I hope you get Interpol eventually. I am just getting into Sleater-kinney quite a lot now.
Good to see you agree with me on your first two though.

I guess it would have to be just that I haven't given them a fair chance. I sometimes will get an album, listen to the first three songs, and if they don't grab me immediately, drop it for something else. This is generally the case when I buy a bunch of CDs at once. When I got The Velvet Undergroud And Nico, I really only listened to it with half interst once, and gave up on it. I suppose I didn't give it the time it deserved. Perhaps tomorrow morning on the bus to school, I'll give it a spin.

I have to second the Velvet Underground, for the exact same reasons as Sir Rockabye.

Haven´t heard any of Yo La Tengo´s records except for the Nuclear War´s A Motherfucker one but saw them at a festival in Ireland with an audience of about ten in the tent and it was wonderful.
As for VU, I like Waiting For My Man. --

Sir Rock
At the risk of making you feel that the moms on the forum are shaking their collective index finger at you and tut-tut-ting...
XTC? XTC?
I can understand Gang Of Four having been a moment in time (I think you would have liked them in the 80s, they fit in well with the whole vibe then) but XTC have an intelligence and quirkiness that I believe you might enjoy.
As I tell my kid re: eating her vegetables, "Keep trying them, you might like them eventually"

on the topic of XTC: go out and steal "The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead" from the album "Nonsuch" somewhere.
Its guitar pop, man. They use major chords and catchy melodies. This happened occaisionally in the 80's and 90's much to the chagrin of the majors. |

But Mooo-oooom, I don't wanna!
Well, I provide the same reason for putting XTC on the list that I put VU. Not enough of an effort on my part. Perhaps those two were not deserved of the title "Bands I wanted to like but just coudn't", and would be more at home under "Bands I wanted to like, but got to lazy to listen to". The only XTC I own is Skylarking. Was that a bad place to start?

I just got Captain Beefheart´s Trout Mask Replica from the library. You gotta love an artist who plays tenor and alto sax at the same time.

Yeah, but Roland Kirk sounded good (usually) and didn't wear funny pants. Also, note in that first picture he's also holding a clarinet and often played the flute. |

Husker Du...tried and tried, but just didn't "get" em. Sorry Mouldy.
Guided By Voices did one of my top 30 songs (Teenage FBI), some of their stuff is awesome (Glad Girls, Motor Away), and some just plain sound crappy. Put me off buying an album if it's gonna be so hit and miss..
I'm still trying to figure out Talking Heads- And She Was would be in the top 30 too but...Remain In Light..is it THAT good of an album?

Public Enemy and Beastie Boys.
I know they're hugely influental and widely acclaimed but I just cannot sit through their albums.
Doog, try getting into Husker Du through New Day Rising. I first tried Zen Arcade which didn't work for me.

REM is another band that i cannot get into. but i think a lot of that has to do with old biases that i have yet to drop...but i'm trying ringo, i'm trying REAL hard. (where's that quote from, huh?)

The wise one is showing the way? Anything they recorded in the nineties makes me want to pour boiling oil in my ears, but I'll trust you try out their early stuff.
I'm only beginning to open up to Pink Floyd.
Agree with Broken Face though - much of the stuff on my list is simply because of my own prejudices.
Placebo and Ash are another 2 that I find ok, just can't see what the big fuss is about - but then that's what music is about isn't it? |
