The first two tunes were quite enjoyable, the opener in particular, and they’re a band I’ve been meaning to check out for some time; no reason at all other than the name. If that Racing Line song had a chorus that hit me quite like the rest, it would certainly rank as excellent in my ears. If that Love is an Unfamiliar Name song had a singer that hit me quite like what joins it, it would certainly rank as excellent in my ears. The Grates is just a great name for a band, and I enjoy this track quite a bit as well. Didn’t like Honey when it started, but it was only because I expected it to break out into something overly cutesy. By the time it ended I was fully interested. The Babyshambles song had me interested at the start, but hasn’t quite held me as of yet. I’ll give it some time. Late Night Bus is great, I already have plans to put it on a tape for someone. Something about that song by The Cribs just makes me want to laugh. I can’t explain the previous statement any better. Upon seeing the title for The Waltz, I really hoped it would be anything but, just because stuff like that forces me to chuckle. Upon seeing the title of Francis Bacon, I made a mental note to pay great attention to it. I’m glad I did, it’s really one of the best songs on your disc. Neutral Milk Hotel is one of those names that seems to be floating about everywhere but I’ve never really heard them. They sound like a drugged-out bunch. Some days I’ll like it, some days I won’t be able to stand it. Blonde Redhead (another name in New York’s honour!) has been slowly growing on me for awhile. I don’t own any of their stuff yet, but this song is helping me get there faster. They played my hometown a few months back, but I wasn’t there to see it. Never been able to decide whether I like the New Pornographers, but this song nudges me closer to yes. I’ve a feeling this collection will grow on me, but as of now I haven’t wet my pants over it. It seems to me that many of these bands hit their climax before the songs do. Once I get over this, I expect that your disc will have more effect on me. Perhaps I’m just sticky.

Hehe, this review made me laugh. It's a bit like one of NME's reviews when they praise something to death and then give it a 5 out of 10 or something. Your review is not exactly like that, but similar.
I am so pleased that everyone seems to love Doog's song. He'll be well chuffed.

First off, Doog should be chuffed (one of my favourite British-isms). And don't worry, you'd get more than a 5 out of 10 from me if we were doing it that way. I just think it's more interesting the way I did it. Some of those songs really kick ass, and as I said, most of the others had something to make me believe they'll grow on me over time.
I'm just bad about music I've never heard before, it always takes numerous listens before I "get it."

No no I wasn't criticising you for not going hoopla over it, I just thought it funny how the summary didn't seem to match what preceeded it. I'm not offended, simply amused. And I mean that in a nice way.
Now on to more pressing matters. When are we getting your CD? ; )

I sent 'em out several weeks ago, but they were addressed in a rather sloppy manner. I actually posted last week asking if anyone hadn't received it yet. If, by Friday afternoon, it hasn't yet arrived, just let me know. I'll be at home for the weekend and should be able to burn more.
I feel badly about this, truly. That's what I get for rushing everything.

Daniel, by the way, i both secretley love and you hate you for introducing my to The Catholics (the jazz band people, not FB's band) - i LOVE the band, but have been unable to use their best song on one of my mixes, because YOU did already. But they're really great.
I don't think anyone else here was in on that particular swap, were they? I wouldn't be bugged if you used it, just happy to hear I was actually able to convert someone to a new band. That's been my favourite part of these trades, the discoveries. I suppose that's the whole point though, right?

REVIEW: Surfer Rosa faves: Death From Above 1979, Tomahawk, Clutch, Senses Fail least faves: Mastodon, Fantomas, He Is Legend, Hermano As said before, I had some apprehension (despite having enjoyed your stoner rock mix quite a lot) about the CD being too "metal" for my taste. Usually the voices bug me, and indeed some of the tracks (can't remember if it's He Is Legend or Hermano or both) irritate me. And I don't find the appeal in Mastodon, everyone raves about them but to me they sound like every other metal band. Not bad but not fantastic either. Sorry for dissing one of your favorite bands. I'll end my rant with Fantomas. I think... don't kill me... I don't like Mike Patton. I remember 10 years ago listening to a Faith No More record and thinking it was the worst thing I had ever heard. I should probably give it another listen now, but I don't feel the urge to do it... Mind you, I loved the Tomahawk track though, but I suspect it's not very representative of their sound. Is it? OK, now that you hate me even more than before, I'll go on with the good things. Which are, well, all the other songs on the CD. I'm really rocking out to your mix, especially tracks 2 to 8. Death From Above 1979 is excellent, I know you and some others have been mentioning them a couple of times before. I downloaded the album yesterday and I'll probably buy it eventually. Clutch is very good too, both songs. Senses Fail rules. Arctic Monkeys sounds a lot like the Libertines to me (at least the singer), but given that I like the Libertines, and I hate the Babyshambles song Mike put on his CD, I guess I'll turn to Arctic Monkeys instead. I thought My Chemical Romance sucked, only because I saw a crappy commercial on some crappy music channel for their record, but in reality that song is really cool. The last 3 tracks of your mix I have to listen to more, but I think I liked them, especially the Melvins and Isis. To conclude, lots of bands I had heard of but never had listened to, lots of bands I thought sucked but in fact didn't suck at all, at least 3 or 4 bands I'll definitely check out, and a couple of annoying tracks to counterbalance, cause perfection is boring anyway!

Wheeehheeee! You liked Clutch and Death From Above 1979 (2 very sexy french canadian men) - having said that I would have been very very surprised if you hadn't liked DFA1979! I'm fine with you not liking Mastodon or Fantomas - neither are what I'd expect most of the people in the mix to like, just wanted them to be heard - even if it is only once. Arctic Monkeys are great and I think everyone will be very excited by them once they get round to releasing the debut album.

REVIEW: Starmekitten
Favs: "Love and Pain" - Clor, "Apply Some Pressure" - Maximo Park, "Love In a Trashcan" - The Raveonettes Least Favs: "Gorecki" - Lamb Comments: A short, sweet mix that hits all the right spots. A nice sequence helps too, as this mix flows quite well. It also has the song after which i want to name the bar/coffee shop/music venue i dream i will some day open, "Shady Lane." I even didn't hate the 2 REM songs! (mainly b/c i like Burroughs and Cohen)
And with that, i can proudly say that i have reviewed ALL the mixes ('cept my own) from this swap - a new accomplishment for me!

Actually I am not too sure now. I think they may have been greatly over-hyped. My friend played me about 15 songs (should be able to get them for you if you like) and they aren't all that great. One of the two you put on your mix was the best by far. Not bad, but far from the next great thing they are being hyped to be at the moment IMO.

I've got a fair few of their tracks - I do agree with the hype though but in the usual way the british press have gone completely overboard because that's what they do (I've seen your thread Brian and I'm all over that bad boy tomorrow over coffee)
rambling tired - I prefer them to the Libertines - like their slightly dirtier sound or maybe I've become truly Yorkshire and it's because they're local.
Shoot me if I start saying ayyup.

Well, the Sloan track was live and probably off-the-cuff. I think it's a pretty good cover, but you're allowed to disagree. <g>
I think you're the first person I've known who actively dislikes Tom Lehrer. Oh, well. I'm glad you liked most of the mix.
I have so many mixes to listen to, and not much time to do this listening. I've been taking notes on my favorite tracks, but I think I might want to listen to them again before commenting.
I haven't received Tre's mix, by the way.
