pah.
I agree YHF is not a hugely brillaint album, but i really like some of demo versions of a lot of the songs.
Also, i love the I am trying to break your heart video, brilliant.
Im also in love with Jeff Tweedy.

You're right about Wilco, floop.

[a disembodied voice from out of the shadows]
i'm going to weigh in here. wilco's new record has grown on me quite a bit - i probably like it more than the overly-lauded YHF even. they're (i say they, meaning tweedy, stirrat, kotche, o'rourke, et al. rather than just tweedy - because he's probably the weakest member of the collaboration) making music now which feels comfortable to me now at 33. not challenging. not surprising. just comfortable. they get a lot of press, too much probably. tweedy's not a musical genius by a long shot - i've been a listening a lot to a recording from november of '04 in which JT admits that he often doesn't know what his lyrics mean. he's not receiving these words in visions like kubla khan. "i am amercian aquarium drinker"? his guitar playing (when he ventures beyond strumming the chords) is spirited, but not very accomplished. but the music, the arrangements especially, are very tidy and complex - and satisfyingly rendered in a live setting with the help of axeman nels cline for the '04 tour.
they're overrated, but everything is relative. they're not for everyone - if you're hating all the piano flourishes that jim o'rourke added to their alt-country mix back in 2000, then there's not much i can tell you in consolation. his contribution has been immeasurable and is one of the reasons i am still sticking by them. i realize that even using the label "alt-country" in a post about the current wilco will confound some - but that's where their roots are. some folks probably wish they had stayed true to that label, some are probably glad that they've moved on.
i still listen to uncle tupelo, for fuck's sake, so there's really no saving me.
sorry to ramble here. i always wish i could pull it together with peter radiator-like coherency and clarity of thought - and breadth of knowledge. but, alas -
i remain,
the big galoof
p.s. sorry for the voice of dissent, tony.

Are you unfamiliar with the feeling? Some day you'll acheive it.
Here's my suggestion. Start off small. Pick a band that obviously sucks (say the Eagles) and dump on them for awhile. Then when you have your confidence, move up to harder calls (like Pearl Jam or Radiohead). Next thing you know you'll be snapping off judgments with that feeling of rightfulness. |

I agree with Senor Galoof, Jim O'rourke is the man (to paraphrase). His production work on Ghost is beautifull, and the things he adds to the music itself are also great. I love his solo work, and I'm eagerly anticipating his new album (reportedly done with an orchestra!). One of the things I love about Wilco is the sort of 'comfortable' feel to many of the songs. I'm thinking here of most of Summer Teeth, and songs like 'The Late Greats'. They have an easy sort of appeal, slightly familiar, and very catchy without being annoying. That's just my take. And I think the eperimentation on Ghost works better than on YHF. I love all 10 supposedly 'difficult' minutes of Spiders, and the 11 minutes of feedback is something I always skip, which is big deal because it's a CD. I mean, if this were an LP, I'd be pretty annoyed. I guess the beauty of the digital format is that you can make an 'artistic' statement like that without actually having to subject anyone to it. |

That's Speedy education! Jim O'Rourke, I like his solo work too, haven't listened much, but what I have is very good.

I'm not sure if you're addressing me, but I never said that Spiders was difficult, quite the contrary. It just doesn't go anywhere, but I love it anyway - like I Am Trying To Break Your Heart.
I skip the noise too, though I still find it annoying in that it's interrupted the flow of the album (by making me skip) and that it seems like a sad attempt at being 'artsy'. Just because it can be skipped doesn't mean it's exempt from criticism.
I quite enjoy GIB, and Summer Teeth too. And I agree that YHF is overhyped. Maybe Wilco at large is overhyped. But how, Mr. Floop, does that change the music?
PS Insignificance is a good l'il record, Rita.

I was addressing the critics who have described this as Wilco's "difficult" album. I guess for me, I just find YHF more difficult to get into. That doesn't really make any more or less good, it's just that I listen to Ghost all the time and I rarely listen to YHF. |
