I saw "Zombie Holocaust," which was really cheesy.
I really liked "Cecil B. Demented," although I think I can understand Newo's complaint about the main character. I'd definitely recommend seeing other Waters films.
Isn't Laputa one of the kingdoms from "Gulliver's Travels"?

Yesterday I saw French mystery/thriller/drama Hidden (Cache) with my Dad and Sister (my Dad kindly offered to pay for my ticket, so I came along!). It's quite an intriguing little movie, concerning the host of a literary discussion TV show and his family getting send mysterious video recordings (mainly of their house from across the street) wrapped up in bizarre drawings. It keeps you guessing all the way through. There's a shock moment that got a gasp from the audience, and another that made me jump a bit! It ends very suddenly though, leaving things very much open to interpretation. Okay, so it's better than Hollywood endings that wrap everything up in a neat bundle, but this one is a little too vague! I came up with a theory as to the culprit during the end credits, but I'm probably totally wrong! Very well acted, and I think this is the only film I've seen the beautiful Juliette Binoche (the French Julia Roberts?) in. There's one scene that shows the occupation of Iraq on the TV, in which I thought the director was trying to contrast the problems of the greater world with the personal horror the family are going through. By the way, checking the movie out on IMDB, somebody has posted a review which criticises the subtitles for being hard to read (white on white), which is true. It's definitely worth a watch, in fact I'd like to see it again just to try to work out what was really going on!!
Also watched Downfall again later, excellent film, Bruno Ganz portrayal of Hitler is brilliant. |

I was surprized to find that he'd directed The Piano Teacher. He also did a film called Funny Games, which sounds familiar.

We are so fortunate that Hollywood went overkill on Westerns for so long. Such a rich zeitgeist for all things human. |

IF I SHOULD FALL FROM GRACE - I just happened across this documentary profile of Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan on IFC the other night it's actually pretty good. It's a bit bewildering that the guy is still alive given his apparent physical state (he doesn't walk so much as lumber along like some congealed mass with a fag in one hand and a bottle in the other at all times). But what's even more strange is how accepting his family and long time girlfriend are of his constant inebriation, basically saying that it's just a part of who he is. Mostly it centers on his time with the Pogues and there's some really great footage of their numerous television and concert appearances from the mid 80's. I never knew the tin whistle players' other instrument was banging a beer tray on his head....yes, brilliant I know! Anyway, it's worth a view if just to hear his crazy hiss-like chuckle, and pickled and dependant as the guy may be, it's hard to deny that he's a damn fine lyricist. |

I watched Three Colours Red last night. Now that's more like it after the dissapointment of Three Colours White. The best of the trilogy by far I thought.

I saw the BBC miniseries of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" on Wednesday. Well, most of it. The disc that Netflix sent me was scratched, so parts of the first two episodes wouldn't play properly. I liked it overall, despite its obvious cheapness. Trillian was totally miscast, though, and last year's film did a much better job with Marvin.

Good, but nothing too exciting, minus the score (Eliott Smith/Polyphonic Spree)

2nd film i've watched this week w/ a Polhphonic Spree song heavily featured. Very well made. I've been on a good movie streak lately (knock on wood...)

COBRA VERDE - not one of Herzog's best
The book it is based on, The Viceroy Of Ouidah, is wonderful.

Dodsworth (1936) - starring Walter Huston & Mary Aston. Second time I'd seen it it; simply classic. |

Yeah, looks a bit dodgy!
I just watched... (The Kay edit), it's pretty good. It's about somebody called Kay who's an editor. Four out of five stars.

I watched the croupier last night, I'd never seen it before. Clive Owen was too skinny in this film. |

I watched Dirty Harry t'other night, I liked that. That's all I can think of at the moment. Don't ask me what I've watched, I'm pretty disorganised.

I watched the whole of Curb Your Enthusiasm series one - pretty good, definitely grew on me. Dogma, again - work of genius that And just seen an uncensored promo for Basic Instinct 2. Probably going to be crap (I had to listen to it without sound) but looks great. Sharon Stone is a remarkably objectifiable woman.

In a word no.
I thought it was dull as dishwater and there are far too many other films out there that deserve my full attention rather than one that feels like a work to get through.
Though I have no doubt that I'll get flamed for this.

Good to hear that "Curb Your Enthusiasm" is a grower. I just watched the first two episodes and am not sure whether I like it or not... It has it's moments, but Larry makes it hard to feel for him. |
