Going to see them on Saturday. Anybody heard of them, I remember them from years ago but not their music. My friend wanted to go see them, so instead of looking up stuff I thought I'd ask you guys about them, as your tastes are impeccable .

Cheers, Barry

I've been trying to get into their latest record. The music is great, but Mark Eitzel's voice is sorta not my tasse de the. There's a stream of their live performance at KCRW here: http://kcrw.com/smil/mb041122American_Music_Club.ram

Thanks for the link Speedy M but my Real Player doesn't work for some reason (I'm not very technically minded and have never got it to work). Could I have some good old fashioned words to discribe how they sound? .

Uh... old fashioned... "golly!"...."gee whiz, guitar!" ... okay, I'm done. I'm not really sure how to describe. Mellow, pleasant, mid-tempo somewhat folky in parts. Kind of a bit like My Morning Jacket, but without the southern influence. That's probably a terrible comparison, I apologze to any AMC or MMJ fans.

i have their "everclear" album (funny story: my cousin ian bought it thinking it was a record by everclear, which it clearly isn't, so gave it to me because i "like weird shit{ie. i don't like everclear or the waitresses}") - i really can't get into it, though i've tried 7 or 8 times. to me, the music just doesn't go anywhere - it is all very similar and nothing is exciting about it - and that doesn't mean that i find all mellow stuff boring, i love mellow stuff, this just has no arc or whatever. anyway, thats the only album i know of theirs.

I used to be a ig fan, even bought Mark Eitzels last solo album, American Music Club are undiscovered gods, a voice like no other, only bob mould comes close to the ache on black sheets of rain. I would recommend you purchase love songs for patriots, the latest album and the magnificent Mercury as they are pretty accessible, of the indie releases, my personal favourites are Engine and Everclear.

Why don’t you learn to tune your damn guitar?”

First bumped into AMC when they released Mercury. I still think Johnny Mathis' Feet is a brilliant song. This made me buy all their earlier stuff, my favorite is California because of Firefly, Western Highway and Blue and Grey Shirt. I suppose the music is relentlessly melancholic which could make it hard to get into if you're not in the mood. Even a song titled Your Jeans Always Were Too Tight ends up to be incredibly sad.
