Alec Eiffel indeed.
I can understand (in a really small way) why some prefer the first two records compared to the last two, but songs like Letter to Memphis, Havalina and Trompe Le Monde I believe are some of the best songs Frank's ever written. The chord progressions, the sounds, in a nut shell...awesome!
I don't know what the recording situation was like during Bossa and Trompe, but maybe the cracks in their relationships (Charles/Kim mainly) were starting to affect the band. Maybe Frank looks back on this period and instead of hearing the great songs written like we do, he remembers the emotional times, stresses and strains.
You are still apart of something profound. We just see the Pixies in a different light to the ones who matter. the Pixies themselves.
We could tell them they're demi gods and the best fuckin' band ever. Frank will turn around and say we're just a rock band. And you know what? We're both right. |

i am nodding.
thank you for opening my eyes a little wider with your insight. i had no idea sharing my point of view would be so rewarding. after that documentary, i certainly didn't expect anyone to agree with me. your words are exactly right. thank you for restoring, no renewing would be a better word...thank you for renewing my faith in others! (and for teaching me a thing or two.)
i'm glad i found a place to share in my appreciation of what i believe to be the greatest band period.

Frank is always the first one to play down the importance, impact, beauty and a series of other grand sounding adjectives of his own music. Humbleness is a great quality, and something that is often lacking in rock stars. Don't tell me you're great, show me.
and you are ill prepared to fight living in a world of soft and white in air conditioned battle zones I pity you!

Documentaries are not real world facts... it depends on who makes them and hence are opinion pieces... this is one documentary maker’s interpretation... some people hate the pixies...nothing there to get so bitter about... |

i straight busted out laughing!
'BONO?! what the hell is he doing on here?'
i am also not a U2 fan. and i'm not sure why this is, but every time i see him talking or hear him being talked about, i start giggling. i don't know, he just strikes me as funny.
i'm guessing i'd enjoy your album collection.

I agree.
I also agree that Boassanova and Trompe deserve more credit though.

I never even knew that Boss and Trompe were apparently held in a lesser regard than the others until visiting this forum! |

I disagree. It's a documentary. It states the facts as objectively as possible. And I don't know if you noticed, but every single article or "best albums ever"-list out there mentions Surfer/Doolittle as their highlights, while giving less kudos to Bossa/Trompe, so this documentary isn't exactly way off.
Besides, the documentary makers weren't able to get the rights to show Bossa/Trompe-era concerts fragments. That may have been another reason why the the documentary chose to largely bypass these two albums altogether. I mean, they couldn't praise it to death and not show a single song off it, could they?
As for Bono: whether you like him or not, it's nice to have someone that famous praising the Pixies on tape. I think it's one of the most valuable additions to the documentary, and it may actually convert some people. Not so for the interviews with the likes of PJ Harvey, Blur, Six by Seven: anybody who's interested in them, was already interested in the Pixies anyway. |

...As for FB dismissing those later Pixies albums himself: apart from the possible reasons given by fbc, it happens quite often that the artist is its own worst judge. You know, all those stories of classic songs which were, according to the artist, "maybe just good enough for a B-side". |

here's a nice quote for you kono from 'the man':
"Well, i thought that "Bossanova" was probably the best record.I don't really listen to them, though. Once you make 'em, man, you've heard them from every possible angle.I've heard them more than the most ardent fan will ever hear them.I don't have a lot of nostalgia for them, not just yet. If someone wants to hear me wax nostalgic about my records, talk to me in ten years"

Actually, I personally think Bossanova and Trompe are slightly "lesser" Pixies albums. I think Doolittle is definitely their magnum opus. Its close to a perfect pop album. I know, "pop"? Well, I mean pop in the same sense as the first Ramones record is a perfect pop album. Theres a cohesiveness to the album that somehow makes it even more than the sum of it's parts. I don't get that from the others. Don't get me wrong, I agree that some of the songs on the latter platters are standout Pixies tracks, but as a unit the records don't grab me the same way. I think as fans of the Pixies, we can listen to those latter works and say "yeah, that's great stuff." But for anyone who isn't a fan, I don't think Bossanova or Trompe would have the same impact as Doolittle. That's not to say that in order to be great a record has to appeal to "the masses." But I think one indicator of how great a record is is that it can appeal to both the fan and the masses. |

Yeah, even though Bossanova is my favorite, I'd probably have to agree that Doolittle is the most cohesive unit.

I was still sort of a fan of U2 and then I saw Bono on the cover of Time magazine with a huge caption that read,"Can Bono Save the World?" That was going a little too far, I hate when these rock stars get diefied like that. |

Quiet you blasphemers, these are obviously the rhymes of a prophet:
I and I in the sky You make me feel like I can fly So high Elevation
Trompe Le Monde is my favourite, just the bassline on Space and the scream in Sad Punk gets it that.
