Does anybody else here think that Head On is about doing cocaine? Reread the lyrics and think about it. It obviously helps the interuptation if you've done it before.

you think so? i can't think of too many off the top of my head.. (other than Gouge Away)
hmmmmm.
i heard True Blue is about opium.
what else?
[edit] ok.. Pan Am Highway has another pot reference.. and Hang On To Your Ego is another one (not written by him)..
there are probably a lot more. now you've got me curious
i've always thought Whispering Weeds had something to do with smoking and going on a hike.
lots of drinking songs..

Where is my mind?
You know, when with your feet on the air and...[...] you usually get an altered state of mind, and your head collapses and stuff.

There are two that I know of on Show Me Your Tears. New House of the Pope (Dope) A Horrible Day (stash) So, here he seems to be linking drugs with depression. --oh, and let us not forget the absinthe refrence on This Old Heart Ache...I think that's the song.
How about some Ether? |

"His Kingly Cave" is about taking a tour of Graceland while on hallucinogens. And maybe some pothead might interpret "Smoke Up" as being about weed.
For the most part, Frank doesn't strike me as a real druggy guy, though. |

What to you constitutes a "druggy guy?"

I always thought "I Bleed" from DOOLITTLE, was about shooting-up cocaine. You know, they say that when that immediate high hits you hard, it'll shake your teeth out of your head, plus, you've got the reference to the vampires (your cocaine habit) feeding.
As loud as hell A ringing bell Behind my smile It shakes my teeth And all the while As vampires feed
I bleed (x3)
Not a very pleasant vision, but it does fit the tone and mood of the song. |

This is rock 'n' roll people. Lots of songs (most? all?) are about sex and drugs and booze. And that's one of the reasons we dig it.
I still believe in the excellent joy of the Catholics |

"I'm taking myself to the dirty party of town, where all my troubles can't be found,..." I always thought this was a reference to picking up prostitutes, or otherwise going over to the seedy side of town for a little fun and escape from reality.
In "Weird at My School" Black Francis sings in the first verse about some rich kids it Connecticut(sp?) flying their daddy's plane down to Colombia to pick up cocaine and bringing it back to their boarding school to sell. I remember hearing about this one on the news. It is based on a true story, mid-1980's. The irony, or perhaps what you'd expect, is that these rich, white kids got probation while the poor, black kids were getting sent to prison for a couple of jumbo viles of crack. Go figure! |
