I thought so. First the angle of his pictures, then his hair and glasses and finally the shirt as the last proof. Ha!
So, I take it from your combined pictures that Rich and JBW were there to see Frank, right? Someone else noteworthy in the audience? |

Very sharp perceptions on your part kelladwella.
Yes, both Rich and JBW were there to see Frank. Billy Block (drums on Honeycomb) introduced Frank and closed the conference after Frank played.
Buddy Miller (some of the guitars on Honeycomb) played Thursday night, he also was the leader of the house band for the Awards show on Friday night, and HE WON album of the year for his "Universal United House of Pray"! I didn't see him in the audience for Frank's show but he may have been there.
MoJo Nixon (dj for "Outlaw Country" on Sirius Satellite Radio) was the MC in the Mercy Lounge, which is upstairs from the Cannery Ballroom) Now he's a little on the wild side. I talked to him while Robin Ella was playing up in the Mercy Lounge. Very intense individual. He said he was going to see Frank's show.
I just really didn't walk around the room checking people out as I usually like to do and I did for the other shows. Vicki, Lea and me went right down front just before Frank began his set and really didn't look back. I did have some lady tell me to be quiet in a polite way, but after I finished laughing in her face, I told her to move if she didn't like it. Vicki said she should go home and listen to Frank on her hi-fi if she didn't like the noise of a live show!
Thanks for the questions kella. I'll be glad to answer any more you may have. I'm working on posting some pictures and stories from the conference but it's going slow.

Thanks Dude, Old Man in a Coffee can and Vicki for all the photos, video and commentary!! Thanks for all these for making us feel a little closer to such a cool show!! Thanks again I owe you guys big time YOU GUYS ROCK!!!!!!!!!
I was suprised that Frank didn't focus all the music on Honeycomb though. For some reason I was expecting that. Anyway if someone does have a copy of that preformance, email me and hopefully we can work out a trade. Thanks!

Hey I've got 2 things ready for you.
You may want to buy this magazine for $7.95 and with it you get a nice compilation CD containing "I Burn Today" with Frank's picture on the Cd and you get a nice compilation DVD, both contain a lot of music. The CD and DVD are contained in the magazine so you have them immediately. Paste
Can you guess who the mystery guest is in the center of this photo. This was Friday night, Heidi and Julia went home after the awards show, and I went back out to hear some more music. I'll give you a hint: Once a year for the past 4 years thousands of Roonies have enjoyed his hospitality in Manchester, Tennessee.

Yeah, no shit HJ. I wouldn't be completely honest if I said I wasn't a little disappointed when I learned that The Man would be appearing solo on stage without the Cats. And I was surprised and a little disappointed when he opened up with Nimrod's Son and then went on to play just 4 Honeycomb songs. So yeah, no shit, I WANT MY HONEYCOMB with the Cats! I guess there is still the hope that he and the Cats will set up a Honeycomb residency in Chicago, London, New York for 4-5 Days as he alluded to in one of his recent interviews that Carl posted here. But, I'm not counting on it.

Hey OldMan, I have no idea who that guy is, so I will wait patiently for you or someone else to reveal his identity. As I will wait for more stories, facts, names and pictures from the rest of the convention. The seminars, the concerts, the awards, the parties, ...
But: back to the gig. Was Frank in a talkative mood during the concert? Did he introduce/dedicate songs or interact with the audience? I mean, it was a solo show in a small venue ending a three day conference and he had some friends/colleagues in the audience. |

Hey Kella if you were a Jam Band fanatic you'd know him. In fact you would party with every year for a long weekend. Hang out on his farm.
Anyway, good question about Frank being in a talkative mood. I'm sure some others can add to this but this is what I REMEMBER from his set: He talked about not being given an ID laminate even after he had requested one, and he said a few words after singing "Sing For Joy" when he had attempted to go right into "Another Velvet Nightmare" except that he could no get the "A" Chord or "C" Chord or "G" Chord (not remembering this word for word) out of his mind so he started to play something else, but stopped quickly and said that "no that's another song with an A chord", so he played Mr. Grieves and then "Everytime I go Around Here" to clear his head musically so to speak, and THEN he was able to play "Another Velvet Nightmare". (by the way he was playing from a written setlist that he kept on the floor next to him. After the show I went back to get it but it was gone).
But overall during his set he was not extremely chatty. Maybe some others can join in and add to this.

I could be way off the mark Oldman, but from your little clue I'll guess Tommy Moran. (wrong!)
I'd say thanks for the pics and words, but I think this whole thread in general has been a masterpiece. Bravo, Richard. You've given us all a treat. I'm still in wonder 'Everytime I Go...' was played, I thought these were songs long forgotten by the man.I haven't managed to read everything yet, but slowly working through.
You sure do show us a good time.
And Thedude? You are indeed, the dude. Thanks for the mpegs and the pictures. |

Hey OldMan, Mrs. Dude snagged the setlist after the show (and Frank's guitar pick too!). I'll scan it and post it when I get a chance. It's pretty interesting to see the selection that he was thinking of playing (and a little dissapointing-lot's more Honeycomb stuff) Maybe he was thinking it wasn't a "Honeycomb" type crowd that night.

Ok OldMan, it's Ashley Capps hugging you and Linda. You gave away a bit too many hints. So with a little help of google I learned of the Bonnaroo-festival and it's cofounder Mr. Capps. Never heard of them before, though.
I know you explained it before OldMan, but did you have an official function on the AMA-convention? Did you represent someone, were you doing some business there or were you just a lucky cat (who paid a fortune) to chat with festival-founders and the like?
And thedude, I finally saw the Sing For Joy video and really loved it. Thanks for sharing.

Here's Frank's handwritten setlist for the AMA performance. As you can see, it is quite different from the actual setlist as posted by OldMan.
I can't wait for Frank to tour in support of Honeycomb (duh!). I would travel back to Guitar Town in a heartbeat to see more of these songs live. |

Headache in his thoughts, too. Great stuff, dude!

Damn dude, way to go. You scored bigtime with the actual setlist. Just think, we almost heard Atom, Selkie, Storage, and Violet. It also confirms my recollection that he attempted to play Another Velvet Nightmare immediately after Sing for Joy, but couldn't get the tune correct in his head.
Also it shows where he's staying while here in Nashville (The Lowe's Vanderbilt Hotel).
Do you recall any other things he talked about from the stage, other than what I posted in response to Kella's question?
Once again, glad you enjoyed Guitar Town so much.
Hey fbc, thanks for the props. I've got some other interesting things to relay, but as I said earlier, things are going slow adn I'm stretched a little thin all around right now. And yes, a Honeycomb tour wtih songs from The Sicilian and his back catalogue would be a dream.

Oh yeah, The Man's gonna be here in Guitar Town for a little while longer. He's in the studio as we speak (or type) with Billy Block, Buddy Miller, Spooner Oldham, Steve Cropper, and others perhaps. I had a nice long sit-down with him Saturday morning before his presentation at the conference. At some point I invited him out to dinner early Saturday evening before his set with Mrs. CoffeeCan and myself, however he declined saying that he was going into the studio tomorrow (Sunday) and he still had to do some more song writing. He said he needed to get back to the hotel and get his "POETRY MOJO GOING"! I commented that was similar to writing a Term Paper the night before it was due (of course I stole that reference from one of his interviews that Carl posted here) and he laughed and agreed.
So, he wouldn't tell me if the new material was going to be on the next Nashville album, he would only say that he was recording more songs during his stay here in Guitar Town and he was using most of the same Honeycomb musicians.

AND I GOT TO HELP HEIDI NETWORK WITH ALL OF HER CONNECTIONS AMOUNG ARTISTS, PRODUCERS AND RECORD LABEL EXECUTIVES TO FURTHER HER PROJECTS WITH HER LATE HUSBAND'S VAST CATALOGUE OF MUSIC.

A Close Encounter with The Man
It was about 3 a.m. when I pulled up the driveway, turned off my JBW cd (17th and Shelby) and my truck, and made my way into the back door. Julia was sleeping, but my boy, Garrett, and four of his older friends (one being Taylor my 16 year old neighbor) were upstairs deep into a Halo 2 marathon. Before I went to bed I was able to convince Taylor to take a break momentarily so that he could retrieve his Sony 8mm digital video camera, put it on charge for me and give me a quick tutorial on it’s operation. I then download my still-photos from the evening and slipped off to bed while visions of Frank Black danced in my head (ha!).
I had set the alarm for 7 a.m. but I didn’t stop hitting the snooze button until 7:30 a.m.. Finally, by 8:00 I was in the shower and thinking about everything that I needed to bring with me. Shit, I had a lot to do and only one hour to do it. Before leaving the house, I chose a Frank shirt, I grabbed my other Frank shirts, I packed up the Sony 8mm, the tripod, my still-photo camera, kissed the wife and kids and away I went as quickly as possible.
On my way to the seminar I had to stop by Walgreen’s and purchase some Sharpee pens. However, because it was Saturday morning the traffic was extremely light and I was downtown at a parking lot within 10 minutes of leaving West Nashville. Another 10 minutes later and I was walking through the convention center doors on my way to room 209/210 “From Production to Mastering”. And 10 minutes after that my tripod was setup, my Sony 8mm had been tested and ready to go, and I couldn't believe no one was here yet and it was already 9:00 a.m.
So instead of hanging out in an empty room I decide to take a stroll and capture some of the conference’s trade show on film. After shooting a few minutes of panoramic views of the trade show, and while my camera is still rolling, all of sudden emerging from around a corner of the hall is The Man. He’s by himself, dressed in casual dark pants, a blue oxford button down shirt with the first two buttons undone, and sandals. He’s talking on his cell phone and as soon as he sees me, approximately 10 feet away, I can hear him say to the person he’s talking to on the phone, “Well, at least one person here recognizes me.” At this point he walks past me, gives me a smile and nod and proceeds up the staircase while he continues to talk on the phone.
As you can imagine, I’m pretty excited, but I try to remain calm. I decide the best thing to do is walk across the hall and back into Room 209/210 so that I can re-check and re-check my readiness status, i.e., 8mm will fit on tripod, Frank t-shirts in my bag, 4 new Sharpee-pens in my pocket, backup batteries in my pocket, etc…yep, everything was ready.
I did make one adjustment to the room. There were approximately six persons on the presentation panel and their names were printed on table signs and placed on the table in front of their chairs. Someone had put Frank’s name down at the end of the table. I quickly remedied that by putting The Man at the center of the table where he belonged.
Just a few minutes later, at approximately 9:30 a.m., in walks The Man. No one else, just Frank. I’m sitting on the back row trying to restrain myself, and after 10 seconds I figure it’s time to introduce myself. So he comes over to me, smiles, shakes my hand, and sits down next to me. I mean I’m the only other person in the room. I tell him my name and I ask if I may call him Charles, to which he responds, “Sure.” My next question, “So, how’s everything going man” was well received and for the next 30 minutes we sat along the back wall of room 209/210 and talked.
I shared with him that I no longer believed in “soul mates” because I thought I would live happily-ever-after with my first wife and she broke my heart. At that, Charles nodded with compassion.
He asked me if I was an artist or in the music business to which I responded that I was a divorce attorney and mediator in Nashville and that I had some artists and music business folks as clients.
Eventually we discussed his plans to record some more songs while he was here. He said he was going to use most of the same musicians he used last time [for the Sicilian/Nashville 2 album] including Billy Block, Buddy Miller, Steve Cropper, and Spooner Oldham. [I have since found out that he is recording in Cowboy Jack Clement’s "The Cowboy Arms Hotel and Recording Spa" here in Guitar Town, the same studio he recorded the Sicilian/Nashville 2 album].
A few minutes before the seminar was to start we wound down our conversation and Charles took his place at the “Podium” [table actually, I just wanted to say “took [my] place at the podium, know what I’m sayin!]
There were six presenters on Charles’ panel. They were all top-notch producers, recording engineers, mastering engineers, and one studio musician. I’ve got their biographies somewhere but maybe you’ll recognize some of their pictures. Steve Tviet is a friend of mine and he was sitting immediately to the left of The Man [thanks of course to my rearranging of the names at the presenters’ table].
[I’m going to have to continue this and leave you with some photos right now. I’ll review my notes and tape, and try to finish this section soon, thanks, CoffeeCan.]
Garrett, Taylor, and two friends deep into their Halo 2 marathon at 3:00 a.m.
A sparse but inquisitive and appreciative audience
?????, Charles, and my friend Steve Tviet
The panel of presenters
A surprise for later
