I think what may make ROTJ less interesting than ESB to people is that Endor is the only 'new' place the movie takes us. ESB was such an awesome film after Star Wars because of all the diverse locales. Hoth, Star Destroyer sets, Dagobah, Bespin, asteroid field...and each one of these places were exploited to a great degree. Suddenly in ROTJ, the only new place is Endor. Granted, there is the new Death Star, but we've seen an echo of that. And Dagobah created no new surprises. Well, I guess too there is the Emperor's lair. But even in these new locales, the art direction is suddenly completely different than Star Wars or ESB...and it also looked a bit cheaper, or more plastic...something! The overdose of creatures was a bit overwhelming too. I mean, Ewoks can be fun...but not as an army! Jabba's place had WAY too many creatures as well. I think it's because there was too much focus on the creatures in ROTJ as rambling plot-points that disenchanted people. In Star Wars and ESB, they were cute non-essentials basically to color the background, or, at most, to enable key motivations (Jawas kidnapping droids, Luke attacked by Tuskin in order to introduce Ben, barflys in atmospheric Cantina to introduce colorful and shady heroes, Taun-Taun's to save our colorful and shady hero, "Ichut-ta!" to lead C-3pO into danger...etc. etc.). Plus, our main stars were looking haggard. Hamill's reconstructive plastic surgery was beginning to look funny, Fisher real face was starting to show effects of narcotics, and poor Ford simply had nothing to do...in fact, the most animated Ford seemed was his cheesey double-take when he stepped on the twig which alerted the Storm Troopers to his presence. The creatures and the elements overshadowed the people, and the plot-line was a fill-in-the-numbers ho-hum affair. It had it's moments, but all in all, I think it was just a bloated pinata half full of generic brand candy.

Quick question...this has been bothering me since last night:
What could have Obi-Wan done to Uncle Owen during the years between SITH and NEW HOPE to warrant the description of "crazy old man" ? Maybe bring the ghost of Qui-Gon around too often? Or Yoda? Remember when Yoda was slightly senile in ESB (even though he was affecting senility to hide his true Jediness) and crazily rummaged through Luke's dinner? ("Hey! That's my dinner!") Perhaps Yoda was perfecting his method acting on the unsuspecting farmers. It was just bugging the crap out of me last night. Obi-Wan must have done something totally out of character.

Nothing special. Owen doesn't want Luke to risk his life for some damn fool idealistic crusade. And he knows all too well that one day Obi's gonna take Luke with him. That's why he's mad at him. |

Then again, he might have tried to persuade Owen and Beru to let him train Luke and they objected, not wanting to bring harm to themselves from a mean half-brother who tears-ass around the galaxy takin' people out.
And the force is magical and a little unnatural to non-force users...hence "that wizard's a crazy old man" wizard--magic...scary to non-magic people.
then again, maybe it was saber envy. ben mighta made a move on beru. she looked cute in ep.2.

Since Luke was supposed to be hidden from DV shouldn't he have been called Luke Lars.

i agree w/ the explanation about obi-wan, but it still seems odd. i mean, owen is entrusted w/ luke to raise him BY obi-wan and is shown the importance of the child. so i would imagine that even though he knows obi-wan is doing what he feels is right, nearly 20 years w/ the kid probably made him fear for his necessary journey into the force

Yeah, definitely. It's like foster parents fighting real parents for custody or even visitation rights after a few years.

Who said (was it on this board?) that it would be cool if the new life action serie was about Beru?

Not to sound rude but shouldn't the thread be called "Star Wars discussion for the nerd"?

isn't the "for the nerd" part redundant, considering the "Star Wars discussion" part? |

Isn't it also in fact redundant to post that in a thread started by the nerd of all nerds?

next time, floop, consider: "STAR WARS discussion for amateurs ONLY...NO nerds allowed"
and lay out ground rules about being rude.

there's a difference between imparting knowledge and indulding in nerddom. i feel that some people here may be guilty of the ladder.
if you want to have your advanced STAR WARS discussion, please start another thread. this one is more of a beginners level thread. questions like, "what is the force?" and stuff like that. |

oh my god i know about this stuff! i borrowed those first special edition videos from my friend, cos i felt like i was missing out on a huge aspect of modern popular culture by not watching them, but i thought i'd hate 'em. but i liked them! romance, fathers reverting back to the good side and all that mush makes me all warm inside. okay, i have a few questions and points if anyone wants to read them, you may have mentioned them before but i couldn't sift thru all that nerd crap. no offence. okay, what the hell happened to mark hamill's face after 'a new hope'? he almost looks like a completely different person. did he get in a fight before '...strikes back'? is yoda voiced by miss piggy when he first meets luke? do the OC's seth and summer not remind you of han and leia? or am i just blinded by my lust for both adam brody and han(i can't bring myself to say harrison ford. ew.)? did all the drugs effect carrie fisher's acting? she wasn't very good, no matter how great she looked in the damn bikini. did anyone point out the dialogue between luke and leia which something like: Leia: ...you have a power which i could never understand. luke:... the force is strong within my family. my father has it, i have it, and my sister has it*meaningful look* yes you blah blah leia: i know...somehow i've always known. force+leia= crazy jedi princess bitch. in a bikini. so there are going to be more episodes? are the recent ones worth going to see?
