Remember this hint from Jon Tiven about a Honeycomb show:
http://forum.frankblack.net/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=12767&whichpage=2

Well, check it out, notwithstanding the COR photo, here's confirmation of the Honeycomb showcase that Jon Tiven hinted at in the Sicilian-Nashville Sessions 2 Thread (you gotta wait for the page to load and then scroll down to Sept.10th: http://mercylounge.com/live_music

So, make plans to come on down to Guitar Town September 10th and get your live Honeycomb showcase at the Cannery Ballroom. It's all part of the Americana Music Association's Annual Conference here in Nashville September 8th, 9th, and 10th, 3 days of seminars, live music, an awards show, and plenty of cocktail parties. http://americanamusic.org/php/index.php?content=conference#about It's really a good deal for the money and if you can't make it for the 3-day conference then you may want to consider buying a $25 wristband (good for 3 nights at 4 clubs) http://americanamusic.org/php/index.php?content=conference#wristbands and attend The Man's 'Comb show on Saturday, Sept. 10th. Just get there early, Frank's playing the Cannery Ballroom, a small venue, and the one which will be the premier venue of the night, ending the conference, and featuring a special guest.

And, if you can make it, well then, post me up here and we'll make some Honeycomb party plans!

Sir Jon, when you're a liberty to say, please let us know all that you can about this show, including which Honeycomb musicians will be playing at this gig, if any, whether The Man will be speaking at any of the seminars, and other upcoming Honeycomb showcases or tour dates.

Well, I'm happy for all of the Nashville folks! I want to go to this so much and it's only four hours away, but I just don't think I'll be able to. Please play in Atlanta, Frank!

Sad but true...

BUT: I´m sure we´re in for some first class reviews by everyone who goes to see this. OldMan set up a pretty high standart with his Rich Gilbert threads. And these were just for practice. I´m expecting no less for this one...
Tons of cool fotos, nice review of the whole evening, of who was in the audience, a setlist, interviews of Frank and the rest of the band, etc...

I'll be expecting a top quality (soundboard if possible) recording of this show, to be seeded on the dime within 24 hours after the show ends.

So, Oldman you gettin' this? That's a...

1) first class review of the gig, nice too
2) tons of fotos, and they better be cool
3) setlist, if still in the Cannery and not been chuck'd out
4) top quality recording of the gig, soundboard if possible
5) exclusive post-show interview with FB and band
6) and a bag o' fries to go

some of the list maybe unattainable for just one Can, we understand
but remember, when in doubt, Carpe Diem

The thread has spoken
Luck to you

Damn, I love you guys...just like family, you are,...giving me props and shit at the same time, you gotta love it!

HELL YEAH, I'm gonna give you everything you ask for and more if I can. As I've stated before, I've got no connections, but I've got a lot of luck and "I'd rather be cocky and lucky than humble and good any day!" And, yes fbc, when in doubt I always Carpe Diem, after all life's too short and too good to miss.

The only item on the list that I will not try to obtain will be the recording of the show (and I realize this request was made in jest). I don't think that would go over too well with The Man and everyone else that has a financial interest in Honeycomb. I'd probably get caught and excommunicated from "all things Frank" for ever and ever (much like hell on earth, if you will), so I'm not even going to attempt that. But everything else looks possible!

My strategy consists of Plan A and Plan B.

Plan A: I'll try the "hi Frank, I'm one of your uber fans, and all of us at your unofficial/official website, frankblack.net, would love to see some intimate photos of you and the Honeycomb band pre-gig, during the show, and post-gig, so please don't call security on me, and by the way a full view of your inner most emotions and desires would make a great read for everyone at fb.net, here's a big 'ole paperbag of french fries with plenty of salt and ketchup on the side, and a bottle of single malt scotch to wash it all down,...so, tell me Chuck, what are some of your biggest fears?...

Plan B: Spellbind Frank with the two beautiful women at my side (Mrs. CoffeeCan and Heidi), get out of the way and allow them to work their magic, and while Frank is blissfully distracted, get him to say yes to all my requests!

I think Plan B will prove to be the most successful.

And, hey Kathryn, little kids don't know one black letter day from another, so..., just celebrate your daughter's birthday a few days early or a few days late. No harm, No foul!

Will do Dean!! Welcome back!! :) Can't wait to hear about his travels.

Derek says hi back!

It's Pearl Jam and we're going to catch them in Thunder Bay, ON on Sept 9th... we're turning it into a long weekend of catching some hiking and canoeing as well

They are a great band... but you know given the choice if I knew what I know now we would have maybe gone to a diff CA Pearl Jam show and flown to Nashville to see Frank and the inlaws. C'est la vie!

Yeah, Brother fumanbru, I'm sure The Man's gonna be spreading that Honeycomb-love all around. A road trip certainly isn't out of the question for me, I'd love to hook up with some other 'Comb Cats for some more shows if my calendar's open and I've got some extra cash (baby needs a new pair of shoes, huh!) But, you know, pretty much anywhere SouthWest Airlines flies is affordable if it's too far to drive.

If someone gets cold feet and backs out of the wedding, let me know, I'll get you a wristband and you can make a weekend of it.

Hey Vicki, yeah, I read you post over in "Rich Gilbert on Tour" in GENERAL FRANK BLACK CHAT. So, how was the show and how was your encounter with the Duke of Fender? Helluva musician and a good guy too!

Are you coming to Nashville for the AMA conference or for the shows on Thursday night, Friday night and Saturday night?

If you're gonna be here Thursday night you gotta go see LUCERO Thursday night, 11:30 p.m. at the Cannery Ballroom (Buddy Miller, who played some guitar on Honeycomb plays after LUCERO and you don't want to miss him either). Here's another publicity shout out for them, go to this link and check 'em out. Joshua Black Wilkins turned me on to these guys and I'm diggin their new CD, "Nobody's Darlings" [LUCERO "Nobody's Darlings" [http://luceromusic.com/av.cfm . Check out the 5 full songs and the 2 videos at their website] There gonna be here Saturday night, August 6th with "The Legendary Shack Shakers" and "The Reverend Horton Heat", playing a parking lot gig at the Mercy Lounge, and then word has it that LUCERO will play an inside show late night in the Mercy Lounge after the parking lot gig.

Friday, as you said, includes Caitlyn, Thad and Rich Gilbert!

And, of course, Saturday night belongs to The Man!

I haven't heard who any of the special guests are yet.

So, what do you think? You might as well make a 4 day weekend out of it, huh!

I LOVE THE REVEREND HORTON HEAT!! AND FB OF COURSE.

would love to come. i've been thinking of different options.

1. convince my friend not to get married.
2. convince my friend to get married at oldman's house with fb and musicians to perform at the wedding.

option 1 is a bit too selfish and bad karma. i like option 2. that would be fuckin cool. do you think frank would do a wedding gig? when i got married i was secretly hoping that would be my wedding present from mrs. fu. didn't happen but we did get the dj to spin a couple of frank tunes. that made me smile. plus getting married to mrs. fu or course.

Yeah, Brother fu, I do think Frank would do a wedding gig, however, since this Pixies thing has been so successful I'm sure his price has gone up considerably.

How 'bout a double bill of Joshua Black Wilkins, featuring Rich Gilbert, and LUCERO! It won't be cheap, but it'll damn sure be a wedding not soon forgotten! And, yeah, if you pay for everything you can have it at my house.

[Hey fu, where was that picture taken, and what's the story on it, that is in your profile here at fb.net?]

As for The Reverend Horton Heat, I've known of him and his band for some time now, but I've never really listened to any of their music. That show is this Saturday night, August 6th, parking lot gig. It should be a good one.

ya, i'm sure frank's wedding gig fee has gone up substantially but i'm sure we could arrange a fbnet discount. but hey, it's only money. who can say that they had fb play at their wedding?

j.b.w, rich, and LUCERO would be great as well. (but that's plan B)

definately check out the reverend horton heat if you have a chance. very fine texas hillbilly rock n roll! i know oldman will really dig it! i've seem them live before and you won't be disappointed.

thanks for asking! so here's the story. i've told it numerous times on the forum but i never get sick of telling it. so i'll do the honours and give you the long version since i know you will appreciate all the little details and background. sit back and enjoy. (and apologies in advance for slightly taking the thread off course.)

back in 2002 the catholics were starting to tour and announcing tour dates. up to that point i have seen the man live twice- in minni and chitown. both absolutely amazing shows! winnipeg, my hometown, has never had the pleasure of hosting frank or the pixies and wpg has lots of frank fans!!

so i emailed the record companies asking them if they could be so kind and forward on a message to mr. black from a devoted fan. it went something like this...mr. black. love your music, been listening to your material for the last 10 years. you are the king! lots of fb fans up in wpg who'd love to see you perform live. we'll promise to sell lots of tickets. warmest regards, fu.

so anyways, a week after i sent the email, i see on fbnet that fb&c's are doing a western canadian tour and playing in winnipeg!! no shit. how excited was i? did frank get my email? maybe, maybe not, but FRANK DEFINATELY CARES ABOUT HIS FANS. call me kukoo, but i truly believe that i have some cosmic connection with the man and his music. my baby daughter was born on the same date as his son jack thompson!! how cool is that! close encounters of the third kind? i don't know but frank's music touches me like no one else's. (please no lewd remarks joey joe jo jr.)

so anyways back to the story. tickets went on sale for a beautiful intimate venue, but much too small for fb&c's. 400 person capacity only!! WTF! so i got up early, made sure i was first in line and got 15 tickets. there was no way i was missing out. there were about 8 harcore frank buddies that i got tickets for and 7 more to those friends with solid musical taste but for whatever strange unknown reason had yet to join the fb cult. not surprisingly, tickets sold out in a few days. i felt bad for all those fb/pixie fans who missed out. so anyways, to my delight they decided to change venues to a hall that holds 2000 people! and yes it did sell out!

then a very nice fbnet forum member from winnipeg, Qris, sent out a message on the forum saying that he was out of town and couldn't believe that he missed out on getting tickets. he pleaded for help. it turned out that one of my friends was unable to go to the show, so i offered up the ticket to Qris. the ticket was only $20 ($20 to see fb&c's- total insanity!! best $20 i ever spent) so this guy ends up forcing $60 on me. i'm like, no way bro, $20 max. he insists and says he's eternally grateful. so i ended up taking the extra $40 and forwarded to the fbnetsite, knowing they were asking for small donations to run the site. the least i could for the fabulous people that make this site happen.

so anyways, getting there...

the show was absolutely amazing! mrs. fu, my friends, and i had an amazing time. and it turned out that Qris is a professional photographer. i saw him at the show and he was first row snapping pics. he later generously burned a disk of concert photos for me! talk about good karma!

so i had heard from the forum that frank would often sign autographs for fans after they hauled all of their equipment off the stage and onto their bus. so, of course, i brought my camera and a few fb cd's. my wife, a couple of friends, and i got to chat with the man after the show. he was so GRACIOUS. that day the band drove up from minni in a snow storm (probably a 9 hr drive), performed a high energy killer 2 hr show, then preceded to load all their equipment to their bus- then take time to talk to their fans!! INCREDIBLE. i'll never forget this. you couldn't wipe my stupid grin off of my face. so he signed a couple of my cd sleeves (one to fumanbru and the other to jenny aka mrs fumanbru and put YIA- yippy-iye-aye), chatted it up a bit, and took a few photos. i'll post a few of the pics below. frank was smiling and having lots of fun. he did look exhausted but could tell he really enjoyed our enthusiasm.

we chatted for about 5 minutes. i can't really remember what we talked about. i was just thinking to myself, "holy shit, i just shook the man's hand and i'm having a conversation with him!" i remember my buddy calling him frankus blackus (his former username on the forum). we talked about how great the show was, thanks for coming to wpg, asked how the tour was going, and asked about the upcoming album SMYT's. he knew about the forum and said he would check it out the odd time.

definately a red letter day for fu!

I really enjoyed this little big story of yours. Havn´t read it before. Not the long version, anyway.
Very cool pictures!
And no need to apologize to OldMan. He asked for it. And I´m sure will never ever complain about someone derailing one of his threads with stories and pictures of Frank.

Ach, I wish I had stories like this to tell...

SON! How special was that encounter, huh! And the pictures to go along with the story are priceless. Yeah fu, you da man, 15 tickets, now that's the way to do it. And the photographer situation with the ticket, the extra money, and fb.net contribution...once again you da man, You've set the bar appropriately high here at fb.net. Well done fu!

I love stories like this, someone needs to put these together, a collection of "Encounters with The Man", they are all great reads for uber fans like us.

Check out FranknWeezer's encounter on January 29, 1999: http://forum.frankblack.net/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=13148&whichpage=2

And check it out fu, you got pictures of Frank with his work gloves on, just as FranknWeezer described him in 1999 when he was unloading the band's gear. Very fuckin cool.

Oh yeah, I think your right about this, "...but i truly believe that i have some cosmic connection with the man and his music."

And hey, in about 25 years or so, you, Mrs. fumanbru, Frank and Mrs. Black may be doing you own version of the movie "Meet the Parents / Meet the Fockers" I wonder who will be Robert De Niro and who will be Dustin Hoffman?

thanks kelladwella and oldwiseone! love sharing "encounters with the man" and reading about them. ya, i had read franknweezers story and it sure is great! and nice pic in his profile too! 20 minutes of undivided attention with the man! now thats's a story!

great idea to have a thread about "close encounters with the man". i've read lots of great stories and it would be nice to have them in one tidy spot. on a side note, i saw some sting show on tv about a year ago that was all about some of his uber fans. they tracked about 6 fans and they told why they liked sting so much, how his music has infuenced their lives, and share special stories. it was very touching and they all got to meet sting after. sting was a total class act and said something to the effect that everyone should play music at least one time in their life- not necessarily to make a living out of it but to connect with the innermost part of your soul. that would be great if frank did something similar with some fbnet uber fans for his next dvd!

a few more parts to my earlier story that i left out. so i was very proud to go to the ticket outlet and purchase 15 fb&c's tickets. as i said 8 were big fans and the other 7 liked songs such as headache and los angeles but never really got into his other music. so i made them customised fb cd's with a few pixies song to wet their appetite. i gave one of my buddies the fb/pixie mix cd as a gift and he said, "holy shit fu, are you going for fan of the year award? you're one serious fb geek!" i replied, "proud to be one, but you should head down to fbnet and check out some of these uberfans! there's this one very funny dude from california- goes by the name of floop- i think he's seen the man perform live over 20 times!"

so anyways, we all had a great time at the show and i think frank got a lot more serious fans after that performance in the peg!

here's another pic. it's my frank black shrine that i hang over our pong table in the basement!

Hola Mr Can!
Yes, my friend Lea and I saw the show and it was wonderful. We did talk to him a bit, and he was very accomidating. Hopefully we will see you at the show and I can fill you in! I work the 9-5 thing, so I don't have a lot of time to explore the site much, hence I can't look up people's profile crap, etc. I just post when the mood strikes.

Anyway, Lea and I will be coming to the 'ville on Fri. We hope to catch Rich's show, but we're leaving from Lex., KY, at around 3, so it will be later when we arrive. My friend Ali used to work for BMI and knows a lot of local bar owners (including this venue), so she said she would do the introduction thing on Fri with us, but she has a hairband show to attend on Sat, and won't make it in until later. I don't know if you would be interested, but I could email you and we could discuss all of us meeting up. Ali always has the info on where the after parties are.....let me know.

Anyway

your friend has definately pulled off the best pose ever when standing next to The Man.
i should start a thread in his honour.

And in honour to you, i've honestly never seen frank so happy than he is in your photos.
What an experience!

Wow!

(i would have replied sooner but only just checked back into this thread.
apologies oldman. i''m a little jealous and this thread hurts for obvious reasons)

how's the little one? top teeth coming through this end

You better be resting up Guitar Man, you got Frank and his old band coming to see you soon!

And, I guess you read this: http://forum.frankblack.net/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=13989 and this: http://forum.frankblack.net/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=13999

So, it appears that London may have a good chance of being one of the 'Comb Cats' residency towns, huh!

Anyway

Hey Vicki, I sent you an email.

thanks fbc! ya my buddy did pull off quite the pose. we call him "the show". he kept calling the man frankus blackus so i think it really got him laughing. he was my best man at the fu's wedding. we backpacked throughout europe in 92. oh the stories...

so who else has some stories about close encounters with the man? should we take it to another thread oldman or just continue on? and how bout you oldwiseone? you are the storyteller king. and if you don't have one just tell us how's it gonna happen in good ol' nashville, tennessee!

the little one, aka 7, is fantastic! she loves honeycomb but i have to say she is really digging when the whole family is dancing to the arcade fire. no teeth yet. grandma and grandpa fu were over tonight while the mrs and i check out cinderella man. fantastic flick. highly recommend it. better than rocky!

Yo fu, cool Shrine to The Man, my boy Garrett has one in his room that I'll take a picture of and post here in the next few days. 2 things about your pictures that I wanted to comment on: 1) The Man seems to really be enjoying your company, 2) What kind of face was The Man going for in that picture with you and Mrs. fu, the one where he is leaning to the left and biting his bottom lip?

[Packbacking through Europe with "the show", I bet that was a trip, huh...]

As for starting a new thread, I don't know, what do you think? I'm good either way, we can keep it here or start a separate thread. I guess a separate thread would be more appropriate, huh? OK then, you can start it or I will. I'm at the office for a few hours this morning, but later today I could do it if you don't. After we get it started, you and FranknWeezer can be the first ones to post if you want. You guys can pretty much just copy and paste your current posts, or re-tell the story, whatever you want. Definitely include any and all pictures. I'll post my encounter from October 4, 2004 when the PIXIES played Nashville and post some pictures also.

Alright then, sounds like a plan to me!

[Me & Mrs. CoffeeCan saw Cinderella Man a few weeks ago, loved it, great boxing movie but it offers more than that, including a glimpse into life during the depression in America and what it was like to be parents and responsible for providing for a family during such hardships. Great flick!]

intersting you ask. mrs. fu and i have discussed that one a few occassions. my bet is that it is the "squirrel" pose. i've performed the "flying squirrel" for mrs. fu numerous times but we won't get into that now. frank could go up against any rocker for a pose down. the man is meant to be in front of the camera! i would even say that he could give zoolander a run for his money!

looking forward to seeing that shrine of frank that you have in garrett's room. i've seen that priceless photo of him and the man. what a beauty!

starting a new thread for "close encounters with the man" is a splendid idea. if you don't mind, why don't you get it going and i will copy and paste my encounter and include the photo's. your introductions are first class and you really know how to hook the audience!

i hope people aren't too shy about posting any stories they may have. i've read so many great stories with fans and the man. even the ones where a devoted fan was too nervous to go make an introduction! once the post gets going i can even include another story from our cult of ray road trip to minni (8 crazy fans from the peg going down to minni!) didn't get to meet the man, but "the show" (previous photo) ended up outside the venue (first avenue)in handcuffs and a bloody face!! something to do with "mosh, don't pass the guy"! it was all fun, so hope no one is worried. that's just a teaser. i'll give the complete story later.
