Yes, the correct expression is "to take up a collection."
Anybody else notice how floop is being aaaaaaaawfully quiet all of a sudden? It's as if he's using his last few pre-5,000 posts judiciously.

actually i was on a date last night, but sadly, not with Jennifer Connelly. it went really well, but it's still sad that it wasn't Jennifer Connelly.

she's one of the more interesting people i've met in a while. she's getting her PhD in Primatology. graduated from college when she was 18 (strange but true).. studied in Indonesia.
she has that ultra-smart-and-nerdy-but-also-very-hot combination i like. it's a good one.
i think i impressed her with my vast bigfoot knowledge, most of which i thank KOK for (KOK, this would be your dream woman, i'm sorry to say. .)

Very cool. Does she go to UCLA? They have a good anthropology department. Does she do fieldwork?
When I was a kid I had a big crush on Jane Goodall. Something about a pretty woman with a lovely British accent working in jungle impressed me as an 8 year old kid. Still does. Good luck, floop. |

darwin - we actually talked about Jane Goodall. she said that in the Primatology world there are people who like Jane Goodall and people who don't. i think she's in the latter group. the things you learn .

People criticise Jane Goodall for doing things like habituating her chimps by giving them bananas (which may alter their behavior) and she wasn't very quantitative (just descriptions of behaviors and family relationships), but she was one of the first to spend so much watching primates in their native habitat. A pioneer. So, she didn't do it perfectly.
My wife's major advisor (she's got a PhD too) was Sarah Hrdy, who is another famous woman primatologist. She primarily studied macaques in India (Hrdy, not my wife). |

Oh, yeah, I forgot to add my one Jane Goodall story: a friend of mine's a private pilot and he flew her someplace a couple of years ago and she had with her a stuffed toy chimp that she talked to during the flight and that she strapped into the seat next to hers. True.
If anybody wants, I can burn for them a copy of the Raffi song about Jane Goodall.
