The best movie I've seen recently (on DVD) is

I´d love to read the screenplay of Eraserhead, it´d be random like "HENRY sits by his window. Somewhere a man is pulling levers."

I saw Man On Fire last night. It had Christopher Walken in it, of course it was good.

Saw 1984 at a mate's house last night. Having not read the book, it was a little confusing at first, although I knew the basic dystopian-future premise. Very bleak throughout, the mirror opposite of a feel-good Hollywood movie. Great performances, John Hurt is perfect (he's just the quintessential off-beat English misfit, he often reminds me of Thom Yorke!) and Richard Burton deserved the acclaim he got for what was his last movie. Suzanna Hamilton is very good too (and very fanciable!). It's funny, Cyril Cusack appears in this and the similarly-themed Fahrenheit 415, which got me thinking, surely Bradbury was influenced by Orwell?! Also features Gregor Fisher (Rab C. Nesbitt!) and Roger Lloyd-Pack (Trigger in Only Fools And Horses) as a waiter, and David Cann (Brass Eye, Jam) as O' Brien's butler, Martin!! According to IMDB, Richard Branson (Virgin Films financed the movie) had The Eurythmics do some music for the film (he wanted David Bowie, but he asked for too much money!) and some of there music was put on the soundtrack, unbeknownst to director Michael Radford. In retaliation, he withdrew the picture from BAFTA consideration for Best Picture, and when he won the Evening Standard Best Film Of The Year award, he denounced The Eurythmics involvement in his televised acceptance speech. Annie Lennox has a cameo in the film.

I saw that recently, too. Great stuff.
Newo, I watched 1984 at a friends house, he wanted to see it after finishing the book (he's just finished Animal Farm, too), which he recommended. According to him, the film follows the book very closely.
Watched Clockwise earlier (it was free with the News Of The World, which I would never normally buy, but I just thought I wouldn't checking the film out again). I saw it years ago with my parents in the cinema. Saw a tiny bit of it on TV again a while ago, but I couldn't remember if it was any way decent and I thought it might be a mildly entertaining caper. Sadly, it's a crock of shit. It's dated pretty badly (lots of mulleted schoolchildren), with a poor, clumsy script. John Cleese just wheels out his usual manic performance. And the music is ingratiatingly bad. It should have been called Carry On Cleese. It'd be rather quaint if it wasn't so bloody awful. By the way, checked it up on IMDB, and apparently the director Christopher Morahan did a 1965 TV version of 1984.

Revisited John Waters POLYESTER yesterday. What a hilarious movie! It's impossible to even classify the comedy it's so ridiculously audacious.
"He's here, Francine. At first I thought he was out walking his dog...then I realized it was his date."

This is one of those movies that really changed the way I look at the art of film (and comedy for that matter). I think I was 16, I couldn't believe it.

As a late friend said about fifteen years ago, it's sad to think that from now on there will always be Murder She Wrote reruns running somewhere on this planet. |

"The Strange Love of Martha Ivers" (1946) - Barbara Stanwyck, Kirk Douglas, Van Heflin. - "Gripping melodrama", the man says. Douglas's film debut as despicable nerd. Good movie with unfortunate title IMO. |

Watched a a kind of horror-thriller called Christina's House last night, at a friend's. Utter crap. John Savage from The Deer Hunter was in it, and a guy from Final Destination. And Michael Buble's sister!! One of the characters was supposed to be like Brad Pitt in Fight Club. Woeful.
Watched Animal Farm on C4 this morning. I'm sure I've seen it before a few times as a kid. There are silly cartoon animal moments, but it is an interesting watch. According to IMDB:
"The CIA obtained the film rights to "Animal Farm" from Orwell's widow, Sonia, after his death and covertly funded the production as anti-Communist propaganda. Some sources assert that the ending of the story was altered by the CIA (in the book, the pigs and humans join forces) to press home their message, but it is equally possible that the more upbeat ending of the movie was an artistic decision, to give the film more audience appeal."
I'd heard something about this before.

That was crap. In fact, even the effects were crap, not anywhere near as good as the first. Part III is better, the effects are great in that, too.

Spielberg shouldn't do sequels. Remember Temple Of Doom?! It was probably enjoyable as a child, but I'm sure it'd be sucky watching it now, despite a couple of cool scenes.

i think what they were trying to do was connect the idea of "gambling" with the company stock to "gambling" in a casino. the casino games are a visual metaphor for gambling.

Has anybody seen Cache, the French film starring Juliette Binoche and Daniel Auteuil? I'd love to know what the scary scene is about but am too chickenshit to view it.
Thanks!

I saw it a few weeks ago, Kathryn (My little review is on the previous page). I don't want to give it away, but there is a sudden, shock moment in the film.

I was meant to go see it a week or two ago but was too hungover to leave the house. Euro News gave it great reviews!! Has anyone seen an English film with Daniel Auteuil as a private detective who discovers a paedophile ring?
Shit animation, incoherent inexplicable storylines, but for some reason I love it(geek).
