Ok So i just caught the letterman performance. And by"just" caught i mean that i waited all afternoon anticipating the one song. I had, like many others expected them to play the warren zevon cover but they played Monkey Gone To Heaven. It was good. Not great..just good. Paul played keyboards and added some weird part throughout the chorus which sort of ruined it for me. It was sort of a rave type light techno riff. I didnt like it too much but i can look past that. The other thing i took notice to was that Charles literally did not open his eyes during the whole song! I thought that was actually kind of neat. Maybe he's not used to the glasses he was wearing. Anyways it was a pretty cool thing to watch as i did not seem them on their warm up tour. So, as to create a point for the thread, what did everyone think?

Yea i liked that, and that weird techno thingy your talking about really is in the song on dolit, at least i think were talking about the same thing..Man i couldnt hear kim sing at all..just heard this little high pitched "GONE TO HEAVEN" ah well, was still good tho, i liked the sound of it, Dave sure looks happy to be playing. |

I must say, that was the most laid back rendition of Monkey I've ever heard. I did find Paul's accompanyment a little distracting, and yes, Kim's mic could have been a little louder. But they sure didn't come off like they did on the tour. Kim was dressed like a soccer mom; she was also missing her required three bottles of beer on stage. Joey and Kim also looked a bit out of place playing without a cigarette hanging out of their mouths or stuck in the fret of their instuments. Dave looked and played the same as they did on tour, but Frank never seemed to really get into it. I mean he really belted parts of that song when I saw them live (twice).
Anyway, it was nice to see them on the tube regardless.
Cheers.

Theres a string arrangement. Yes. But the thing Paul did in the chorus is most definitely not in the song. WE must have been talking about something different

It sounded a bit uninspired to me. Should they have rocked it? Yes. Did they? Nope. They're gettin' old and they gotta get theirs I suppose. |

and anyone who is whining about Paul, he would not have played that part unless asked specifically by the band, so blame them ;)
but yes, it's in the original, check again, trust me, it's strings + keys on the original, i thought it sounded fine. for their first TV appearance in 12 years, i thought it was well done. did i expect them to totally come out blazing high energy on TV? no. |

Paul was mixed too high for sure.
Everyone looked nervous to me except for Lovering. Frank's glasses were a hoot. It made me feel old watching them because I can remember watching some reunited "influential" bands on Letterman when I was a teenager and imagining what they were like in their prime...
The song choice was highly predictable and the performance was subdued. How great would it have been for them to come out blazing with "Planet of Sound"? I guess being in the middle of a seven show stint at the Hammerstein and having to tape a national TV show at 4PM takes the piss out of you.

Paul killed me though. Him and his foolish smile, I burst out laughing. Other than that it wasn't an extraordinary performance, but what do you expect. It's the Tonight Show. They all looked like " Hey, I can't wait to get outta here."

I'll have to check the mix on that. I've never noticed the keyboard part. And yes. Yes paul is very dangerous......and sharp.

Well I for one thought it was nice that they had Paul playing the orchestral parts on his synth, and I'm glad he appears to enjoy playing with them so much. There's been some discussion in another thread about when they did Trompe La Monde on Letterman back in '91 or '92, and Paul did a really great organ solo in the middle of the song that I wish they had put on the album version. |

Still trying to find a clip of this, if only to understand what is meant by "Kim dressed like a soccer mom."
I still believe in the excellent joy of the Frank |

Well dear... Whatever you'll say, everybody seem to be disapointed. I understand though I have not watched the performance. They played the "Monkey Song"... Well not exciting for us... The thing is: They (the pixies) did not try to please us (the die hard fans). Ok, they (I mean he) may have their (his) reasons, I do not criticize... They played a good song, catchy almost popular one. Did they try to convince new people? Tv is the occasion... Do you think, beside the fact they played a "potential hit" that they did what they had to do to convince new people in term of performance? (That's an actual question because I have not seen it). From these facts and questions what objective conclusion do you draw?
You have 1 hour...

Why *not* play Monkey? It the Letterman show after all. Casual listeners will say "I remember them!" and new listeners will say "Who were they again? Maybe I can find a greatest hits at Best Buy ... "
Paul looked really douchey in that clip. |

That quote from Ziggy sounds very right for Frank, maybe he was a Ziggy Wannabe considering all the stuff related to space and UFOs....

As Frank once said ...The majority of people are just like, `Play the monkey song!' ''! So I think that explains why he choose that one

Charlie played guitar, jamming good with Dave and Joey and that Kim from Ohio. he didn't played it left hand But knew many bars Became the special man, when he was in that Pixies band
Charlie really sang, wide closed eyes and quite no hairdo Like some (lucky)cat from Japan, he could lick 'em by screaming He could leave 'em to hang (wire) Came on so loaded man, well hung and Frank Black tan.
So where was the passion while the saucers tried to break our balls Just the beer light to guide Kim, So we bitched about his fans and should we crush his huge hands?
Charlie played for time, jiving us that we were voodoo The kids were just crass, he was the nazz With God given big ass He took it all too far but boy could he play guitar
Hanging on with his ego Charlie sucked up into his mind Like a preacher messiah When the kids had killed the man he had to break up the band.
Oh yeah Oooh Charlie played guitar!!!!!!

I doubt the Pixies asked Paul to play. It's probably just what you do if you appear and are asked by David Letterman. |

The part that Paul played is in the song. You can hear it in every chorus. Its strings being plucked and he played it just like the recording. They must have given him the music cause it sounded just like the recording. You have to turn it up pretty loud to hear it on the record but its there. |

Kim dressed like a soccer mom...that really sums it up in a nice, funny way. Anyhow, I liked it. Just for the fact I got to see them on TV. As for the song selection, I am just so grateful they didn't play "Here Comes your Man". Loved Charles' vocal is that performance.
Did i mention that Pixies were on TV??? So cool!

Well, seems I'm one of the few who really liked it! That keyboard part is most definitely on the album version (with real strings though).

yeh that wasn't so bad at all! the keyboard was very similar to the strings on the album.. the mix was maybe slightly too loud but it wasn't too bad, i thought. kim is such a star. |

I havent seen this yet but i wish they would have just played bone machine as loud as they could. As far as this type of performance, i remenber a personal favorite of mine which is They Might Be Giants doing 'Birdhouse' with doc Severenson and his orchestra on the Tonight Show.... It is cool to see your fave bands jam with other people ya know. well mi gonna go watch this/download it. later.p
