I just saw the movie ("Twelve Monkeys") tonight. Well actually that's a lie, because I remember seeing it as a very gound kid when it had first came out and remebdering a few parts.

I thought it was pretty awesome, I think it's weird how Brad Pitt's character in Twelve Monkeys is almost kind of the same character he plays in the movie adaptation of "Fight Club".

Sometimes I didn't like the style of it, it kind of felt "90's" at moments. But apart from that it had a really kind of dirty and decaing style.

Allot of people talk about how they don't understand the entier story-line, but I thought it made allot of sense.

(Spoilter Ahead) The only thing I didn't get was at the end of the movie when the scientist was in the plane with the other doctor who spreads the virus, does that mean that she will eventually get a hold of that virus and everything will be fine? Or does it just strike more of a "ironic" chord and point refrence to the fact that she is sitting beside him all this time but yet she never notices.

I watched it at my brother's house, I know the DVD had commentary which I really wanted to see (because usualy I'm a movie nerd and I enjo the commetary on movies) so maybe I'll try to borrow the DVD from him.

I've been thinking of ordering a few DVDs from Amazon.ca, it's at toss-up between the two disc wide-screen edition of "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" or another special edition DVD of "Fight Club" or the special edition DVD of "True Romance"

That one I think.

I saw it a week or so again, and yeah I really like it.

yes, but they're not trying to stop it from happening, that would negate the future and they would cease to exist so they wouldn't do that because no one wants to not be, they retrive the virus so that they can make a vaccine for those people in the future, not to stop the deaths in the past. It means everything is going to be ok for them, plus the woman would be way younger on the plane if it were just a coinkindink

Damn - I don't have the benefit of having seen it recently, when I first watched it I know I wasn't the only one who thought so.
One of the people who I watched it with is a doctor in a psychiatric hospital and he said that he'd never seen a more accurate portrayal of schizophrenia on film.

Good point Kitty, they must have sent her back then. Still no saying whether she will be successful in her mission though, so everything is not necessarily going to be OK.

I don't see how it could be all in his head though.

How are they going to retrieve the virus to make a vaccine without changing the future? Is it going to be released, but they take a sample? Why not just use to abundant virus that must be around in the future to make the vaccine (I have seen this movie in many years do they say their trying to make a vaccine)?

I assumed she was going to try to stop the release of the virus and yes that would change the future and maybe not make her exist but during the "time" that we are seeing she does exist. But if that makes her not exist, then would the virus be released and she would exist. But then she would stop the virus ... <head starts spinning>

That was a great movie. The virus spreads for sure. It's already too late by the time they're on the plane (remember the customs agent that sniffs it?). However, they do get the vaccine (and maybe the rest of the virii to slow the spread?) and save the day for humanity down the road.

That's my take on it.

i think they're trapped in this cyclical, self-perpetuating time cycle, doomed to repeat the same fate over and over and over.. that's my take.

there are quite a few references to hitchcock's VERTIGO in the film, which has a similar theme.

one of my favorite films too. i think Terry Gilliam's best.

i fell in love with Madeline Stowe in that film. then she had plastic surgery... so sad. what happened to her?

i actually did a scene from this film when i was in film school, for this one class. the scene where Madeline Stowe finally starts to believe that Bruce Willis' character is actually telling the truth, but he's starting to believe that he's crazy and trying to convince her that he's just crazy..

Time-Travel movies always make me say, "Bullshit!"

It's not that I don't like movies like that - it's just that if they really went back in time and did everything they're shown doing - then the future that's depicted in the beginning of the film couldn't have happened. It's the present in the beginning of the film. The tasks that were done during the time-travel mission (in the present's past) would have already happened, obviously. In the case of 12 Monkeys: He must have failed. Otherwise the "future-present" would NEVER have happened.

In the "present" depicted at the beginning of the film - the virus forced humans to live underground. If he had gone back in time and fixed it then that present wouldn't have been possible. If he really did stop the virus during the time-travel..then the present shown in the beginning would have to be an alternate reality/dimension where that particular outcome happened. Does that mean that instead of just going back in time that he went back to a different present's past?

I hope that made a tiny bit of sense...

yep.
I was lucky to meet Terry Gilliam in 98 and I asked him about the end of 12 monkeys.
He told me it was a "long-term happy ending" (ie: what you just explained)

Yes, the entier time travel thing really pisses me off. Because like, if they go back and change the past for the better then in-turn they wouldn't have had any dimension to have been sent from in the future, therefore their actions would be effectivle "un-done".

Was it just me or did the scientists in the future from Twelve Monkeys remind anyone of the "transilvanians" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show"?

Also another thing that I forgot to mention was how much I like the music in this film, the entier classical violen thing which kind of has a insane twist to it.
