A friend of mine is working on this project and he could really use your help. This is a question for you British members: In your opinion, what is the most popular leisure activity in Britain? Something relaxing, yet (to some extend) exciting (it has to be an activity of some sorts, not just sunbathing in Spain), something every average, typical British person considers an ideal and perfect way to spend your free time and relax? It has to be very typical for Britain and for British culture. Any suggestion will be much appreciated.
PS: You are allowed to say sex but please suggest something else as well.
[edit]: The title was too long so I had to write "UK" instead of "Britain" |

on a lazy sunny afternoon there's nothing nicer than hitting a beer garden with friends. when she's shining there's no better excuse for a beer, especially over the weekend.
Or sex. |

I've never been to the UK but from reading American magazines lately, I would say "dogging" is the current stereotypical Brittish activity. I could be wrong.

alot of folk round here head to the chase (a place of greenery, hills, bridle paths, picnics, trees). basically enjoying nature and the outdoors. Me, I used to go throw the aerobie, kick a ball around and enjoy my own greenery. Pretty popular around here too. |

Ooh Kathryn almost forgot - on the train the other night definite shagging in the club class toilet!
(of course my first assumption was "toothing")

According to certain French media, binge drinking is the most popular leisure activity in Britain right now. But we don't necessarily believe them.

The comedian Eddie Lizzard does this whole bit about British people riding around on Vespas. It is hysterical! I would recommend your friend rent a copy of his stand up routine. Might provide some great ideas. |

I heard yesterday about some japanese game being ultra popular in the UK right now. Something like crosswords with numbers. Perhaps some Brit can explain.

That's OK Kathryn. Just please explain to my ignorant self what is dogging and what is a binge, and in the future can you please somehow mark which suggestions are serious and which ones are jokes? Like maybe add a little * symbol at the end of any serious suggestion (if there ever is such a thing), hmmm? (And maybe a ? symbol if you're not sure if it's a joke or not?) |

You gotta love Google:
"Dogging is a predominantly British activity that involves outdoor exhibitionism in car-parks, wooded areas and the like. The term dogging originated in the early Seventies to describe men who spied on couples having sex outdoors. These men would 'dog' the couples' every move in an effort to watch them."
http://www.swingingheaven.co.uk/dogging/ Link probably not suitable for family viewing.

Saturday night binge drinking till the pubs throw you out at 11 and then fighting in the queue for kebabs/taxis over anything* The following day is then spent watching shitty soap opera omnibuses on television and then moving back to the pub for more drinking and maybe a curry or fish & chips afterwards*
(Binge drinking is essentially throwing as much booze down your neck as quickly as possible - the drinking laws here are archaic. Most pubs close at 11 at night - so there's a mad rush to get as drunk as possible before they stop serving.)
Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes. |

A US definition of "binge drinking" is drinking with the intent of getting severely impaired and doing so several times a week. I tell ya, it's the favorite activity of most college students in the States.
Elevator Lady, I'm not sure if I should add an * or a ? at the end of that. I am only slightly joking, mostly dead serious. Just google dogging if you have more questions about it. Then brace yourself.

That's about Italians, but yeah it's very very funny.
A lot of males here play football (soccer), watch football and talk football. A lot of women watch reality T.V programs, read about reality T.V programs and, yes you guessed it, talk about reality T.V programs. I am not kidding.
Our youth enjoys hanging around in gangs and slapping passers by, usually filming it on their mobile phones. It's called Happy Slapping and it's gotten serious enough, apparantly, to warrant a news program being dedicated to it.
And yeah, the British sure do enjoy their alcohol, although more and more of them are doing it at gigs nowadays, which is good.
I guess floop WAS right!

Yup, and really hard too. One guy is deaf in one ear 'cos he had his ear drum perforated. Another who fell asleep in a bus shelter (drunk I presume), was set alight. He survived but is in constant pain and is severely scarred for life. They are just trying to outdo each other now.

I think the drinking is the closest to the truth although to be fair, that tends to focus on the younger generation.

staffordshire at the moment it's very quiet at times, but only a bike ride away from rolling hills, deers and ducks. Trees everywhere. I really want to work for the Forestry Commission here. That would be neat.

A popular pastime in the south east at least is joining a crazy cult called - the way of the chav. Includes wearing over the top bureberry outfits, every evening roving about their 'patch' in packs of other chavs and getting as many 14 year olds pregnant as you can.
