<<Didn't he also direct the one for "Hang On To Your Ego"?

I'm not sure, but I've never seen it, and I goddamn want to.

<<It's off the topic, but I really want to see Frank's videos in full-screen format (i.e., not just on a computer screen).<<

VH1 Classics has played "Los Angeles" a few times... I also have it on a tape somewhere (a tape compilation of TMBG TV appearances)

Holy moly! I can't believe there's another Frank Black song out there (ahhh, two Frank Black songs!) that I didn't even know existed until now, but I just looked up this album and found out he does covers of Alexander's "Old John Amos" and "Go Home Girl"; I don't know which one Flansy sings on, though.

But...wow. If anyone has those, I'd kill for copies: apesyx@gmail.com

If it wasn't mentioned Flansy's side project Mono Puff covered Oddball on one of their singles.

I think the first time Frank sang "Particle Man" was at a radio festival. From my understanding of it, Linnell got sick and Frank, Flans and the rest of TMBG(including a couple of guys who were in Frank's band as well, I think(Tony Maimone?)) performed as "They Might Be Frank". I have heard the "Particle Man" recording, but nothing else from that show. I would do most anything for that bootleg.

If I absolutely had to, I could survive on eponymous 1st album and Lincoln ("Then" is even better, of course). They are my two favorites, Bar None. Hahahahahah. Really though.

TMBG is so damn prolific, I doubt any full-time job having, non-crazy guy could ever hope to keep track of EVERYTHING they have done, and do do. Especially if one were to add in the solo and Mono Puff type stuff as well. I also totally love Flood. I think the first three full length ones being my faves has to do with when I was introduced to them. I am less fond of other stuff, but will probably never lose respect for their music, or truly dislike any album.

I can totally understand someone being annoyed by Linnell's voice. It is absolutely endearing to me, but it is indeed extremely nasal and drawlful. Listen to "Lie Still, Little Bottle" for a nice sample of Flansy's voice.

Frank should do something from the first record, like "The Day" or "Rhythm Section Want Ad". An obvious choice would be something like "You'll Miss Me" from Lincoln, since it would work fine with FB being duplicated measure-for-measure. Frank should, indeed, do something from the first record, but my prediction is that he'll do "Santa's Beard" also from Lincoln (I think).

Thank you for the help that I like it.

I really could hear Frank doing "Nothing's Gonna Change My Clothes"... I REALLY could.

"The Day" WOULD work pretty well..but so short. More.

He could do a creepy(er) "Hide Away Folk Family" ?

I guess those are the main songs on the first album I could see him doing...

OH, and I HAVE kept track of every single TMBG song, releases and unreleased, rare and not rare...I've been tracking them since 96... it is possible. Why I can even sing you the words to "Bread Hair", or hum the instrumental "Triboro", or sing John Linnell's "House of Mayors"...or the alternate demo version of "Birdhouse In Your Soul" (totally different lyrics!, or "Purple Toupe" ("Now I'm flying planes, I'm a big important man" what??!?!") etc etc etc... I KNOW ALL.

eek.

Oh and is it awful to say I prefer Mono Puffs version of Oddball? The guitar solo is just so much more melodic and more...organized... like they actually worked out a hummable specific guitar solo, which I prefer to just kind of rocking around and noodling (which I DO like also!!)... I'm very impressed by it.

Also the way it ends with flans saying "Mr. Frank Black" just works so perfectly with the song, I'm always surprised when Frank DOESN'T say it on his version

when i saw Frank open for TMBG in San Francisco (around 94 i think), he came out and joined them for "Spy".. just playing guitar, free form style. like, soloing..

i also remember during TMBG's set, when they were playing "The Statue Got Me High" he was on the side singing along with them, really into it.

i agree with broken face. "Mammel" would be cool. "Palindrome" would be cool too. lots would be cool really.

"Ana Ng" ?

I have the demo "Birdhouse" in really poor quality on a who-knows-what-generation cassette tape. I wouldn't be surprised if someone had made an MP3 of it, though.

Well, it IS Lyle playing guitar on both versions, isn't it?

There was a little bit of a video for Mammal, on the Apollo 18 video promo presskit, made by John and John (and other people). They scroll through the songs on Apollo 18, with animated/claymation videos for some of them. They have about 15 seconds of Mammal with little claymation animals standing around wiggling their heads (its very cheap claymation)

Hello all,

My name's David, and this TMBG tribute has been a labor of love for me for the past few months. As thigs have been progressing, the scope and details of the album have changed. But, allow me to tell you what I know....

Here's an update- So far, i've recieved 6 of the tracks to be included on this tribute.

Self- "Ana Ng"

The Hotel Lights (Darren Jessee of Ben Folds Five)- "The End Of The Tour"

Charles Douglas- "She's An Angel" (Joey Santiago played on Charles' latest record- it's really good)

This Radiant Boy- "Don't Let's Start"

Steve Burns- "Dead"

Brett Kull (of Echolyn)- "Another First Kiss"

Things are shaping up to sound really good. Soon, the album will be finished and we've begun discussion with a large distributor. The remaining contributions include...

Frank Black- "TBA" (i know, i know, you were hoping to find out what song- but even I don't know quite yet)

Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players- "Doctor Worm"

The Wrens- "Birdhouse In Your Soul"

Recepter- "Boat Of Car"

..and myself- "Narrow Your Eyes"

I'll post again when I've got more info.

-David

Frank Black? Self? Steve Burns? Trachtenburg Family? The Wrens?

Performing TMBG songs?

This is already the best tribute album of all time.

Mr. Miller, I tip my hat to you.

This is incredible news! For years, I've fantasized about hearing Frank do a cover of Alienation's for the Rich. If we're assuming it'd be a Flood track, though, I agree with whoever suggested Lucky Ball & Chain. I doubt it will be something like Letterbox or Sapphire Bullets...

Nothing is ever something.

Is there any word yet on which song Mr. Black is covering for this CD? The suspense is killing me!
I've been keeping track of all the message boards that mention this tribute, in hopes of finding out as much as possible. I hope this CD turns out to be as good as i think it will! Self is one of my favs.

I guess I could see him trying on "Road Movie To Berlin" in Honeycomb style, in the case of a Flood track. But I would be disappointed with that I think.

The tribute album now has a MySpace page. There's a sample of the various songs that are on there, but I haven't been able to listen to it yet.

I know, i know... this has been a long time coming, but here are the details.

Yes- the street date is set for July 11th. But, what's really exciting is that Bar/None Records is the distribution label. It seems fitting since they were responable for TMBG's first 3 albums. Ultimately, their involvement means getting the album out into stores, on iTunes, etc.

Here's the FINAL tracklist:

sElf- ana ng
The Long Winters- pet name
David Miller- narrow your eyes
Charles Douglas- she's an angel
FRANK BLACK- road movie to berlin
The Wrens- they'll need a crane
Steve Burns- dead
OK Go- letterbox
Recepter- boat of car
This Radiant Boy- don't let's start
Jason Trachtenburg- doctor worm
Fluid Ounces- it's not my birthday
Brett Kull- another first kiss
Hotel Lights- the end of the tour

Frank's version of Road Movie is nothing short of kickass. It's live, it's strong, and really really serves the song well.
