waxing is really quite bad for you, resulting ingrowing hairs that I've thankfully witnessed never suffered, are horrible! I'm all about those removal creams, even though they are a bit icky.

tre - if you exfoliate you won't get ingrown hairs, and even if you do, trust me - it's still way better than what you get shaving. those creams are the real evil in this thread. can you say chemical burn?
c - the brazillian is the whole shebang, they put your legs behind your head and go to town. i think you can get a regular bikini wax without taking your underwear off. |

Oh man. The last bikini waxing I got was with a girl fresh out of beauty school. (didn't know it at the time) The place I went to was really nice Aveda salon, and so I thought everyone would be quite experienced. It was just horrible. She was so slow, and didn't know to put her hand down on your skin right afterwards to slow the pain. I finally, in a fit of pain yelled, "I can't take it anymore!" I felt quite embarrassed, but she was just so bad at it.
Maybe Dayanara can answer this one. Why can't bikini waxing places get Emla cream to use? That would make the experience so much easier! |

| i had to google emla cream. that's a good question, i have no idea. i suppose you could always slab some on yourself ahead of time. i used to do ice and tylenol, which helped quite a bit. |

I used emla cream when I went to go get my tattoo... didn't work stupid emla, makes me worried for the kiddies (but then again the ward nurses probably put it on proper)
I don't like the idea of going for a wax, it is that whole 'lady bits' issue, I had a friend who did a beauty therapy course.. some poor women have it growing down their thighs y'know

now there's a thing I've never done, eyebrow plucking that is, I used to know a girl who shaved hers.. blue shadows on the brow not at all attractive

A general question, but with most cosmetic things, how do you figure out what to do? do you ask people or read in magazines or practise? I've never plucked my eyebrows because I have no idea where to start and where to stop, I asked my girly girls and they say I don't have to because mine look ok (which is a relief because I'd mess it up) but things like blusher and lip liner and stuff... no idea, I tried and looked like a clown so never bothered. I found out I put eyeliner on wrong when my friends asked how I applied the upper lid-line because they couldn't do it, I just sort of scribble it on I saids and apparantly thats all wrong, and I should be using liquid eyeliner and, I mean, how do you know?

The first time I got my eyebrows done was for my wedding.
I've prolly screwed it up since but I just try to follow what she originally did at the salon.
When I put on make-up I just do it how I think it looks good.
I like the cleopatra kind of eyeliner deal.
Otherwise I don't know anything about professionally putting it on.
But it might be comparable to hair, you know when the hairdresser tries to style your hair and its all wrong. Because they don't know your hair type or they try to make it like their own etc.

The eyebrows thing for me personally is just a neatening kind of tweezing - I am over plucked phobic - those weird commas that some women tweeze their eyebrows into freaks me out.
Carolynanna - I agree - I do a better job at doing my own make up than what other people seem to do. (I personally prefer the slightly smudged fucked up look than the uber neat stuck up stepford wife look). Heavy on the eyemakeup light on everything else. |

I am feeling strange now, every women here takes their hair with wax, so they become weaker, and after a while, you have less growing. Shaving is awful, because they grow faster and stronger.
That's one of those things that I do usually. And I don't feel like I'm brave for doing it, you get used to it.
I have also a little machine that I can use in my legs when I don't have time to go to take it with wax. Very helpfull!

Yeah Nic, overplucking is really not good. Neatening is a good word.
Rita, I have that machine too. I keep hoping that it will just stop growing.
I'd pay big bucks to never have to shave again. Big Bucks!
A hairdresser at the salon told me she bought some sort of cream that you put on after you shave or wax or whatever and her hair didn't grow back for 6 mos.
Its funny how its so easy to damage hair follicles on your head and impossible for the ones on your legs.

I thought about the laser treatments, but it takes up to seven treatments and they are like $70 each.
I want to know what cream your hairdresser used. 6 months? I would pay for a product like that. I swear I get 5 0'clock shadow on my legs. Granted they are blond, but I still hate it! One thing I have tried that works is a lotion by Jergens. It gets at least an extra day for me out of my shave. |

are you guys talking about epilators? i heard those were unbearably painful. i looked into the laser route but was told that since my hair is light blonde the laser wouldn't have any pigment to grab onto and it would just peel my skin off. not that appealing, so i shave.

epilators aren't that bad, I had a go, but when it comes to legs and stuff I tend to shave every day in the shower because I cannot stand letting it grow past that
lazer treatment is tempting, for some areas

sisters who brought it to the States, and they have all these

As far as the eyebrow thing goes... if you really want to try it out... chat with your girlie girl friends and see a good place to go to get your eye brows done. I know that they have one in London and I have been to the one in NYC... but vidal sasoon does a good job... they pluck and cut your eyebrow hair. just tell them you want a natural brow and you just want it cleaned up a little.
then watch in the mirror as they do it and just follow what they do... this will build your confidence and teach you how to do it.
as far as make up goes... one of the people i really respect in the business bobbi brown reccomends going to makeup counters at department stores and getting free make overs.
bobbi is a good line because they won't force you to purchase or to fit you in a mold.... just let em know that you're a busy student who likes to go out on the town from time to time... you only want to spend 5 minutes on your daytime makeup... and let them know that you want to learn the proper way to put on eyeliner.
make an appointment there and a few other places and just say you are new to makeup and you want to find the line that's right for you before investing...
then ... purchase what you want there... but then for the most part... they will give you a sheet with all the colors ... match them up and you can get eveything you want at a drug store or mass merchant for cheaper... it's all pretty much the same... check out the brushes for makeup for stuff you may use alot... for example blush... and find simlar brushes at art stores. (bobbi's idea, too)
there is no way you should feel pressured to buy... and that way you will learn a lot of different ways to apply stuff and what looks good to you.
if you do buy stuff at a cosmetics counter... don't be afraid to go back and have them refresh you if you can't remember how to put something on or in what order.
the best thing you can do for your skin is drink water, eat a ballanced diet, don't drink to much, protect your skin from the sun and don't smoke.
of course all that's hard... so do your best... but that's going to help one's beauty last more than any make up ever could!  |

put some on my nasty dry feet a few days ago. i slathered a whole bunch on.... and then just let it sit there on the coffee table under a news paper... then I put socks on and slept with it on overnight...i saw a pretty big improvement.
I was using it mostly before for the hands and the elbows... but i think i like it better on the feet :) |

Whoohoo! That is most certainly the way it's done. Once in my misspent younger years, for my birthday, me and a buddy of mine from work at the time booked ourselves into a spa for full body massages while very much ripped to the tits on e.
It was one hell of a way to do it, if not rather disturbing for the therapists who were amused by the sheer enjoyment we were getting out of their massages. Looking back at it now I wonder if they knew. |

All I know is that my chiropractor knows everything about what kind of meds I take and how much water I drink or how much calcium I'm getting etc. without even asking.
