I'm reading Continental Drift right now, and I just can't seem to get into it. A friend recommended "Affliction" and "The Sweet Hereafter" (both made into movies), but my branch library only had Contiental Drift. Has anyone read any of Banks work? Should I keep going with Continental Drift? I want to like it, but it's not grabbing me. Help me, oh Denizens of Literature. |

Mike, just out of curiousity, how much of your income goes towards CDs and books?

I don't think I want to know the answer to that. I happen to think a healthy budget can include 70% devoted to music and books. But I got this book from the library! That's free! |

[hijack] Well, Carolyn, at the moment my rent and bills for, sorry I have to capitalise this it really makes me happy, THE NEXT YEAR ARE PAID UP, whew... I'm a student and the cash is tight, but the CD's make the nice noise and the books not only look nice, they smell nice, they pile up nice and reading books is loooovely. Besides, Charity shops are an excellent hunting ground, I think 90% of the books I've bought are second hand cheapo's (cf. Dead Souls, two Gogol paperbacks for £2.50 huzzah) and many of the record shops here now also sell books for cheaper than major bookstores, although there is something, dare I say, almost.. arousing about the smell of a bookstore... Yeah, it's a sad life I lead..
Coffee and smokes.. self explanitory, negates need for food bill also[/hijack]
Sorry speedy

Yes I will buy you a book, perhaps something in a Robert Munch mini? I've also said you could pull of a mini beautifully.
And Tre, there's no need to apologize. As I said, I encourage thread hijacking. If something is not interesting, take a box cutter to its throat and steer it in a new direction! |

Tre, where do you get the pound mark on your keyboard? Can I do that even tho I am typing from a country with a different currency? Is there an actual pound sign on your keyboard? If so, how does it differ from the pound key on your touchtone phone?

Is that a childrens author speedy? Just what exactly are you trying to say, huh, huh?
Kathryn, I'm not sure how she does it but you can go into Word and Insert and Symbol and copy stuff from there.

You mean there isn't a special keyboard that special people typing in England just get to use? I was thinking that she had a pound key above her number 4 key, the way I have an American dollar sign and you have a Canadian dollar sign.

Yeah, I'm sure my Canadian dollar sign is about 20-30% smaller than your US dollar sign ;)

vaguely on topic (I just thought of it) my ex sent me a parcel of presents a few weeks ago, there were two books 'Lyras Oxford' (the prelude to the follow on from 'His Dark Materials') and 'Life of Pi' - Yann Martel
There was a note, it read "let me know if life of pi is any good, it looks interesting!!" I started it, and then read about five other books in the interim because I can not get into it at all. The people I know who have read this book rave about it but I'm still struggling to pick it up again. Anyone got any encouraging words?

a good friend of mine just read it and recommends it. he said it starts out fairly conventionally in the beginning and then becomes a story about a boy and a lion getting stranded on a lifeboat together..
you shouldn't accept gifts from exes though. burn them!

Burn them!?
Burn the free things?? No no no my friend
I didn't pay for them! Hitler could have sent them and I wouldn't burn the free things (not that I think Hitler would have sent me a book about an indian boy) I accept them with obvious disdain though, in a .. 'well if you must send me presents'.. manner
Very much a 'don't think this makes me like you more' kind of way
Besides, he's "ordered" my christmas present, I should at least see what that is before I get all burny do you not think?

They are apparently more bitter than you tre...or they are afraid you are weak enough to slip back into a bad relationship and then they won't have you at their disposal as much...cause if you go back to your ex, then... Oh, forget it. You know what I mean...happens more in real life than on a msgboard...
Keep the stuff...especially if that stuff is functional, practical, useful.

ok, i was exaggerating a bit. but i strongly believe in cutting off contact with exes until it's possible to actually be friends (down the road)..
i'm watching a friend of mine go through this right now. he and his girlfriend are broken up, but they keep seeing each other.. or "talking about" the relationship to try and gain some "closure".. it's like, fucking don't talk any more. that's closure.
i think staying in contact can hamper you from moving on... just my opinion. from personal experience.
but no, i wouldn't waste good free stuff either. i admit. (like the frozen chile peppers from Santa Fe New Mexico my girlfriend gave me before we broke up)

'Life of Pi' was okay. It didn't shake my faith or make me belive in God (I do, but the jacket made it seem like the book was a revelation). I thought it was more 'cute' than anything. It got a lot of play around here because Yann Martel was the writer in residence at our library.
Much better, life changing, God-affirming type book:
Skinny Legs and All by Tom Robbins.
FANTASTIC novel. I can't say enough good things about it. Just read it. |
