Here's an article where Frank gets a bit pissy and a bit sarcastic. Funny line in here about Pixies doing Google searches. Gotta be the only band in the world that once broke up by fax, and might be communicating by Google searches right now.

Frank Black Just Wants To Be Asked The Right Question
Friday August 18, 2006 @ 06:00 PM
By: ChartAttack.com Staff

Frank Black has a bone to pick with U.K. publication Uncut. The legend was understandably a little confused when he picked up the latest issue of the classic rock magazine, which featured an interview with him talking about recent developments in his solo career and his time with the reunited Pixies.

"They had the nerve to put the questions in the article as if they were verbatim, you know, like a Q&A," he fumes. "I recognized all the answers as my own answers, but when I saw the printed article, I did not recognize, in at least one instance, the question. They added stuff to the question.

"The guy asked me some question about some sort of tension between me and Kim [Deal] in the old days. And I responded very politely and friendly-like. And there was the answer, but then at the beginning of the question, he stuck in, 'You and Kim had a romantic relationship back in the old days.' I would have remembered if he'd asked me that question. I think it would have stood out.

"But you know what? The motherfucker didn't have the balls to just ask me the question. If he'd just asked me, I was in a pretty good mood that day and I liked the guy, I might have just opened up to him like Marlon Brando to Truman Capote. I might have given him a real answer. He might have had a motherfucking scoop. But instead he asked me some boring, neutral, homogenized question and I answered the best I could. And now, he'll never fucking know."

Aside from a personal vendetta or two, things are still pretty great for Black two-and-a-half years after his seminal group reformed. He just released a double-disc solo album, Fastman/Raiderman, which follows in the same footsteps as its Honeycomb predecessor.

The double-LP was recorded during and in between Pixies tours, and now Black is finally heading out on the road with some of the session players involved with both Fastman/Raiderman and Honeycomb. They'll have a lot of draw from. The former alone has 27 tracks, which is no small number, especially considering that the latter has 14.

"I wouldn't feel the need to release it all at the same time except that the music business being what it is, record companies don't like releasing records in close succession to each other," says Black, who released music at breakneck speed when he recorded with The Catholics.

"There was a time when they did that, back in the '50s and '60s. You release a record and then three months later you'd release another one. That's the way I would do it. It makes sense to me from an artistic point of view. But anyway, the business doesn't like that. So this was a compromise. Put 'em all out, double-disc."

Before Black embarks on a fall tour with a three-piece backing band, he's on the road with the Foo Fighters, playing solo before Dave Grohl's band play an acoustic set. The circumstances surrounding Black's involvement on the high-profile dates probably aren't too exciting, but the artist, always the wit, has one slightly sarcastic explanation.

"Well, we had a long talk about it in the men's sauna at the health club that we both belong to," he begins straight-faced. "I was giving him a little shoulder massage, purely platonic.

"And he said, 'You know what, Frank? Fuck it, man. Let's do a fuckin' tour together.' And I said, 'Really, Dave? Well, if that's what you want.' And he said, 'Fuckin' eh, that's what I want.' And I said, 'OK, I'm gonna go start practising now.' And then he slapped me on the butt on my way out of the sauna. That's how we do things in Hollywood."

The other big question in Black's life these days is whether or not The Pixies, who are showing no signs of slowing down on the touring side, will go back to the studio. Black has indicated in recent months that it's unlikely, but he's also holding out hope that it could still come to pass.

"I could go into the studio tonight and make a record with somebody," he professes. "It's not about writing songs. It's about willingness of the parties to come together to make history, to make rock history.

"The songs write themselves. The more magical and inspired the context, the easier they flow. If you're in a good space or you're inspired, you can't get to sleep when you go home or back to the hotel. You go back and write more songs. The people -- hypothetically, whoever they may be, people who, for example, might have been in a band, then broke up, then got back together and played a few shows, made a few bucks, people like that — they have to be willing to be a vital, creative force again. So that's really the issue.

"So your question should not be directed at me, even though I'm doing the interview. In a perfect world, you could go talk to them. Let's get to the bottom of this. I'm communicating to them right now through a journalist based in another country, hoping that this article will show up in one of their Google searches and they'll see it."

If a typical studio record doesn't surface, that doesn't mean that the band won't do anymore recording. In fact, they may be on the verge of embarking on something entirely different and unique.

"I think we're gonna get involved in a film instead — doing the soundtrack and being bad actors," says Black, insisting he's completely serious. "It'll probably be a horror movie because we want to be able to showcase our bad acting. We want to be in a movie where the bad acting is appropriate.

"We've discussed it at length. We're trying to find a good writer/director dude who can help us pull this off. Maybe a Canadian. Maybe one of those Kids In The Hall guys. Bruce McCulloch would be awesome. I idolize Bruce McCulloch."

Canadians will have plenty of chances to see Black live. Here are his dates:

August 23 Toronto, ON @ Hummingbird Centre (solo w/Foo Fighters)
October 25 Montreal, QC @ Le National Music Hall
October 26 Toronto, ON @ Opera House
November 5 Winnipeg, MB @ Pantages Playhouse Theatre
November 6 Regina, SK @ Conexus Arts Centre
November 7 Saskatoon, SK @ Odeon Event Centre
November 9 Edmonton, AB @ Edmonton Events Centre
November 10 Calgary, AB @ MacEwan Hall
November 12 Vancouver, BC @ Commodore Ballroom

Yeah, I was surprized that he didn't seem to question the 'relationship with Kim Deal' comment in that interview!

Q. How did you get involved with the Foo Fighters?

I was just about to give a slightly sarcastic made-up story about how I ran into
Dave Grohl in the sauna, but his agent just called my agent and asked, "Hey, do
you want to play some shows?"

"I think what we ought to do is make a film," he says, only half-joking. "That would give us the opportunity to be bad actors, because as you know, musicians make truly horrible actors. But we could make a soundtrack album, and that would take the focus off of, 'Ooh, what are we going to do for our big comeback?' That would take the pressure off, and you never know, it could be a great record."

You were romantically involved with Kim. How would you describe your relationship with Kim, in 1991, when you were breaking up, and now?
Andy Murrell, Liverpool

It 1991, we found it hard to even look at each other, let alone speak. Now, if we're on tour together, we hang out, we hug. I can't say, though, that in 1991 our relationship had become full of rage, or hateful anger, or we were ready to lash out. It was this stalemate. A standstill. Now it's... less like that! We have good conversations, I suppose. But I have a headstrong personality, and she's very immovable, sometimes. I think now, we disagree on things, but we don't really care. Whereas before, if probably drove the other person crazy!

I love Bruce. Gavin and Cabbage Head. I dunno if he's the best writer/director comedy guy to nab, but Frank indeed appears stuck on the jokesters who "came from the North." They could do something called Pith (Pixies in the Hall). Ha ha! I am so unfunny. Sorry about being so unfunny smornin.

Also, I like when Frank says "a mutherfucking scoop." Remember when we were comparing Frank to Brando?
