We're two days into the spakin' new NHL, people. Your thoughts?

Kathryn, you beat me to it...granted I could have put something up yesterday afternoon, but anyway. Dumb to have two topics up...perhaps I'll delete mine and move my comments here.

I always try to be optimistic. I know for sure that most teams will look quite different in terms of makeup. I hope that they can make the game fun again too.

I for one am ecstatic...I missed the game. Yes, they make way too much money (owners and players), but I loved watching, following, etc.

Who else is glad that NHL hockey will be back?

Anyone interested in a fantasy league?

I don't get this "will the fan base still be there? is the sport's future dead?" line of thought.
Everybody I know is chomping at the bit for things to start up again.

I wish I were a fly on the wall during their marathon 24-hour meeting when they hammered it out.

Yes! Start an fb.net fantasy league. You don't want me in it, I'd just say things like "How cute is Jim McKenzie?"

i was in a very detailed nhl pool for about 5 years running. it was very addicting. kind of like the fbforum. lots of fun. and would watch hockey highlights way too much.

glad that they should be playing next year and sounds like the salaries should be much more reasonable. nice that they're tying league revenues with the salaries. seems like much more of a team effort.

and kathryn- jim mckenzie?? isn't he a bit too young for you. ron duguay would be very disappointed if he found out.

I really missed Hockey and look forward to seeing Mario Lemieux play one more season! Who do you think will win the lottery to be able to draft Sidney Crosby?

I agree.

McKenzie's 21, old enough to know how to get the job done. Ron will have to accept this.
Sidney Crosby? That's young.

i wager 1 billion dollars that edmonton gets crosby. and he's good but i don't think he'll ever be the next one. no one will ever come close to the dominance of wayne.

long live sunbelt hockey! Go stars!
I am ecstatic to have it back. Why wouldn't you be? It was a drag to have just nba playoffs this year and no cup to follow at the same time. Ditto regular seasons as well.

I hope that the Penguins get Crosby, although I agree he will not be another Gretzky nor Lemieux. Read that there will be a lot of free agent talent available and teams will be rebuilt. Should be interesting...

Somewhat off topic:

It's 100 degrees today and I was at the town's municipal complex, in the locker room changing after swimming, and the girls' high school ice hockey team was getting dressed to practice in the rink, where they haven't put down ice. They practice in sneakers. I'm sweating in my swim suit and they're putting on all their gear. I took one look at the goalie and just about cried.

But that's love of hockey for ya!

I think the shootout if tied after OT will be exciting. I like the removal of the red line and the shortening of the neutral zone. Should make offense better. I'm not sure about the restrictions of goalies handling the puck. I hope that the officials truly enforce the obstruction penalties all season long.

I think Hockey is well on its way back to be being exciting again. Hope the Penguins stay in Pittsburgh (even though I'm in NJ).

I'll be watching either Rangers-Flyers or Blue Jackets-Caps depending on which 'local' market the comcast fellas decide I am. Can't wait!

Alright, who watched what Wednesday night? And what about the Habs? Michael Ryder was good both of the last two nights.

My loyalty lies with one of the teams that moved south in the mid-'90s, and it's going to be tested now. They only have one player left from when they were the club to which I devoted my pre-adolescent heart, and I don't think it will be as hard as I think to drop them once he's gone.

Anyway, I watched them on Wednesday night, flattered on the scoreboard by a couple of lucky goals during a game in which my hometown team made them look just terrible. I'm not too worried though, it was just one game.

Ryder's pretty good too, everyone seems to think he'll end up being a flash in the pan. Hopefully he can parlay the hot start into momentum enough to forge another solid season and further respect.

Nothing is ever something.

I can't wait to see a goalie get rocked!

It seems so slow with all these penalties being called, kinda sucks.
I might have a different opinion if the oil were any good on the powerplay...

Gretzky, bah, he should be coaching/buying the Oilers!
Either way we won our game on Wednesday.

Did you hear about Gretzky already screwing up? Last night, two games into his glorious coaching career, he already submitted an incorrect lineup card!

Guy should NOT be coaching in the NHL. If he wants to later, okay, but get some experience first. Part of me thinks the league begged him to do it this year so they could use him to heighten the hype for the return of the league.

Colorado's my team, but I'm embarassed to admit it sometimes because they became such a $$$ club. I was a Nordiques fan as a kid and still haven't let go. When Sakic hangs 'em up I just don't think I'll have a favourite team - it's enough to enjoy the game, I can't imagine any team seizing my emotion like they did back then.

Nothing is ever something.

1982, 1994, third times a charm! if we only get to play in the stanley cup finals every twelfth season, i think the vancouver canucks will pull it off this year. judging by cloutiers first night performance it looks like he went to goalie school this off season (he is staying on his feet longer waiting for the player to commit to the shot instead of guessing early).
