I'm a big Pixies fan, so I'm assuming I'll like Frank Black's solo projects. I'm looking to buy an album, on iTunes they have Frank Black listed as an artist with albums Teenager of the Year, Oddballs, Frank Black Francis. They also have Frank Black and the Catholics with Frank Black and the Catholics, Pistolero, Dog in the Sand, Devil's Workshop, and Show Me Your Tears. Which do you think I should get?
Cliffs Notes: New to Frank Black's solo music. Unsure of what album to get. iTunes has these albums, what do you think?
Frank Black Teenager of the Year Oddballs Frank Black Francis
Frank Black and the Catholics Frank Black and the Catholics Pistolero Dog in the Sand Devil's Workshop Show Me Your Tears

Read the forum some more kool-aid, we got opinions on every album, and the rest, floating round here. To want advice as to which FB albums too buy, too varied. There is no definitive answer.
Buy 'em all. Yep! Get 'em all. The most obvious and honest answer I have.
If that's too much, start with FB, then FB+Cs then SMYT. Beginning, Middle and End.
Happy listening whichever you get. Then when you done, come back with the topic:
So who's better, Frank black or Pixies? |

I don't see Frank Black the album in the above list, so I'd go with the next one (chronologically) - Teenager of the Year |

Be careful though, "big Pixies fan", you'll find Frank Black solo to be very different from the stuff he did with the Pixies. If you like Trompe Le Monde, get Teenager Of The Year. Others will just put a big questioning mark above your head. They are all excellent albums, but not for someone who's on a Pixies high. That's my opinion anyway, I'm sure many here will disagree.

why buying from Itunes if you want a complete album? you would pay about the same money if buying the actual cd's...anyway, I would go with Teenager of the year first |

Teenager Of The Year def. Also, Devil's Worskhop is pretty underrated, perhaps because it is so short, just under 37 minutes.

The very first Frank album I heard, after listening to the Pixies for quite a while, was Black Letter Days, and that started my obsession with Frank. I LOVE that album and highly reccommend it; but, of course, you should (obviously not immediately, but eventually) get all of Frank's albums, because they really all sound different and are all fantastic. Which also means that if you get one and hate it, don't quit listening to it and even if you still hate it, continue buying his other albums, because you may very well love them.

The Cult Of Ray is muchmaligned but has Punk Rock City and Men In Black on it, which settles the deal for me.

(I don't disagree with your opinion E.Lady)
But Kool-Aid. Don't forget Pixies songs are Charles Thompson songs as much as the Frank black stuff.
You may even look at it like this; Pixies, Frank Black solo, Catholics, Honeycomb. They're all chapters in the musical life of Mr.T. Charles wrote the majority of the songs we listen to, whether it's with the catholics or the Ps. Okay they differ in genre or sound, but at the root they're songs by the man.
The Catholics and Pixies were just a way of fulfilling and doing justice to the songs in his head. That's why it's only him who could disband the two groups. I love the Pixies, but I know it's Charles who made and can break them.
And if you like the Pixies, try Hang On To Your Ego (first FB album). It will blow you away. |
