How do you sleep? On your back or belly? Or side? I think about this a lot while falling asleep. I go through long stretches of sleeping on my back, years and years, and then I decide it is time to start sleeping on my side and then I have to decide which side. I know this must sound nutty. But I do wonder and I am forever asking friends about how they have their bodies when they go to sleep.

On my side, either one, usually wrapped around a pillow in the fetal position. I've gotten to the point where it's practically impossible to fall asleep with my legs straight.

Normally on my belly.
Left arm under my head. Face in towards armpit.
Right leg straight. Left leg out.

Brian, that is so sweet! About 10 minutes ago I realized that by coincidence every guy I have ever slept next to (not a high number) slept on his back and I wondered why that was, then I realized it was so I could have my head on his chest, and how sweet that is. Lucky Ms. Broken Face!

On my tummy with one hand under my head. I also usually have to have one arm under my tummy to keep my back from hurting.
I'm kind of particular but I almost always fall asleep quickly, but that's partially because it's usually 1am when I hit the sack (up at 7am). |

On my back or sides a lot lately, but I always seem to wake up sore.
This morning I woke myself up when I started doing these weird windmill arm stretches while lying on my side.

Someone warned me about sleping on my belly because your face was pressed on the pillow all night and it was bad for your facial skin...don't know if that really makes a big difference. I always sleep on my back or side with arms and legs wrapped around a body pillow. Worst back sleeping incident was when former Mrs. Superabounder was sleeping against me with her arm draped across my chest. As I slumbered peacefully, she had some kind of bad dream and slapped her arm and open palm violently on my sternum scaring the daylights out of me. She thought it was pretty amusing. |

If I sleep on my back, my feet must hang off the end of the bed-- otherwise it feels like my knees are being bent backwards. I am 6'5" so it probably has a bigger effect on me than most people. And when I go to bed in a hotel, the first thing I do is un-tuck the damned sheet from around the mattress so I don't feel like my ankles are being bent downward. I absolutely hate it when a sheet or blanket is tucked in at any point around the bed.
Tip: If you sleep on your belly, rest your head on the bed and get that pillow out of there.

those beds in England are pretty short. i'm 5'9, and my feet were hanging off the bed in my hotel room. what's up with that?

At least you had a hotel room. Last time I was in London I think there was literally no floor in the room-just bed/nightstand/TV. You had to sit on the bed to open the door.
By the way, belly sleep for me = drool. |

I never can remember. I've talked about this with people - felt that if I could remember what position I wake up in, then I would know what the best postition to get into to fall asleep would be, but for some reason, I can never remember what position I wake up in...perhaps because the first thing i do upon awakening is move from that position.
I know that I can't sleep on my stomach because my arms cause problems - if I sleep on them they go numb or some other Gallagher-like arm related problem. I think it is possible that I fall asleep more on my back than in any other position.
Superabounder - i agree, drool - back or sides.
I guess I'm going to have to go with back. As much as i would like to say that I don't really sleep in any position and that my cat ends up on top of me always so I could seem to be as cool as floop, i cannot. The evidence (or lack thereof) leads moe to the conclusion that there is reasonable doubt as to the validity of the theory that I fall asleep in any position other than on my back. Can you tell I just got out of a 6-hour jury deliberation? Mistrial. DO NOT ask.
I sleep on my back because I never know when some woman is going to burst into my bedroom, disrobe and curl up beside me with her head on my chest.
I mean - you know.
It could HAPPEN. (re: Judy Tenuda) |

That's a funny question Kathryn...I sleep on my side, my right side, like dayanara in the fetal position, but I have to sleep holding tight my beloved one, that's how I fall asleep, after that I just don't know.

Last night it was passed out on my front, head down in the bed, fully clothed. I woke in a daze at half 4.
when the sheets are cold I curl up in a ball, like an 'ickle hedgehog, then slowly stretch out to slumber.
at night, my fave is on my front with arms wrapped round the pillow, but in the mornings I almost always seem to wake with a pain. I use to love it when my ex would rest her head on my chest and sleep, she would fit right in there like a jigsaw puzzle and it felt so good.
I miss that. |

I'm very specific about sleeping and falling asleep...I don't usually fall asleep easily unless certain criteria are met. That's why I somewhat feel awkward sleeping with someone with the cuddling and all that cause sometimes I just can't fall asleep. I first lay on my right side, then I flip over to my left, and I usually fall asleep then. It's weird.
I guess I just wasn't made for these times. |

I do that flipping from my right-side over to my left-side thing too, but I think I end up back on my back before I fall asleep. And I find quite often that I curl my wrists inwards while I'm falling asleep for some reason. |

On my right side holding my partner with my left arm. My right arm goes numb sometimes and I wake up looking for my arm. Horrible feeling.

On my side, certain physical constraints dictate that I cannot sleep any other way, one arm under the pillow with right knee tucked up. I don't actually have great movement in my left hib so that leg does what it wants. If I sleep in my bed which I don't that often I have to try to take up as much room as possible so sleep on a funny diagonal, double bed seems too empty otherwise. Mostly I sleep on the sofa though, or the floor.

Not to sound vain but years ago a beauty-editor friend clued me in to the "sleeping on your stomach = wrinkles" thing and I avoid falling asleep like that. I probably think this song is about me.

If I fall asleep on my back, I frequently get those spinning-rocking-falling feelings, and even sometimes night terrors (you know when you feel like someone is in the room and you're scared sh*tless and can't move).
That's why I try to lay on my side to fall asleep, and go back and forth left to right. I'm a pretty restless sleeper, like Jop. I usually wake up feeling like I've run a mini-marathon.

Man, I've had that happen a couple of times (both times in the same bedroom and bed) and they are terrifying. What's up with that phenomenon? There must be a medical or physiological explanation, it can't be that the devil's trying to kill you, which is what it feels like.

I go to sleep on my back with my right arm over my eyes. Very occasionally I'll go to sleep on my right side, but never the left - it just don't feel right.

I am trying to remember which Eastern religion (Buddhism? Hinduism?) says to sleep on which side (left?) so if you die while sleeping your soul will be able to escape your body and join the cycle of reincarnation. Or something like that.
Oh and thank you Superabounder.

I think the "night terrors" phenomenon is pretty common kathryn. It is scary.
I've also had what had to have been an out-of-body experience, that seemed to be coupled with a night terror. That was weird.
