I threatened it, now I'm starting it. Floop controversially argued that Italian bread trumps French bread. Controversial because, although Italian bread has the variety and a very beautiful consistency and texture, when French bread is done right the simplicity and flavour is just superb.
Of course, there are many other contenders. Some personal favourites are the big, round Greek loaves (a little saltier, and quite coarse); naan bread (always, always good); a big British tin loaf isn't quite the artform that a continental bread is, but it's still good.
Let's discuss bread.

I couldn't live without bread! I am so sick of all this low-carb Atkins brainwashing.
For me, nothing is better than my mother's homemade bread. She rarely bought bread when I was young. She always made it herself, and it seemed like the house always smelled of fresh bread.
My personal favorite is her sourdough. You know the kind that is made from a starter that is passed on from person to person. My mother had a ceramic jar in the kitchen that she kept it in, and I always thought it was so mysterious how that awful smelling liquid yeast could produce something so wonderful as fluffy slices of sourdough.
One type of bread I am not as fond of is bread that is too crusty and hard. It seems to be popular in several bakeries in my area and I just don't get it. They call it "rustic" which just cracks me up. |

Farls and Ulster? So sorry...never heard of that. My great, great grandparents came over to America on a cattle boat from Ireland but they left there Farls and Ulster behind.
I was thinking of a recipe along these lines:
IRISH SODA BREAD
2 c. flour 1/2 tsp. salt 4 tsp. baking powder 1 1/2 tsp. caraway seeds 1/4 c. sugar 1 c. raisins (soak in boiling water, then drain) 1 egg 1 1/4 c. milk 1 tbsp. melted butter
Beat egg, milk and butter. Gradually add dry ingredients, mixing well. Add caraway seeds and raisins. Bake for 45 minutes at 350 degrees. Makes 1 loaf. This recipe won second prize in Irish Soda Bread Contest in 1979.

my favourite bread is just a freshly baked white loaf. done well it can't be beat. oddly for finding that the UK had the worst bread i have ever eaten, it also had the best loaf - said, freash white loaf from the Woolwich Arsenal branch of Sainsbury's.
and whats the deal with having the bread bag just a picture of Baked Beans...i never did understand that.

Or focaccia without formaggio ('cos I am not sure you could call that bread)- and especially the original one, from Genoa, ITALY.

Or any of the insane number of breads known as focaccia
And one of the oldest grains, Amaranth

Oh, I see... but by that rationale then "pizza" would be a bread, too- and that is just wrong ;) |

Wholegrain rye - good solid stuff, not air filled white glue

Yes but my suggestion has a bready foodstuff in its name and that gives it extra credibility in the bread-stakes. |

Would you say that theoretically there is something wrong with a theoretical person who, theoretically, does not like bread?
Just wondering.

but how can you go out for an Italian meal without first eating fresh, perfect bread (dipped in olive oil and basalmic vinegar with mounds of freshly crushed garlic, and some crushed black pepper) ? |

As delicious as you are trying to make that sound there are so many other things on the menu at Italian restaurants that I'd rather eat than bread.

Shall I try make up for it in the barbequed fish and meat department instead?

Seriously - when you're eating a sandwich isn't the bread just a container to keep the really good bits all in place?

are you a low-carb dieter, or do you just honestly not like the taste of bread?
i think bread (and carbs in general) are underrated.. it's not so much that it tastes so great by itself (though it can), but the combination of it with other foods..
without bread, a meatball sandwich would just be a bunch of meatballs..
and how can you have eggs and bacon without toast? |
