I doubt I would buy such a box set. I'd want a disc of rarities, and I wouldn't necessarily be adverse to getting the first two Catholics albums on CD (I currently only own the eMusic versions), but I think the whole thing would end up being too pricy for me.

yeah, ssmvgd would be great. i also like the idea of a live disc made up of songs taken from many different shows.
and now i'm living in the cold but i'm looking for the sign |

SSMVGD must be included, and not as part of a rarities cd, but as its own album, complete with cover art and all.
If there is a live show, I'd vote for a preformance around dog in the sand or pistorelo. I know a lot of great music came after, but of the shows I've seen, that era was the best.

It doesn't make since not to release this in the U.S. That would be a real let down. If most of the FB fans are in Europe or Canada then why don't we have limited release in the U.S.? All I can say is that I would definitely rebuy all the albums if these juicy extras were included. Put SSMVGD in there and it will sell like crazy among all of the people that already have the other albums. Dammit, there is so much FB material floating around out there that haven't go to hear. What's the deal?

I suggest that this box is released on vinyl, since DITS, BLD, and DW were not released on vinyl, this re-release would give me more inscentive to buy the box. I also agree with what Jason suggested (I almost always agree with Jason) about the entire Catholics show being a nice touch, and some FB commentary and photos. Though it'd probably be nice to have a Catholics show from 2002, that way we'd get songs from all the albums (including SMYT and COR; he still played MIB in 2002. But in the SMYT tours he never played any COR songs) |

i think it would be great to throw in some of the (many) Frank solo performances (Catholics songs if they have to be) he's done on radio and in record stores and various venues..

Most of the fb cds i have are burned so this would be a good way for me to make amends in one purchase. personally I would like to see a whole disc of frank solo acoustic. Is it just me or are there gonna be like 8 10 cds coming out this year and a pixies dvd? fucking awesome. i hope frank puts out everything he can find tht he has recorded. i'd buy a cd of frank cutting the proverbial cheese if offered. |

i think i speak for many here. i have a good deal of rareties not not them all. just throw together all the rareties onto 2 or 3 discs and that would be incredible. we all want ssmvgd. we all want live shrimp song. just bundle that crap together and name a price. we'll buy it. |

ssmvgd!
if you have a picture of me, be sure to include, or you can just thank me. jon laird is my name. and instead of putting it in a box, ypou should put it in a bucket. yeh, a bucket set, i like that. make sure you include a picture of frank with jack errol. babies rule. also, i would like a whole disc of "blast off". i say that now, i still might think it in the morning.

Who would by the box? The überfan. Why ask those fans to pay for all the albums one more time in order to get a hold of the rarities, most of which they have in their possession allread? There's plenty of cool material to be included that would make-up a box anyway. Complete live shows, peel sessions, maybe some cool accoustic perforances, ALL the b-sides, bonus-material from albums (the accoustic versions), alternative takes and outtakes from catholics sessions + the complete SSMVGD. A DVD with would completement such a selection and make it worth the money. |

ya, i dont understand the box set idea...... unless its all B-side singles, SSMVGD, live etc... re-releasing whole albums that are already available seems not really a good idea...
I know Frank is worried about the quality of some stuff especially with the concerns he expressed about FrankBlackFrancis... but to be quite honest the Treated disk of that release added nothing to the package, that first Demo CD alone of his early croning is excellent, the extra treated stuff (i listened to about 2 times) was quite boring.....
anyways, my input would be to package up all the stuff (SSMVGD, B-sides and Live etc) onto a boxset. That would be a great document of a great artist. To be fair re-releasing albums is a bit of a cheap trick, cos us uber fan's will defintely want to get the rare stuff and end up buying the albums all over again..... U've got to direct the stuff at either casual listeners "best of" territory or devoted fan's "live and unreleased" ......
that's my 2 cents
btw, i am right that the 2nd disc on FBF added very little?... everyone got it for early frank, right ?

We're not gonna have this discussion again, are we? I listened to the demo disc exactly once, and I'm not even sure I listened to the whole CD. Whereas I listen to the treated disc (and enjoy it) regularly, last time was last week.

i don't know why everyone is assuming that this isn't going to get released by spinart - fb said in the post about the bsides album that "nyc," which i assume he means spinart's offices in nyc, were planning a 6cd boxset, plus a dvd - isn't that pretty much the same thing? i'm sure that it wll be the same release, or a very similar one, on both sides of the pond.

In a perfect world, we would get an all rarities-all live concert Frank Black & the Catholics box, without the albums taking up space in there. I don't think that will happen, though.
In my opinion, here are the benefits of putting the albums in the box (from the record company's POV):
- The box gets taken more seriously in the press. Rereleasing the albums is more of a cause for critical reappraisal than releasing rarities only.
- The audience for this box: 1.) the hardcore fans who will still buy it just for the rarities/packaging (and maybe its "collectable"-ness). 2.) People who got into the Pixies hype last year and who might be interested in Frank's Catholics work if it were given a new push by the label(s) and press. The Catholics albums have probably sold modestly enough that group 2 might well be much larger than group 1.
And, for those who don't want to splurge on a box set as a first purchase, the revived press attention might drive many of the newly "Catholics curious" to buying up some of the individual albums, raising sales of those. Box sets (and greatest hits albums) often have a way of being an indirect promotional tool for a band's entire catalog (why, for example, did a Nirvana Greatest Hits CD come out when Nirvana's album discography is pretty small and easily gathered together? It was to revive attention paid to Nirvana. I bet the whole back catalog got a decent spike in sales because of it.) |

this was the latest from FB on the b-side/rariety compilation box set, so a DVD is probably likely. very good news, hey rita. but this collection slightly differs to what Ten percenter and Cooking Vinyl are saying here in this thread.
NYC HAS BEEN UPBEAT ABOUT DOING A BOXED SET; ALL THE RECORDS, PLUS THESE 2, PLUS SOME OTHER STUFF; MAYBE A DVD WITH CONCERT AND VIDEO STUFF? ANY GOOD BOOTLEG STUFF OUT THERE?

I bought the Pixies DVD nearly a year ago now, and I still haven't opened the box. I also have DVDs of Roxy Music, The Clash, Cypress Hill, David Bowie, Jeff Mills, and Les Wampas, and I haven't seen any of them. And I have CDs by Tricky and the Blues Explosion which came with bonus DVDs, and guess what... yep, still unopened. I'd probably watch a Catholics DVD though, cause hey, they're the Caholics.

Yeah. Ain't it sad? I never took the time to sit down and watch them. Most of them are gifts but I actually paid for the Pixies and Wampas DVDs just to put them on the shelf and leave them there. I'm stupid.

I remember a Catholics show where they played a song by Angst (the band, not "Angst" the song) and it was great. Would love to hear that again.
Also, any alternate takes from their live to two track studio sessions - especially if they were trying out songs in different styles, like that early version of "I'll be Blue". I'm sure there's gotta be some interesting stuff. |
