This is one band with whom I run into major arguments when defending them. I love Sigur Ros, they make (in my opinion) stunningly beautiful and fascinating music. I have no problem in proclaiming Agaetis Byrjun and () in my top ten albums.
Yet all I get is "whale music" this, "whale music" that. I don't understand it.
Anyone have strong opinions either way here?

I haven't heard enough really, and what I have heard has been transient, but my uninformed opinion is that its electronica-lite. Would that be fair? Sell them to me Cheeseman.

That would be wrong, rather than unfair. It's not really electronica at all, although they have dabbled (e.g. BabaTikiDido, a soundtrack collaboration). They're difficult to compare to anyone really - if you can appreciate music along the lines of Mogwai and Godspeed! You Black Emperor, then you may like Sigur Ros. They're Icelandic, and sing in such - the vocals are probably the main sticking point for a lot of people, being very high and pure male singing. The music itself is pretty orchestral and grandiose, although still featuring traditional rock instruments like guitars, drums, organs etc., and the style is more based around longer 'pieces' rather than traditionally-structured songs. It's pleasant to listen to - not 'challenging' like all this glitchy electronica, but at the same time, the more you focus and concentrate, the more you get out of it.

I have never bothered to check them out but perhaps I should now. I remember Benji putting one of their tracks (their most famous I would have said) on his mix CD for the first ever swap. It's a stunning song, simply beautiful.
Don't believe the type!

Simon, which song(s) would you recommend as an intro to a curious beginner? Thank you.

Do they really sing in Icelandic? I've read once that the lyrics are jibberish, random made-up words that don't mean anything in any language. "()" in particular sounds as if every song features the same "lyrics", something like "insiyeeuuh insi-iiiyeeiaaaaeeuuuh". Anyway, I love Sigur Ros. I often use their albums to fall asleep to, and I mean that as a compliment. If you would have to describe their sound, I guess Mogwai and GYBE! indeed come to mind, but they hardly do the job. I guess you might as well call them The Mars Volta minus Van Halen plus Polyphonic Spree. |

sigur ros are the bomb! here's the names of the songs from () simon: untitled 1 - vaka (the name of orri's daughter) untitled 2 - fyrsta (the first song) untitled 3 - samskeyti (attachment) untitled 4 - njósnavélin (the spy machine) untitled 5 - álafoss (the location of the band's studio) untitled 6 - e-bow [georg uses an e-bow on his bass in this song] untitled 7 - dauðalagið (the death song) untitled 8 - popplagið (the pop song)
i have to say i prefer the last 4 songs over the first 4. alafoss and the death song are my absolute favourites of theirs by a country mile. it's a pity that they changed the early versions quite a bit for the album - they slowed down the death song lots and sped up alafoss, cutting out the best bits. but i digress.
songs that i'd recommend people start off with are: svefn-g-englar (obviously - which is the song i put on my comp back in the day) ny batteri (if you can track down the extended ep version it's got a 5 minute horn intro which is just brilliant) bíum bíum bambaló & dánarfregnir og jarðafarir (both from the ny batteri ep, but are just phenomenal...bium bium is a very slow building affair which segues into danar which has mogwai-esq crescendos. fabulous) untitled 5 (alafoss is it's name and slow building genius is it's game) untitled 7 (aka the death song - the notes jonsi (the singer) hits at the end of this song are truly impressive - a very emotional song) untitled 8 (aka the pop song - not really a pop song since it's 13 minutes long, but once again genius.
i personally prefer some of their live recording than their albums, but they're just the bees knees mee thinks. especially their show from the 2002 roskilde festival. simon, you want a copy? i'll make you one and send it over if you want?
and a correction: they sang in icelandic on their first and second albums, but sang in a made up language (hopelandic) on their lastest one (). i'm not sure whether it's ice or hope on their new album which is being released in september.
ps: just go raid http://www.sigur-ros.co.uk/media/index.html to get a good overview - a very good selection of free downloads to be had.

no probs simon. it'll have to wait a couple of weeks as i'm in the process of moving. might have to remind me tho. i'll also send a couiple of extra gigs too. montreaux jazz festival from 2001 and vienna from 2002 which are both great recordings. also, what about copies of the svefn-g-englar and ny batteri eps'? these 2 discs are not obtainanble any more and have some fantastic songs on, as i described above... or if you thinbk that's to much of a sensory overload, just the roskilde one = good.

I actually prefer Sigur Ros to GYBE, but I think pretty much any band would be hard pushed to overtake MOgwai in my affections. But its never in question that Mogwai are awesome; people have difficulty with Sigur Ros.

Wow, i acutally think these are clearly the two weakest songs off (), each to their own i guess personally i adore Frysta, Samskeyti & Ebow.
