quote: Eventually we discussed his plans to record some more songs while he was here. He said he was going to use most of the same musicians he used last time [for the Sicilian/Nashville 2 album] including Billy Block, Buddy Miller, Steve Cropper, and Spooner Oldham. [I have since found out that he is recording in Cowboy Jack Clement’s "The Cowboy Arms Hotel and Recording Spa" here in Guitar Town, the same studio he recorded the Sicilian/Nashville 2 album].
Wishful thinking on my part to believe FB's recording songs that won't be on The Sicilian but AFTER, hey Rich? (sorry. you know how one speculates and jumps to all conclusions from great heights)

OldMan you just ROCK!!!
What a good read this was.
Of course there's no way you get away with writing only three paragraphs over a 30min conversation with the guy you call Charles... Just keep on feeding us with more updates and civil order shall be maintained.

Hey thanks everyone. It really makes my heart smile to bring some Frank happiness to all my brothers and sisters here at fb.net.
But hey, I'm not finished yet. Check this out:
11:15-Noon #15: BUILDING YOUR INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS - ROOM 208 Yesterday you heard about touring outside the U.S. from the artist's point of view. Now learn from the men who have the power and contacts to make your international strategy pay off for a lifetime. Most acts would gladly trade Aberdeen for Amsterdam. Learn how it's done and what your passport could really be worth.
Moderator: Bob Saporiti, President, Villa Villa Music, Nashville
Participants: Bob Harris, radio presenter, BBC Radio 2, London Will McCarthy, founder/President, Will McCarthy Music Promotions, London Malcolm Mills, Chairman, Proper Music Group Ltd., London Garry West, co-founder and Business Affairs, Compass Records
This presentation was really informative. Bob Harris was great! He spoke about the warm receptions that await American Roots musicians in Great Britain. The BBC will feature and play your songs, the national print media will write reviews and stories about you, and many others in the business offer much publicity and assistance to those musicians that make the commitment to tour there. While the cost of living is extremely high, and you are guaranteed to lose money on the first tour, if you continue to tour, 1-2 times per year, 3-4 times in two years, then you will eventually develop a nice following of loyal, appreciative listeners, and eventually an American Roots artist can be very successful in England and also in Europe using the same recipe. Emmy Lou Harris was one example given of an American Roots artist that has found success in England using this recipe.
Mr. Harris also shared a story of why the “big hat” country artists are not popular across the pond. A few years ago, Bob was set-up at the Grand Ole Opry here in Guitar Town and broadcasting his radio show. Alan Jackson had just finished performing a set on the Opry when Bob asked him if he would come over and say a few words to Bob’s audience in England. Alan Jackson looked at Bob for a moment, didn’t respond to his request, and intentionally walked away. Bob said it was that lack of respect shown by the “bigger, hat wearing” country artists toward the UK, presumably because the sales market is “not big enough” to justify the time spent, and the feeling had become mutual, that is, the music fans in England have no respect for the “big hat” country artists, nor do they support them.

Great post again, Oldman. We could have a nice discuassion why your "big hats" don't really hit the mark over here, but that's too off topic I think.

fbc, why not create a thread where it's on topic? I don't know if I would have a lot to contribute, but it's an interesting topic. Maybe save that up for a slower time on the forum...

Hey guys, I'm somewhat embarassed to say this, but, I didn't know who Bob Harris was. I do now of course, quiite an influential person in the Music Business. And he was a good ambassador for the "intelligent and loyal" (Mr. Harris' description of the typical music fan in Great Britain) music community across the pond.
Do you ever listen to his programs?

I haven't. Though i've heard of him from Radio 2. He plays country and his own personal taste in new music.
I definately must check his show out. Broaden my horizon and all that. |

That's really cool OMINACC.
I think to a certain extent some Brits have always shown intrest and appriciation for "roots music." I think of Zepplin, Eric Clapton, the Beatles have had an appricaition for blues music.
In a way that has helped us to preserve that over here.
But anyway, thanks OMINACC that's a really cool topic and very interesting info.

Great posts Old Man (from another old man). As for Bob Harris, he has gone down in my estimation recently. Despite numerous requests he failed to play one track from Honeycomb, a heinous crime, I'm sure you will agree. He has played tracks from Devil's Workshop and SMYT in the past though, so I suppose I should forgive him.

(except for the "king holds court" and "jack errol thompson" thread of course.)
also did you bump into mr. tiven at all on the weekend?

OMIACC, Your posts have really made me happy, too. We didn't get to cover all this info while we were hanging out....I AM AMAZED!!! Anyway, I have sadness to share, also. I have lost 90% of my cd's in this helluva move. I had autographed copies of BLD and DW, PLUS the live cd's from the Pixies in Chicago I saw w/ Lea; I don't want to go on......I am not happy. Anyway, Lea is working on getting you the pics she took from the show and I am to relay to you that she hasn't forgotten, just been busy. You really have done a wonderful job conveying the experience. I now feel like I was sober while watching...it's all coming back to me : ) I May be coming back to the 'ville in Nov. to see Ali, maybe we can catch a good show! |

CHORUS: AND I’LL HANG AROUND AS LONG AS YOU WILL LET ME AND I NEVER MINDED STANDING’ IN THE RAIN NO, A’ YOU DON’T HAVE TO CALL ME DARLIN’, DARLIN’ YOU NEVER EVEN CALL ME WELL I WONDER WHY YOU DON’T CALL ME WHY DON’T YOU EVER CALL ME BY MY NAME
I'll post the answers soon.

Mojo Nixon - is that a western shirt with shorts? You can take the boy out of San Diego, but you take the San Diego out of the boy.
Great stuff oldman - and Dave scoffed at my claim that you've contributed more to this forum than he in the past 6 months. |

Hey LongGoneDaddy (great name by the way) you are absolutely correct on JOHN DOE!
The man in the white hat, Bobby Bare, has a son, Bobby Bare, Jr. (a/k/a Bare Jr.) that is one of the best singers, songwriters, lead singers and lead guitar players in a alternative rock band (Bare Jr.) from around here in a long time. Bobby Bare Jr also recorded with Frank on some of the Nashville2/Sicilian, guitar and/or vocals, not quite sure.
Waylon's not up there.
Yeah, darwin, I ran into MoJo Nixon Saturday night while he was MC'ing/introducing bands. He's very intense, but likeable. I enjoyed my conversation with him.

Hey, yeah, my bad. My apologies to John and the band.
Yep, David Allan Coe is pretty ugly on the outside and it's a little freaky to listen to him as he mixes preaching with bragging, but a beautiful free spirit on the inside who tells it like he thinks it is regardles of the consequences, huh. Gotta love it.

So, how 'bout the Gentleman in the Hawaiian Shirt? He's been The Man's host during his last two recording visits (October 2004 and September 2005) to Guitar Town.

Matter of fact, they are playing the Speedway Meadow at Golden Gate Park on the same day as the Pixies are playing Across the Narrows in Brooklyn, Saturday Oct. 1.
Wish I could be on both coasts at the same time.

Hey LongGone, you know about his son, Shooter Jennings. He's currently touring and you can check his website for dates and locations. http://shooterjennings.com/flash/index.html

Yeah, correcting the positioning of the name cards was a no-brainer. It was such an obvious mistake that I was wondering if it was a test of whether anyone was paying attention.
And Yep, I agree with the consensus, helluva thread.
I hope you were able to download the "SING FOR JOY" AND "GOODBYE LORRAINE" videos posted by thedude. Those videos themselves are worth the price of admission and all the other shit is a bonus!
