I'm with you 100% here Floop. I feel like I'm the only person on earth not to have read the Da Vinci Code, and not because I don't read, but just because it didn't pique my interest. I also was very disappointed with Amelie, despite its rave reviews. A bunch of my friends went to see A Very Long Engagement, and I had to turn them down, just because of my Amelie disappointment. According to their reviews, I didn't miss much.

I liked Amelie alright.
I hated DaVinci Code. Don't do it man. It's like wandering down to the tar pits to see what all the fuss is about.

'Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain' rocked. In my all-time top 3. + Audrey is the cutest human being since that little russian gymnast. + 'The Da Vinci Code' sucked all the way through. I don't know why I lost my time reading it. Well, to be honest, I know why. = "AAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

I don't picture her as Sophie Neveu, but I guess she's French and as long as her character is completely different than Amelie.
I feel like a lone wolf here though, in that I thoroughly enjoyed The DaVinci Code, Amelie, and this morning's conclusion to Angels & Demons.
The DaVinci Code I think people are disappointed by because of the hype, because they think it's all factual going in, or are expecting some great work of literature. It's not. It's a novel that uses conspiracy theories, a little bit of fact, and a lot of fiction to weave an exciting adventure, the way that Clive Cussler or Robert Ludlum could only dream of doing. It is pop culture to the core, but as pop culture goes, I think it's a sign of improvement over what Dan Brown's contemporaries have been offering for the last 30 years. It's the book equivalent of a band like Modest Mouse who act as a bridge from mainstream media to art and I think it does an admirable job of that. The hype is because a lot of people have never been compelled to read anything with depth to speak of and this book has opened their eyes to a bigger world. If your eyes are open already, you obviously won't experience this. I give the book 10 thumbs up.
Amelie is hilarious and I have developed a crush on Audrey Tautou. I watched it again last weekend as a friend of mine hadn't seen it and it was somehow much funnier the second time (though I loved it the first time, too).

The DaVinci Code was a schmaltzy book and will be a schmaltzy movie. Just consider the director and male lead. One word: mawkish. I feel for Ms. Tatou. Whereas some forum members would like to feel her, period.

The Davinci code will probably make a decent mainstream blockbuster. I read the book. It was okay for what it was. I don't much care for fiction in general. I wouldn't read anymore of his books. |

i'm not saying i wouldn't have intercourse with her. i just thought her acting bugged in AMELIE (classicly overrated film).. i hated the whole looking at the camera thing. it worked in FERRIS BEULERS DAY OFF and other films.. in this is just annoyed me.
as much as i respect the filmmakers, and love DELICATESSEN, i am hard pressed to see a film titled "A VERY LONG ENGAGEMENT"..
could they have thought of a worse title?
maybe "THIS MOVIE WILL BE LOOOOOOOONNNNG AND BOOOOOOORRRRING"

The French title is "Un Long Dimanche de Fiançailles", how do you translate that, let's say "A Long Engagement Sunday"? That sounds weird. Anyway.
I haven't seen Amelie. I haven't seen A Very Long Engagement either. I haven't read Da Vinci Code. I don't like Audrey Tautou even though I haven't seen any of her movies. Oh yeah, I saw L'Auberge Espagnole which sucked.

heh.
you have a point, but RABBIT PROOF FENCE, while having a bad title.. didn't have a horrible trailer, and doesn't have bad reviews.

Yeah, bad trailer is enough for me. People REALLY have to rave about it to make me see a movie with a bad trailer. In my opinion, if you can't even cut together a good 30 sec - 1 min segment about your movie, how good could the movie be. Reviews I tend to largely ignore unless it seems unanimous across the board. But when they print "Person X said 'Generic praise!'" on the box, it's ignored. There's always someone (Joel Siegel) that'll praise anything. A bad title is similar to a bad trailer, except it says more about the writer to me than the movie.
I don't think I'd go see A Very Long Sunday Engagement either.

Well, once again the Sir was mistaken. Floop, when you said "as much as i respect the filmmakers, and love DELICATESSEN, i am hard pressed to see a film titled A VERY LONG ENGAGEMENT..", I took it to mean that you couldn't find any such film on the internet with that title. That would explain my posting the trailer. My bad.
While on the subject of poor looking trailers, both of Tim Burton's new films look pretty crummy from the trailers alone. Corpse Bride was just released a few days ago and looks pretty disappointing, and then there is the Willy Wonka trailer, which just looked peiced together; not very well done. And its not like I'm not a Burton fan. On the strength of these trailers alone, these films look shoddy at best.
I will never say the word procrastinate again, I'll never see myself in the mirror with my eyes closed. |

i love Tim Burton, but moreso for his smaller films. i'll go see anything he makes, but i can already predict what CHARLIE is going to be like.. it'll have amazing visuals, and probably some funny moments.. but ultimately it will not, and could not, compare to the original.

ps. "smell ya later" is a serious burn! that's always a good way to get the last word in on an argument. because once you say "smell ya later" it's pretty much over after that. the other person left with no choice but to endure the searing humiliation

Oh yes, Sir Rock can consider himself severly burned. And that conversation is SO over. After a brief frlitation with "forum pal" status in the glorious Arcade Fire thread, where we exchanged great AF related links and generaly KRCW gushery, he pulls this Tim Burton crap. Don't be dissin' on Timbo. Cause then you get seared.
And I have to agree, I think his version will be great, but can anything be better? I mean, who ever heard of a snozzberry? |

Oh Speedy M, how you get the blood flowing. "Smell you later forever"? Soooo Ralph Wiggum.
Anyway, I too am a big Burton fan, but I'm just tired of seeing the same thing. Willy Wonka, one of my all time favorites, is a classic piece of cinema not to be tampered with. I guess if Tim takes it in a different direction, it could be accepted. It wouldn't be difficult either, mostly because the original deviates so much from the Dahl work that the two can be considered completely different works. What I would have preferred to have seen would have been a Burton interpretation of The Great Glass Elevator (although I think I read somewhere, perhaps imdb?, that Dahl wouldn't allow the rights of the book to be sold because of his discontent with the first film). I agree with Floop, the movie will be aesthetically stunning, as is all Burton work, and I look forward to an Elfman score, but c'mon, don't screw with the classics.
Corpse Bride just looks like a re-hashed Nightmare Before Christmas, if you ask me. I really haven't looked too much into the film, so I'm just basing that statement on the trailer alone. Granted, I'm sure I'll catch it, but as of now I look at it with a bit of disdain.
Anyway, alls I'm saying is that the two had crappy looking trailers, or at least that’s what I think.

burton has been washed up since ed wood
but big fish was a sweet little film - charlie will suck
and i love amelie and i think the da vinci code was made to do one thing: fly by. and because it is flying by, you are tricked into thinking it is exciting and good. when it is just going quickly. i didn't hate it, but didn't love it

AMELIE was so friggin' "cute" that I couldn't stand it for more than a half hour or so. I had to shut it off.
I don't know how it ends, but I hope it ends with Amelie dying a brutal, agonizing death. |
