn't hear the vocals at all.

its neck-o

and yeah, i didn't like the discussion between songs for destroyer either. i like the idea of no setlist, but then somebody (ie. bejar) should be "boss" and call it off, or draw up a list of songs that everyone is ok with and mess with the sequence on stage. this discussion thing is really frustrating. i have a beach boys bootleg from 72 and you KNOW they had a setlist, and they still take 1-2 minutes between songs, just shooting the shit. i don't mind some participation w/ the audience, but c'mon, i paid to hear music, not your side convos.

I've never heard it pronounced any way other than with the long E (as in "meek). Carolyn Mark definitely pronounces it that way, and she should know. I'd be interested in knowing what Brian's source on the alternate pronunciation is.

Besides, Necco is the company that makes those disgusting candy hearts, so it's not a name I'd wish on anyone. :P

Incidentally, back when I knew Neko's name but not what she looked like, I thought she was Japanese.

OMIGOD, OMIGOD, OMIGOD!!!!!!

I am going to see them in a tiny venue, 5 minutes walk from my new flat in Manchester. Not even been officially announced yet but I have 4 tickets. I think Bumblebeeboy2 is coming with me too.

YAY!

I am so happy, I haven't been this excited since I got my Pixies tickets for the first night at Brixton last year.

I knew my patience would pay off if I ignored the two London dates.

I wouldn't put too much trust in DJ's as far as pronunciation matters go. I mean, I remember hearing one college radio DJ say they'd just played a song by "Eddie Brickle." I think there's enough other evidence to prove that her name is pronounced with a long E. I'm assuming what Adrian mentioned was a joke; now that I think about it, Carl clearly used the long E pronunciation at the concert I went to.

One thing I was wondering about the New Pornographers was whether every song they'd ever recorded and released was on one of their three albums. I mean, they're a fairly new band, but you'd still expect them to have some EP's, or a song for a charity compilation, or an iTunes exclusive, or SOMETHING not on an album. Is there something I'm missing?

The last two shows (Madison and Minneapolis) have been cancelled due to their bass player's appendicitis. If anyone knows fumanbru's phone #, let him know as he is driving from Canada to go to the Minny show. Today sucks.

FUCK!! the mrs and i drove down from winnipeg last night and are in minni right now. just found out that the np's canceled the show tonight as well as last night in madison. oh well. i guess i'll get hammered right now.

this is what was posted on the np site:

I got this from the Barrymore Theatre, where they were scheduled to play tonight:

I am very sorry to report but after last nights show in Chicago for the New Pornographers, John Collins, the bass player, suffered from an appendix attack. He ended up having to have it taken out and the band will be canceling their last two shows in Madison tonight and Minneapolis tomorrow.

The band has been racking their brain to figure out a way that they can play without him but they have exhausted all possibilities.

This is a postponement. The date will be replayed as soon as possible. Ticket holders should hold on to their tickets. Tickets are not being refunded until a rescheduled date has been announced, which should be either today or tomorrow. Please check in at our website for more information over the next few days, and we apologize for any inconvenience.

hope john gets better.

I'm sorry to hear that (both about John's appendix attack and your having to miss the show). That's one reason why I'd be reluctant to ever travel a long distance for a concert.
