There was an interview quote from Frank last year about him "having considered" the possibility of a new Pixies album, and that "he'd like" Tom Waits hypothetically to produce it because he "likes the way his records sound."
Sounds like whatever you read chose to interpret that as "Tom Waits is definitely, 100% producing the definitely happening new Pixies album". Tsk, journalists..... |

i read it in the irish mirror the small article said, and i quote "a new pixies album may be on the way this year after a recent string of succesful pixies reunion dates through-out the world..........tom waits is said to be on a list of producers intrested in the project" then there was a long qoute from frank saying how he liked the way tom waits's records sound.

Hasn't Tom himself been quoted as saying there is no truth to any of the rumors that he might produce the Pixies album? Not to mention the fact that, according to Frank, they still don't even have plans to record anything as of yet.

I would love to hear a Waits produced Pixies album. I wasn't aware that Waits was very involved in the production aspect of his albums. Anyone care to elaborate? Nimrod, I remember reading that you were a big Waits fan, and you also always seem to be pretty informed on music. You have any info? On Waits as a producer that is. I suppose I could do my own research, but I'd rather have someone just tell me, of course.

The production on his rawer, more experimental albums would give the theoretical album a great Surfer-Rosa era production sound. Did'nt someone mention before that the title of his 'Bone Machine' album was inspired by The Pixies? |

Tom Waits is very involved in the production and the key to his sound. He's produced (or co-produced with his wife) all of his albums since Swordfishtrombones in 1983 (before that it was Bones Howe). Tom stepping up as producer is the main reason why there's such a drastic change (improvement in my opinion) in his sound after Heartattack and Vine, which was, correct me if I'm wrong, the last album he did not produce.

I think the Tom should produce a rerecording of Surfer Rosa done with Waits' Bone Machine style production: growling, skeleton parades, monster-stomps, etc. They can call it, oh, I don't know, Swordfishstrombonemachine.
