i used to be really into this album in college and haven't put it on in a looooooooong time. but, just put it on recently and, fucking hell.. even though this is kind of a "throw away" album for her, i think this is her best album. period. even though i like much of her current style, 4-Track Demos shows her at her creative peak, in my opinion (drugged out or not)..

she's plainly said before how she's influenced and inspired by Black Francis. i think this album is her basically trying to be Black Francis when he did his solo shows around 91 and 92 (which she attended). it's all her own too, but you can totally hear the Black Francis influence. (not to mention Iggy)..

anyway, great album. that is all i have to say

and, gratuitous sexy picture of PJ:

Man, that Gibson looks HUGE on her. It looks like it's almost and as tall as her, and has the same waist size.

Yeah, she's absolutely tiny..which is fucking awesome because so am I. Sort of.

I wore out "Dry"..but never got a copy of 4-track demos.

Wanted one.

Tony, Why did you had to remember me that someone stole that album from me? I only have the case now, but what can I do with it if I don't have what was supposed to be inside...

I agree floop. I love 4-track and "Dry", after that it got too smooth for me. She was in her element in the stripped down days, in my humble opinion. Great music to work to full blast at 3 AM in the printmaking lab.

If i remember correctly she put out the 4-track versions because she was not satisfied with the album produced by mr Albini.

Both myself and my wife hammered that album, fantastic and I will try and find it to play now.

Great cd to remind us all about. I completely wore it out when it first released. I'll be digging it out this weekend.

something i wrote during the period is was listening to 'Dry' heavily:

1-20-99

A flock of seagulls. In the middle of a shopping center parking lot.
In the middle of kentucky in the middle of winter.
Some things just don't need an explanation.

I saw some black birds cross low over the highway this morning.
A pattern of imaginary cross hatch as they pass just outside my windshield.

Fruitfly myself inside out.
"Victory"

"Happy and Bleeding"

"Plants and Rags"

The way she says “began” is exquisite as she pulls my face to her black, cold crotch.
I tell her in my weak american way – ‘I would never do that to you.’

My stomach - a burning mass of proof –I smell horrible and I feel like crying and sleeping.
So I do alittle of both.
Smoking would not be good today.
This is all in the brain before caffeine
Driving, faster, faster, the faster I go the more I relax.
Not really. No real relief. No matter how fast.
I think i'm sick today.

I'm pleased to read this. I've struggled to love her latter albums nearly as much as Dry while so many seem to claim each new album as the next PJ Harvey classic. Somehow I've missed out on 4 Track demos but this thread has made me so curious to hear it I'll go look for it tomorrow.

4-track demos is about as stripped down as you can get. it's just her. she plays all the parts. and sings the (insane) background vocals too.

ps. KSR, that picture great.

can you say "wall sized poster"?
