Hmm... How about I'm frightened of our relationship becoming too close because I'm confused as to whether one should have friends and lovers separate or together.

Wow, lots to digest. I personally think that I wouldn't marry anyone unless they were a great friend and love. If I have to outsource my friendship, then that speaks to a fundamental failing with my female counterpart, I'd say.

As always, the key is moderation. I never had any secrets from my last serious girlfriend, and felt we could talk about anything, but I also relied on her too much as an exclusive friend. Instead of talking with other friends, I became centered around her and she around me. I could still have fun with other friends but they were seriously neglected and that was a mistake I'd not make again. I went overboard making her my only friend instead of a close friend. While that's dangerous from a personal development angle, I think that going the other way and not being completely open is equally dangerous for the relationship's development and health.

Finally, Tre, I agree that there is something wrong with the relationship if you can't bring something up, but not that it's necessarily your partner's fault. If you (not YOU specifically, general) can't bring it up, maybe you have trust issues. Or other issues. People are too afraid to speak their minds, which to me indicates that maybe they're not really being themselves in the first place. This happens lots with people who go relationship to relationship and never have single/alone time to define themselves first.

And on the topic of 'metrosexuality', I think it's as ridiculous (a term) as it is to assume that the only people with feelings are females and the only people who can be strong are males. I mean, are we that willing to give in to the stereotypes? Can I not enjoy a good romantic comedy like Keeping the Faith or Meet The Parents? Can I not shed a tear for the family at the end of Fiddler on the Roof? Can I not dislike the redneck aspects of sports? Or have interests that lie outside them, like music and writing and lyrical content that doesn't involve bashing skulls?

What is metrosexual? Just some guy who doesn't fit the male stereotypes as defined by 1960s television and perpetuated thereafter. I'm just a guy. I like hockey. I like dressing moderately well (don't judge me by my wrinkled European getups this summer!). I like women and sometimes get so wrapped up (i.e. yesterday) thinking about them (in various naked ...err...) that I can't even focus on my work for like an hour.

Anyway, that's my rant. Viva la revolution!

i'm a sensitive guy i guess - the last time i cried was friday, and it was not from a fightt, or the loss of a loved one, but a friend talking about her father's terminal cancer. but i also love baseball and beer.

i think it is unhealthy for the two extremes - men that are too 'macho' tend to do things that really piss me off, like sport hunt, be homophobic, be a walking erection and generally be a prick. but i think there are a lot of guys who are the other extreme and who lose all of their "male" habits/behaviors - and that has nothing to do with sexual preference. the girliest guy i know is straight and the toughest guy i know is gay.

the answer, to me, is just be who you are. if you have a soft spot for kittens and like dirty sex, embrace both. don't be afraid to be complex. i just thought up a slogan for my record label today that fits this very well - 'the future is genre-less" - be unique, don't fall into a stereotype.

some good points here. i have to say that tho' stereotypes are ridiculous i like it when men and women respect some general, old fashioned maybe, behaviours. i don't like for example girls who are totally into sports in a macho male way or guys that are acting "sensitive" all the time like talking about internal decoration or soap operas or whatever just to prove that they understand the other sex.
i don't think that i'm a neanderthal and i am interested in what women think but i do like footbal and beer and i do want to go out with my friends alone every now and then, and the same thing i want for my partner. it's unhealthy sticking always together exclude all others from your life specially in the unfortunate case that you break up and end up with no life at all. and i don't believe that there is actual friendship between a couple. friendship is completely altruist whereas in a relationship there is always the love-sex factor that makes it completely different. that's why i can't even talk to any of my ex's let alone be friends.

I kind of agree with mun chien. I tend not to speak to ex's either, and none of them have been as close a friend as some of my regular friend's. Perhaps it's 'cos we haven't had as much in common as me and my friends (which is a hell of a lot - if I fancied my friends, I would almost certainly have married one of them by now).

well i thought of this and i concluded that

a)all the girlfriends i had, had nothing in common with me (musical tastes or common friends etc) apart a generic common vision of things so after breaking up there wasn't much to say

b) i just can't treat a girl who i've loved or even had sex with as a sincere friend mainly because there have always been harsh feelings or non friendly expectations from one of two sides after breaking up.

said that if having things in common was the only really important thing in a relationship i'd probably marry too my best mate who's practically my spiritual twin.

tell me about it. actually don't tell me about it. it's depressing .

i find that sex with exes (that should be a band name) usually isn't that great. unless you're drunk enough.. because if you're broken up, there's always those lingering thoughts of what it is that you don't really like about the person, which is kind of a turn off.

but then, mediocre is better than no sex

Kitty I think we need to start a metrosexual topic so we can both vent.

I have generally managed to stay friends with most of my exes since quite often the whole reason we landed up together was shared musical interests (I've always been a sucker for a guy with a great cd collection and knowledge to match) and one of the things I enjoyed the most was going back for the odd bit of good sex when I was single. Having said that I'm now living in a different country to them and have pretty much lost contact with them all. (Apart from the one who still buys me underwear!)

The only way to get rid of temptation is to yield to it.

You'd want someone who takes some pride in their appearance though surely? I never thought the slovenly look would take off really. Maybe some women like the Johnny Vegas look...
