It appears that Cooking Vinyl will be putting out the Frank Black and the Catholics Box Set in the UK and Europe; Frank has mentioned the box set in another thread. I have just received the following from Bob Allen at Cooking Vinyl, please note that you have until Friday coming to influence the content of the Box Set:
"So this is the plan so far..... The concept is for the 6 Catholic albums and 1 disk of rarities and a live album. Any other ideas for cool things to put in the box? Do you think that you might be able to get me a list of anything else that the fans would like to see in this special set? I need to get back to the Boss by Friday though."
Please post ideas/requests here! I will pass on a link to this thread to the great Bob Allen at Cooking Vinyl.

This is freaking awesome. Although if my wife discovers I bought the Catholics albums AGAIN she'll probably ask for a divorce, but nevermind.
Now why is he talking about 1 CD of b-sides/rarities? There should be 2. And I'd like to see the Peel Sessions in the box set too.

yeah, the peel sessions for sure. plus BOTH discs of rairities (one more road for the hit and snake oil). and it would nice if the live album wasn't one heavily circulated (ie. the hearitagain.net shows).
and the demo of 'i'll be blue' with the electric guitars. and the acoustic 'end of miles'
and a DVD

Come to think of it, I'd probably cringe if I had to buy 6 CDs I already have for only 2 bonus discs. And I also have 90% of the b-sides already. So that would make about $60-$80 for a live CD...

I'm not much help here. I'll pay anything, I'll listen to anything. That said, I agree with vilainde. We uber-fans who already own those six albums need a good incentive for doling out that kind of cash so how about neat-o liner notes, photos, etc., things we don't already have?
My vote for live stuff goes to the Shepherd's Bush Empire show. At least "Jane" ought to be included. I'm too excited to think right now. I'll come back later.

But I think Massif Centrale wasn't played on the Shepherd's show, whereas it was at the Slim's show (the one with the Frank/EDF songs at the beginning).

You're right. They didn't play it then, but I am assuming that several songs from different live performances would be included, not a single show.
btw, thanks for this thread and request for imput, 10%er.

A reverse disc, U know this new thing U can play, one side is a dvd the other an audio cd. Bowie recently rerererereleased his latest album in this format...
Side 1 would be a kind of best of (high quality please!) of the Catholics years in live since 1997. Some recordings with Lyle Workman would be great, and some with special guests too... It would be the occasion to have diversity and feel the evolution of the band. And evreyone would get at least one track they don't have (rather than a whole live album already or easilly downloadable... ) The other side would be the shot sessions of the Catholics ,(I think Frank Black Conspiracy told me that it exists) and footage, and extracts of Live shows and else... and please SOME SURPRISES!!!
Remastered tapes with bonus track (accoustic or alternate would be fine)... Oh digipack sleeves please !!!
A huge and beautiful box set, just like Frank Black...

i'm still kind of disappointed it has to be a catholics only, i'd much rather have a fb rarities (including catholics but not excluding solo) box set, and i'm not thrilled about having to buy 6 cds i already have 2 copies of again just for one disk of rarities.
the peel sessions would be incredible. like brian, i have slims and shepards bush. what's a good semi-rare live show to request?
and a dvd, it has to have a dvd. live shows, behind the scenes in the studio, something, anything. please include a dvd.

The problem with this seems to be that the people who are big enough fans to buy all the albums in one go already have all of the albums, a casual fan or someone new to FB&tC isn't likly to make that much of a commitment. It comes down to the live and rarities CD's and basically the big fans getting screwed, or am I missing something here?
Edit: Please put in a real copy of SSMVGD.

I agree that the albums we already have must have some new treatment to make it worthwhile to buy them again (Alternate versions, acoustic shit b-sides, live, etc.)
I too vote for Slims show (EDF!) my favourite catholic year is 2001 a show from that year should be on it too
to make it something special: lots of liner notes by frank, dave, dave, rich, lyle, scott, stan, joey, rob, actually everybody involved!

Uh, I know it's not a FB&Cs recording, but would it be possible to include this REAL REALLY RARE gem:
HELLO RECORDING CLUB (FB + E.D. Feldman), Nov. 93 - 1. Sir Rockabye 2. Calistan 3. Space Is Gonna Do Me Good 4. Duke of Earl.

My ideal (and realistic) box set would include
- good liner notes with all of Frank's self-written album press releases, maybe an essay by an interesting writer/musician/insider, photos we've never seen before
- all the albums
- the two b-sides/rarities discs including ALL of the songs Frank himself put together, as posted here last year at http://forum.frankblack.net/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=5677 (if we don't get all of those tracks Frank mentioned, every single b-side/foreign bonus/etc., I would consider that a severe disappointment and would probably not buy the box)
That's 8 discs so far. Ideally, I would love it if we got a complete Catholics show from start to finish, which could potentially take up two discs. An 11 disc (10 CDs + 1 DVD) Catholics set would be incredible, but I don't think they'd put out something so large. An edited live disc (or a shorter show) would certainly be better than nothing.
So, to consolidate space, personally I'd be happy with no seperate rarities discs and instead adding the b-sides n' stuff as bonus tracks to the box set versions of the albums. I think they'd fit.
(Or to consolidate space maybe one could cram two Catholics albums on one CD, when possible (Would the first Catholics album and Pistolero fit on one disc, for instance?) and then do the seperate rarities disc(s))
Some here may not like the box set including all the albums since you have them already, but I don't think the label would change their mind about this.
One reason why a box set like this for a cult act (like FB & the Catholics) gets released is critical reappraisal. A boxed set of b-sides, rarities, and live stuff wouldn't get taken as seriously as one that includes the albums. All but the most dedicated fans tend to not care about b-sides, figuring they were left off albums because they weren't any good anyway (we all know this isn't true, but this is the thinking). The albums sold modestly in the first place. "If we didn't pay attention to the albums, why should we pay attention to their castoffs?" |

Shoot!
I go to work for a few hours then the forum springs to life. An actual discussion too about Frank and the Catholics. This is so exciting.
I have alot of the stuff already mentioned, which it seems most of you have too. So all I can add at the moment is please, a dvd of some kind. Live footage of the Catholics, anything that's been locked away in the vaults for far too long.
Are there any songs recorded that we don't know of? oh, stupid me, we wouldn't know. I mean songs that have never seen the light of day because the band deemed not worthy. Can we be the judge, please? definately some words to read too. A nice little booklet to muse over while listening to the magic. Hopefully the live disc won't be from just one show for variety, or if it is, a show where the band spanned their whole catalogue if such a gig has been recorded.
oh man, head rush. too exciting a thought.
I hope the rereleased albums include the demo tracks and the songs which were on some of the european versions but not others. |

I'd request a DVD and linernotes by The Man (ala complete B sides from the pixies). fold out poster? individually signed by The Man and The Catholics?
and I agree with FBC...there have to be some songs that we've not heard. surprises are nice!!!

Sorry, no plans for a US release. As you probably know, 92.54% of FB fans are European, and 77.62% of them are French, by the way. |
