I just ordered an iBook which I am supposed to get today and I am VERY excited. I haven't been a Mac user in a long time, so is there anything I should know? Any Apple tips anyone wants to give me?
I can't wait! Wheeeee!
(and I can't stop exclaiming. Sorry.)

I got an iMac G5 about a month ago and love it. Didn't require too much transition for me because I was coming from a six year old iMac. OS X is not that much different from OS 9. If anything it's better. At work I continue within the limitations of Windows. So it's reptile at work, mammal at home. |

I'm long time Mac user. Back to 128K Mac.
A few tips: try Safari and Mail, they're good browsers and mail programs respectively
experiment with the dock (location, size, what programs on the dock, whether it disappears when not used), it's really useful once you're comfortable with it
learn how to force quit (I think it's control, apple, esc), you don't need it often but sometimes it's critical
I think the biggest change for me from OS 9 to X was that the Finder was gone, it took time for me to get use to how to navigate between programs and folders, but it's not that hard to learn
good luck, I love getting a new computer |

Congrats ramona! I too have been a longtime mac user since I guess 97. Haven't used an imac or ibook though. If you run into any problems there are tons of help forums out there. I had some problems getting used to OS X after 9, but since you''re starting out fresh it shouldn't be an issue.
The force quit is option-apple-esc. For some reason I've had to use it a lot lately with the newest version of Firefox. Usually involving Flash websites or javascript issues. Probably will be fixed in the newer version. I tend to prefer it over Safari even now.
Oh, and iTunes is cool, but sometimes it can be a right bitch. Watch out. ;)

And I'm psyched for you - they are a sheer pleasure to use - pc's just annoy the hell out of me now. Once you've got your way around OSX you'll love it. The only thing I can recommend for now is moving your dock to either the left or right hand side of your screen otherwise you'll find yourself accidently launching all sorts of programmes if you are anything like me. |

Hmm, I like my dock at the bottom vs left or right. I wonder what that says about me. heheh
On that note, have any of you figured a way to make the dock items open with a double click vs. one? I have my dock set to "tiny as hell" to fit a bunch of stuff in there, and I accidentally open apps more than I'd care to admit. ;)
Still better than Windows.

Aha! hence the left/right thing for me - mine is tiny too but have found that's the only place for it to avoid the opening everything at once problem. |

Haven't had the everything at once thing, thank god. You know what bugs me though? Sometimes the Finder is a real pain in the ass. Selecting and moving groups of items up and down a long list, and then it auto-opens on some folder you landed on when it gets stuck. Cripes! That really bugs me.
I'm sorry ramona, I don't mean to tell you only horror stories, but I figure it's best to be forewarned. All in all it's still a very short and minor list of greivances. :)

I use to get a little frustrated without a mouse, that little black arrow use to have a mind of it's own, never going where I wanted. Keep your book on a flat surface as much as possible or it will run rings around you. Or, use a mouse. Makes things that bit quicker.
iBook dock to the left, G5 to the bottom for me. |

Since this is Mac tip thread can I throw out a problem I often have? Sometimes when I'm using up too much memory (Project Builder, Mail, Safari, ect.) the next time I open programs their preferences will be gone. For example, I'll have to re-enter my mail settings or turn tab browsing back on in Safari. Anyone else have similar problems? I've thought of buying more RAM (I think I only have 256) and wonder if that would solve my problem. |

darwin - Never had that problem. Of course I am acqainted with the "not enough memory" difficulty but not the loss of preferences or settings. I have had my old iMac close open desktop windows on me after warning about low memory. But now I have 1 GB of RAM! |

Yeah I think you hit the nail on the head that you need more RAM darwin. I've got 1.12 GB and sometimes it's almost not enough (only when I'm running lots of apps incl. graphics programs).
Do you back up your preferences? That might be useful for some things, though I guess for most it might be overkill.

Backup preferences? You mean save my preference folder and then paste it back in when I need to?
I'll try to more RAM. Thanks. |

Yeah that. I thought maybe some of your apps might have some extensive preference settings that would be a pain in the butt to have to redo every time, that's all. I'm sorry if I was stating the obvious. :)

I am home writing to you all on the lovely iBook. It's SO FUCKING BEAUTIFUL. I could lick it! But I won't. I am starving but I don't want to go out and leave my purty baby here alone. I am doomed!

No, it wasn't obvious. I haven't done that and it would save me time if it works. |

Here's a stupid question: on a PC I would right click on my mouse to save an image from the Internet, but how do I do it on my Mac?

To save an image you can also hit cmd-S, which will open a save dialog box. If your screen shows just the image you want in the upper left of the screen, then the save dialog box will allow you to save just the image to whatever folder you select. However, if your screen shows a full webpage, hitting cmd-S will open the same dialog box to save the entire page, which I assume will usually not be what you intend. When I want to save just one image from a full page, I click on the image, hold down on the mouse, and a menu drops from the point of the click . Don't know how that last bit works on an iBook. I try to use keystroke commands whenever possible because the mouse wears on my wrists, plus I find the keystroke commands faster for me. |

I've heard that Macs are better than PCs, but they're also more expensive, and I just don't have that kind of money to spend on a computer.

What are the advantages? I know people who rave about them but won't specify why they are so great. I've used a PC from day dot and it seems ok to me...

I think the Mac operating systems have always been smoother. Windows is jerky and has more trouble with initiation of tasks, softwares, installations, and, well, most things. It has gotten significantly better over the last few years of course, and the Mac is hardly perfect. The Mac does a great job of recognizing file types and taking the initiative with them. At work the systems administrator constantly has to attend to the Wintel PCs but at home I get by almost indefinitely by troubleshooting for myself. There's also the matter of the desktop design, which Windows of course emulates, but the Mac feels more elegantly functional to me.
Not to be cruel, but whereas Apple was able to get a foothold after DOS/Microsoft had already established its market and cultural dominance, had Apple come first there never would have been any PCs and most likely no Microsoft. |

Here's another question for all you Mac users. Does anyone have the install disc for Microsoft Word that I could possibly borrow?? I would send it right back if someone could send it to me, I just don't have $200 to spend on Word right now - especially since I just got fired. Life is full of surprises!

Hey ramona...glad to hear you dig your iBook! macs rock...be sure to post any questions you have here or check apple's forums...the folks over there are VERY helpful and usually very quick to answer your questions.
if you hang around any college kids with macs, sometimes they get microsoft CDs from their university's IT dept...you may be able to bribe them with FB anecdotes.
not that I would condone that or anything. ;)
good luck and welcome back to the ranks of the highly intelligent folks who use macs! :)
[edit]...also, if you want to download an image from the net, you can just click-n-drag it to your desktop...that works too! |
