Pixies

q: Alright Joey, Charles, Kim, David, thanks for doing the show tonight. How was it all for you? How did it feel out on stage tonight?

a: Pixies: Excellent, very good, good.

q: You have to give our audiences credit. First of all, it’s Austin, so you know the audiences are going to be good to begin with, but they only allow us to have 320 or so people in the studio, and I thought they made a lot of noise for 320 people, out there tonight.

a: Charles Thompson: Yeah, I was, uh, quite happy with the adoration.

q: Now Charles I know at least you and I have talked…

a: Kim Deal: (laughs)

q: …quite happy with the adoration, yeah, I think adoration is a good word for it. There’s something about Pixies fans that, adoration definitely does describe the reaction. I was out in the studio for a while myself tonight, just watching the crowd, and it was obvious that there were some true blue original Pixies fans and then there were other people who obviously weren’t even alive back then. What’s it been like when you’ve been out on this reunion tour, in terms of the crowds, the fans who have come out to see your shows compared to what it was like back in the early days.

a: Charles Thompson: Well, Kim made the observation early on in the tour that there are lots more gals in the audience there used to be. It used to be heavily populated by boys, but now there are lots of gals too.

a: David Lovering: I actually noticed that the first show we did on the Reunion Tour. {Laughs.} It was this little joke, just being a male.

a: Kim Deal: Did ya? Did ya?

a: David Lovering: Well I did, ya know, yeah. I think in the front row. But yeah

a: Kim Deal: And they’re younger, we had a really young crowd last night, in uh, Houston.

a: David Lovering: Yeah, as a matter of fact, it was the youngest.

a: Joey Santiago: This is by far the smallest show we’ve done, right?

a: Others: Yeah.

a: Joey Santiago: Capacity wise, so it’s probably real exciting for people to see.

q: On the entire tour, the smallest?


a: Joey Santiago: Yeah, yeah, 300 something. Yeah.

q: This is a question I know you’re tired of answering, but just for our benefit, one more time, if you don’t mind, would you like to tell us the story again, of how this reunion tour came together, why you guys decided to do this in the first place?
a: Charles Thompson: Um, what’s that? (to Kim) (singing) “I started a joke, on the radio, in London, and the whole world was crying...”

a: Others: (laughing)

a: Charles Thompson: And so I said “oh well, what the hell? The cat’s outta the bag,” so I called Joe and Joe called Kim I think, and Kim called Dave.

a: Kim Deal: I think Joe called David.

a: Charles Thompson: Something, it was something like that. Yep. I made a joke, I made a joke.

q: But this is not what you expected at the time, obviously right?

a: Kim Deal: I didn’t think it was. Joe called me in like the very beginning of September and we didn’t know if we were going to do it, we were just talking and then on MSNBC, on that ticker thing, it said something about the Pixies Reunion Tour. I thought that was something, I was like, “What are we doing on there?” That’s crazy.

a: Joey Santiago: That’s right, the CNN ticker, during the 9/11 anniversary.

a: Kim Deal: Yes, it was.

a: Joey Santiago: Yeah, so it was really weird.

a: David Lovering: And then I heard that that spacecraft on Mars, I’m not kidding, that they used “Where Is My Mind” as a wake up call.

a: Joey Santiago: Oh, that’s right they did.

a: David Lovering: … to wake up to the computer, when they shut it down to reboot it or something.

a: Charles Thompson: Whoo. (laughs)

a: Kim Deal: And I started seeing people in fashion ads, and there would be the rock fashion ad, and they’d wear a Death to the Pixies shirt.

q: So, it must have been a little bizarre at times, part of the whole experience.

a: Kim Deal: It’s kind of neat.

a: Charles Thompson: And then Bill Clinton jammed with us in Oxford, Mississippi, that was weird.

q: You’re not serious, are you serious?

a: Charles Thompson: (does imitation of Clinton playing saxophone)

q: Have there been highlights and lowlights, or has is been just one steady blur?

a: Charles Thompson: Um, well, no, I guess there’ve been some notable experiences. I was trying to think of like a low one or something, what was low? I guess there wasn’t much. We played at a heavy metal festival in Vienna and they weren’t too keen on us.

a: Kim Deal: On mine and Joe’s birthday.

a: Charles Thompson: Yeah, that was on your birthday. Yeah, so that was kind of low I guess. But uh, other than that, I don’t, what was your favorite show? (to Joe)

a: Joey Santiago: I don’t know, they were all good, uh, Vancouver, or the very first one.

a: Kim Deal: Portugal, I liked.

a: David Lovering: Barcelona. That was insane.

a: Kim Deal: And Austin City Limits, doing that is good.

a: David Lovering: Yeah, yeah. (nods)

q: How much TV have you done and generally do you like the whole experience of doing television?

a: Charles Thompson: I think this our first one. When the band first started we mostly just did cable access, I remember doing mostly cable access shows, and we did eventually do a TV show, and we haven’t done one since, except for tonight I think. I think David Letterman was the last one.

q: Well, it seemed pretty natural just to get up there and do your thing tonight. V?

a: Joey Santiago: We have festival experience with the cameras, so we were not nervous. You’ve just gotta think about that. Cause they have Jumbo-trons now, so there’s cameras flying everywhere on those things. Plus, this is a little show.

a: Kim Deal: And the studio is nice and dark, it’s got club lights kind of.

q: We try to make it feel as natural as you can with a television studio. That’s why we serve beer to people and loosen the crowd a little bit

a: Charles Thompson: We’re glad the cameras aren’t below us, down there, because of the whole (gets up and does a goofy dance and sings a little)

q: Having the stage low the way we designed it works really well, it kind of draws the crowd into the center, the vortex of what’s happening. You’ve got so many songs to draw from, and I know tonight was not a normal experience because you actually had a set list of sorts, and we appreciate the fact that you were willing to do that. But ordinarily, how do you decide what to do? Are you the guy, Charles, who takes the lead on this?

a: Charles Thompson: I guess so, but we’re really just drawing on the same thirty songs or so at the moment, I would say, and I don’t know why we picked those thirty, I think they’re the ones that are the most popular, or the ones that are easiest to remember maybe, I’m not even sure what, just sort of like “those 30” seemed obvious.

q: Another question I know you’ve been asked, and I don’t know what today’s answer is, but there’s been about writing some new songs or recording some new music. Where does that stand as of today?

a: Charles Thompson: Well, Kim did one.

q: Tell us about that Kim.

a: Kim Deal: Well, there was this Shrek movie, Shrek 2, (mumbles, babbles playfully). We did a Warren Zevon cover.

q: Good choice.

a: Kim Deal: Yeah, his son Jordan called us, and he had a song picked out for us, “Ain’t That Pretty At All.”

a: Charles Thompson: So, we’ve done two songs.

a: Kim Deal: We did that in Vienna.

q: More to come? Are you guys even thinking that far ahead, as far as where this might go from here?

a: Charles Thompson: I guess we don’t chart out a lot of stuff. We tend to just be like … “what are we doing today?” You know, tomorrow is kind of tomorrow, you know?

a: David Lovering: One day at a time.

a: Charles Thompson: Yeah, baby steps. I don’t know we just haven’t nailed it, I don’t know. It’s cause we talk about other stuff more often, you know like, some of the Pixies are very fond of the football, for example, there’s a lot of football talk, a lot of talk about, I don’t know, what do we talk about? Movie actors, a restaurant that someone ate at you know.

q: Well, it seems to work, maybe it’s better that way. You spend too much time talking about music and what you’re going to do next and if you’re going to record a record.

a: Charles Thompson: I’ll answer like this. I mean, what else does a band do? They go and play gigs and then I guess when you’re kind of done doing that for a while you kind of go, “well, let’s go play some more gigs,” or “let’s go record some new songs,” and that’s all bands do I think. That would be why it wouldn’t be this thing we’re like thinking about, “when we stepped into the studio to record our first song in twelve years.” Plus, we did that with Kim’s song, the Shrek 2 movie, so that kind of broke the ice, and the idea of going back into the studio, that “oh my god, I can’t believe we’re back” that kind of is over with, so I don’t know, it doesn’t seem like anything, either way.

a: Charles Thompson: Yeah, it was a real thrill to be on a show that we’ve been watching for so many years, a show that’s so highly regarded among so many different kinds of people.
