I thought this was amusing. I've never heard of contact music, is it normally so tabloidy?
http://www.contactmusic.com/new/xmlfeed.nsf/mndwebpages/pixies%20not%20trying%20to%20please%20fans
quote: Reformed rockers THE PIXIES are fiercely opposed to making music to please their loyal following - and are considering recording an album fans are bound to hate.
The DEBASER stars are intent on writing a host of new tunes, even though their fans would prefer them just to tour and not tarnish their acclaimed back catalogue.
Singer FRANK BLACK quips, "(Guitarist) KIM (DEAL)'s perspective is like, 'The fans wouldn't want us to mess around with the old repertoire by adding to it - so let's do that. F**k them!'
"She's dying to make an album of waltzes just to p**s everyone off. There's at least a little bit of rebel left in us, and Kim has most of it."
A monkey will eat dirt if you make him. |

I hate to be the pessimist, but I don't buy it.
A reunion tour where they only play the "hits" and won't touch material even from their less well accepted (but still loved by many) albums strikes me as crowd pleasing.
That said, I'm in a kinda' pissy mood, so my perception is coloured.

yeah, their tours are as crowd-pleasing as you could make them. that site is funny. totally tabloid-esque.
i think "The DEBASER stars" would be a good name for a band though

Ok so then will the whole new ablum be off if we're like-- we love waltzes-- they're great to mosh to??
You know how us Pixies fans love moshing. I am dusting off my patent leather combat boots as we speak.
Bring it on Kim-- We're hardcore enough to take on what you throw down. You badass you!!
PS Floop I think you are so right Debaser Stars would be a fab band name (seriously)!!!

There's nothing better than NEW, fresh material. Because it's Now, it's Real. I'll worry re: if it sucks later. If Mission Of Burma can put out its 1st new album in 22 fuckin' years and be as great as it is...........then.
In fact , I'd prefer new Pixies music and NO tour to another tour w/out new stuff (even if they played all the stuff they didnt play this time, eg. "Trompe.." , "Bossa..."
The bottom line for me is this: Frank Black can write great songs in his fuckin' sleep. And we all know they all still have the chops.
People (pussies?) who don't want new stuff for FEAR!! that it won't stand up to the earlier stuff should just drink their warm glass of milk, watch Larry King Live and go to bed. (If mommy or wifey lets u stay up that late) |

Heh heh, I actually thought about that after I posted, but I wasn't about to refute my own point. :)

I don't think I'd ever want to hear a Pixies album if I ever consider it to have been written just for the fans. The music has to please the songwriter first, then not give a toss who listens to it. if you like, then that's fine. If not, well that's just fine too. (And an audience can be pretty disappointing when the lights come on and you can see their faces)
I've been slightly confused by the choice of songs they've played too. Ok, if some of the songs were a bit too consuming to relearn, then fair enough. But these guys and gal are so talented, and have written way more complex songs over the years than the Pixies stuff. Why just play the obvious? I don't know their thinking behind that one. Or their view on what 'fans' would and wouldn't want to hear.
i love the quote bill.g. frank is the melody maker, let dave and kim be the rhythm, just add a sprinkle of Joey pixie dust then you got yourself magic. simple. |

Well, I do really hope for a new album. Anything by these guys is going to kick some major butt. I have a feeling with all the musical growth all have them had made since the break up, it's going to be better than their original material.
I do agree semibaby, that touring again with a new album is the way to go. Definately Trompe and Boss stuff too!!!
But I know that Frank and Joey now have families and Kim and Dave have priorites too (I am assuming). Not to mention the side projects they have going on. I just hope that they don't feel pressured by the fans to put out a new record, until they're ready. Just want what's best for them. |

whatever, this article is asinine. It says that Kim is the guitarist. Do your homework before you try to convince us that our favorite band is intentionally trying to dissapoint us.
