my vote:

KINSEY

sure, a good film. interesting bit of history. but deserving of the endless gushing praise? i think no.

there are still some films i need to see before i come up with my top 10, but i can already say that SIDEWAYS will be #1.

I'm not gonna make friends here but : Spiderman 2.
not bad but not good either. (well, if you remove Octopus and the elevator joke, it is quite bad)

spiderman 2 is definetely in my top 10 films of the year

dare i say the most overrated was the passion of the christ? (i still enjoyed certain aspects, but i don't know if it was the masterpiece it was lauded as)

Shark Tale was pure trash. My five year old wanted to leave halfway through it.

Wait, this isn't "worst films of 2004". I must be in wrong thread.

LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL was overrated.

other past highly overrated films:

TRAFFIC
SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE
THE ENGLISH PATIENT (perhaps the most overrated film of all time)

ps. BIG FISH was one of my favorites of last year. whatchutalkinabout Newo?

I really like Tim Burton´s films but this one, for a film with mermaids, circus freaks and giants in it, left me really cold. Cardboard characters too. And what was the rather heavyhanded moral anyway, something like it´s better to live with fictions?

I confess to liking Spiderman 2, it was exactly my brainwave as I was hungover and glad to see a film in English for once. Wait why am I making excuses? Kirsten Dunst, people.

i didn't think BIG FISH was trying to say it's better to live in fiction. but maybe, how you perceive things is what matters; a big part of life is how your approach it. also, i kind of took it as an ode to storytelling in general. (and filmmaking).. surly you would admit that things would be pretty shitty without stories..

did you ever read the book?

Personally, I honestly found myself waiting for the film to hurry up and end. It was lacking.

i didn't read the book. but i thought Ewan MacGregor was excellent in it and i liked the theme of story. i, like Kathryn, was touched too. which is saying something for someone who's heart is made out of snow cone

The United States of Leland. Not overrated, just have to mention it. Starts out with Gigantic in background, and includes another Pixies tune and SMYT too. The songs are used as a drapery to heroin addiction, but I still liked the movie right away.

Since this has nothing to do with overrated films anymore, I suggest people (I don't know if it will get a release outside the ROI) try to see Adam & Paul, great little Irish film.

That´s the moral I did think came across in Big Fish, the father for example, he was just all stories and no centre. Of course it´s possible to write enigmatic characters like that and have me care about them, but not here. Except for the part I liked about Danny DeVito´s lawyer being the clown stood beside him, I thought it was a rather drab and sickly Frank Capra throwback. The voiceover is clumsy as hell too.

i thought the point of big fish was that your life is whatever you make of it - you can focus on the negative aspects, or you can make it seem like a wonderful, epic tale. all of the characters in his stories, when revealed at his funeral, were real; he just exaggurated them to a great degree. his life was still extraordinary, except his telling of it made it even more so

WINGS OF DESIRE is classic. i love Wim Wenders. one of my favorite Wim Wenders is the harder-to-find KINGS OF THE ROAD. anyone seen that?

brian - never saw MATCHSTICK MEN. don't know if i'm into seeing her play a 13 year old. but i am into her.
