I was driving into work this morning and I noticed the big shiny red rig haulin' ass beside me. The make of the rig was Western Star. Excuse me if someone has already made the forum aware of this simple fact. I have often wondered what the hell Frank is screamin' about in this song and I think I now know. Another of his truck drivin' fantasies with a citizen's band in hand.
Don't you know that a Star burns best! Or at least the most efficiently if we are talkin' fuel Frank!
Strummer-man I had me a vision!
All of a sudden my water broke! "There was a man Who made a boat To sail away And it sank.". |

I think it's really about your ego, though. Frank wants to be a Western Star!! |

After a couple of listens, it became my favorite Pistelro song. |

Hey Carl. I used to wonder if that is what he is singing about but have always felt that kind of thought pattern would be out of character for Frank.
How hard can it be? When you're a Western Star.

You're all nuts guys. Here's the real origin of the song

BrendanT, I had that same revelation late one afternoon driving thru Wisconsin. Yet another big-ass truck went by me and my eyes caught those two words from Pistolero and the realization dawned on me right there and there.
Frank's so fucking cool.
I wish to also add that I truly appreciate McDave's meowing at the end of that most excellent song.
I still believe in the excellent joy of the Catholics |

I wonder how many times Frank has referred to a seat in a truck as a Moquette (woven textile)? Or A/C as freon bingo? Or even sleeping in his rig parked in a dead end as a snooze in his "cul-de-sac kampong? The wonder of mystical lyrics written by a citta chorister.

Isn't there a hamburger at Carl's Jr. called a Western Star?

I think Western Star is one of the best straight up Rock & Roll songs ever written. There. I said it. |

Western Star might have ended the rock and roll from the first FB&tCatholics era, and began the country/folk. |

Wow. I meant to Google those words before, and forgot. I always thought he was actually taking about actually getting in on with somebody wrapped up in a sarong!! The truck thing suggests that the big screen he alludes to could be a drive-in theatre. I thought Cafe Noir might be the name of some arthouse cinema. |

Wow, I had no idea about the trucking angle to the song. I always imagined it was something more cinematic, but it does make some sense. I was addicted to this song from the moment Pistolero came out, especially the verse about Heroe's period Bowie, etc...always had to repeat this song to the point I thought I would get sick of it. Never have.

"heroe's period Bowie" sounds like...Nero playing his violin. |

I played it a lot on guitar after hearing it a couple of times. Maybe I should have picked it for the Most Underrated Song thread!! |

I had an identical experience. Played it a lot, but never really liked it that much. Then one day it just clicked and I now think it's one of the greats.

I figured "Western Star" was a reference to movie cowboys, but the trucking thing could also work. I mean, we ARE talking about the guy who wrote "Pure Denizen Of The Citizens' Band" and "If It Takes All Night."
I was all out of luck, like a duck that died. I was all out of juice, like a moose denied. |

i always thought it was just about being a cowboy movie star. you know, the shiny star badge of a sherrif, 'big screen turns me on,' movie sets made of plywood - i think its pretty clearly about western films - but the trucking thing is a nice theory

I did some roadie work and sold merchandise around the Midwest for the band back in 2000 and they were selling the shirt with the cowboy with his pistol and a crescent moon on it. And of course I had to get one. It's my favorite, and not just because Dave gave it to me. At that point my favorite FB&TC song was either Western Star or King & Queen Of Siam, so I really dug it. Actually, the first night was the night I first heard most of the songs off of DITS (they soundchecked with The Swimmer, it was divine) so I think it was the night Western Star might have been bumped down a few notches. Alas. It still rocks. That "dancin' to the new Bolero" part is so fundamentally groovy. |

Yes he is. He's also quite accomplished at short little "yeahs" and "uhhs" and "uhh huh, yeahs". Ex: Go Find Your Saint, etc.
The Fonz was never so cool.

This is what's great about Frank's songs, and poetry in general; You're driving around one day, and it hit's you! That's it! That's what it means! And on another day; no, that's not what it means. In the end, it means what it means, or it doesn't. But it means what it means to you forever! Know what I mean? |

Hey Kathryn, I was talking about the little huh huhs and the like. That has to be Frank. For another band member to do those would be really impossiblehuh. Listen to Saints. Real loud. Fuck yeah.
Oh, by the way Jeff. Fuck yeah.
I'm so proud of Frank.

Sometimes Dave really nails those back-ups. Other times, it's like, I wonder how, er, or why, um........ the other guys must really struggle with live harmony parts.
