Basically all im asking is that if Frank never went back to The Catholics in the future and if they decided to start a solo album without him, would you fork out for it? And if you had a choice of it to be any lead singer with them that might fit who would it be? It cant be Frank... Just wonderin?

that's really tough question because frank wrote all the songs...
Maybe Jack White...

Of course, as a fan, I would buy a Catholics sans Frank Black album if they were to attempt it.
As for a new front man? Hmmmm. David Hasslehoff.

Little Black, Frank wrote all the songs but thats the best apprenticeship you could ever hope to receive and im sure its rubbed off. Unless they were all brainless monkeys they should be able to take something good from it. I just want another branch, lol

Interesting question but, I hope, one we won't need to really ask. I'm praying for a FB+TheCs Honeycomb tour!
And,yes, I would follow these guys anywhere.
I still believe in the excellent joy of the Catholics |

david hasaloaf could work, he has the same love for the sea, think "the swimmer" as performed by.. and this is Pixies but, picture "nimrods son" as a video with AssoloaF and "KIT" the wonder car dying on some lonesome road singing duet style. |

Oh yeah, there is more than one David in this mix. I was referring to David Hasselhoff.
My goodness, what a charismatic fella, or at least he comes across that way on Baywatch.
I'm afraid that this is just wishful thinking. If he did actually become the new frontman for the Catholics, I foresee much jealously on the horizon. Much like Van Halen and the jealousies that another David, David Lee Roth, had to endure from his other, less talented band mates, until finally he just couldn't take it anymore and he had to leave the band. I'm afraid that David Hasselhoff would suffer the same fate as David Lee Roth. |

If I had to nominate someone to step into Frank's frontman shoes, I'd go either Jack Black or Adrian Edmonson from the young ones

Yeah! There's only one Frank. But the Catholics are part of it for so long now. i will miss them if Frank left them. They are great musicians and gave a touch to each album. So I hope they are coming back.. |

Hey endofmiles, you're preaching to the Choir. Kathryn is no doubt the #1 advocate for FB&TheC's to continue making music together. And, I agree, the Catholics are great muscians who have given so much to their music. |

Hopefully you're right, the Marsist, but the Doors gave it a go back in '72. Kinda scary, eh?

Actually, there are many people named Frank. And Charles Thompson is not, technically speaking, one of them. :P

Someone's been watching Celebrity Fame Academy...
I guess I'd buy a Catholics album because of their previous form, but coming across them as a new band, I'd guess not.
I'd like to see them with Steve Earle or someone like that.

I agree. Also, how 'bout John Hiatt. He's a great songwriter, pretty good singer, distinctive voice, and is a real entertainer, loves to play long sets, leaves it all on stage and holds nothing back. |

Who would be the singer of the Catholics? A good question. David Hasselhoff? I can hardly imagine the C's playing "I've been looking for freedom!". But OldManInaCoffeeCan is right, David had great success in Germany; I know cos' I'm german. For France don't know, it should be hard to convince FB and the C's fans. Let's find another one, please... |

I pray it doesn't come down to it (I mean I REALLY hate thinking about it), but I got to agree Jack White would be a good choice for a frontman. I have a feeling he won't play with his ex-wife forever, and he has a broad musical ability that could keep up with the Catholics. Plus, he ain't too shabby of a songwriter |

Considering the band's name, I think the new frontman should be the Pope.

Steve Malkmus singing wouldnt work with the guitaring i think. The really have to loop the music around his singing because its so antisocial to heavy rock guitar and to calm country guitar. Just dont think the catholics would bother working around him. Hes a prick anyway. Went to a pavement gig in cork and me and my buddy met him in the bog and said "hows it going?" he just turned his nose up and walked off. I love his music but doesnt stop him being a prick. I like the idea of Adrian Edmonson but if he was totally in his 80's 90's punk buzz. I think The Catholics could do punk very well

I don't think i'd fork out for it Susquatch. I appreciate them all for what they do individually and as a collective, but the only real entertainment I get from the Catholics is Rich's lead work. Other than that, the rest are replaceable, unless we hold them to heart. There playing can easily be recreated by others, even Rich's acrobatics on the six string, really they're doing nothing other than being FB's back up band. Isn't that how they started? He just needed a band for a show and the rest is history.
Unfortunately, without Frank, they'd be just another band to me. I haven't even bothered to check out their solo projects away from the catholics, because honestly there's no curiosity or desire inside me to want to listen. |

There is no Catholics without Frank Black.
Well, I mean, there IS...but if they put out an album, chances are I wouldn't be very interested. Not to say they aren't all talented musicians who bring a lot to the table. It's just that without Frank's songs at the core of the music, I wouldn't see myself that drawn to what their output would be. I would venture as far as to say that it may not be nearly as unique or interesting.
All theorizing aside, I would much rather see a solid all-material-encompassing FB & the Catholics show now than another Pixies one. Is grass really greener on the other side? Perhaps. |
