I don't want to discuss Bowie doing Cactus again so instead I'll tell you that I've been playing B-Sides and bonus tracks again and the one that stuck out this time was Village of the Sun. There's something very comforting when Charles ruminates on the universe in his songs.
But I'll be more than just a little proud To think that the opinions of rocks and of clouds would even give us recognition.

me too. lots of bonus tracks/ b-sides lately. right now it's the peel sessions and ssmvgd.
does anyone know how i can get my hands on the b-sides that are just live versions of album tracks (for free)? for instance the 'i don't want to hurt you' ep, the 'nadine' ep, and so on.
i'm also looking for the 'hello recording club' songs, live thursday june 24, and "the man who was too loud" from the peel session with teenage fanclub.
if anyone can help out, i'd be muchly appreciative. muchly.

Tight Black Rubber is still doing it for me. Completely hooked, especially on that insane switch from chorus into second verse and that little lamb skip after the line "Everywhere that Mary went".

I've been listening to "The History Song" from the Lille, Aeronef show a LOT lately. I even got the version by The Good, the Bad, and the Queen from itunes so I could figure out the lyrics. I very much prefer the version by Frank and the Boys. I wonder what the chances are that Frank might record this one some day...

Hell yes, fbc. I love all versions of that song, too, especially the studio version and the one Brian and Dean made from the Saskatoon show last year. One of my favorite things in the world is listening to "Honeycomb" and then letting it start again when "Sing for Joy" is done. The strumming at the beginning of "Selkie Bride" is soothing, but it's even better when it follows the epic that is "Sing for Joy." My favorite FB lyric ever:
Mama killed a pumpkin, she thought it was a sweet. She put it on the table, but it was still meat. She forgot the sugar again.
Daddy came home, she had tears in her eyes. He said, "Gimme grilled cheese and paper bag French fries." See, he forgot the sugar again.
Please pardon me, for these my wrongs. |

Loving the new Bluefinger stuff! Big appreciation of Tight Black Rubber, but also charmed by Lolita- it works on so many levels, what a fantastic, poignant and dark imagining of Brood's relatonship with/ impact on his daughter!

This IS soooo good live! Does anyone know if FB has any more Herman Brood 'covers' lurking on the net that didn't make it onto Bluefinger, or if this is the only one he recorded? |

Yes. That's been played alot here, too. I don't know about anybody else, but i'm still under the spell of Threshold Apprehension. There's certain moments in that song where the speakers get turned up to the max. It just kicks too much arse. Way too much for my system to handle. Tonight while it was playing in the car I told my girlfriend "I fuckin' love him". She laughed. She understands.
Tonight I want the universe to know how much Frank Black rocks my world.

I love how the record store shoppers (teenage girls) start giggling at first when FB started singing Duke of Earl at some in store performance, but then they get into it (Youtube). That says a lot about FB's whole career. And the Hello Recording Club version is just beautiful.

I was listening to the Hello Recording Club version when I posted. It's probably my favourite ever acoustic recording of Frank Black.

Duke of Earl rules. My favourite ever acoustic recording of FB is So. Bay from KCRW's Open Road. http://www.kcrw.com/music/programs/or/or990620frank_black
Or, shit I can't decide, The Marsist from Podcast 14.
Or Two Reelers from the Christmass DVD. Oh bugger, that's torn it.

For once, it's Pixies song, not a solo FB song, that's got me under a spell: "Motorway to Roswell." During his interview with BBC Radio 1 the other day, he was talking about how he wasn't able to get the Pixies back in the studio, and he said, "I tried hard, but I could not," and chuckled a bit, I guess to signal he was referencing the lyric from that song: "He tried hard, but he could not make it." Aaaaaanyhoo, I had that floating around in my head all week, and I had to put on the song, and I discovered it like I never had before. Is that EDF on the keys? He produced that album, right? What a great song. Also, somewhere in the middle, Kim plays a couple funky notes on the bass, and they sound really cool. I listened to that song about 20 times in a row today.
There's a perfect explanation for the shit that I've been in. As soon as I find out, I'll let you know. |

I've just listened to 10 different versions of Dead Man's Curve in a row. Why? Well, I have no idea. It's a great song though.

"Bluefinger" in my car and at work, over and over.
Sometimes my entire Frank collection on iTunes in shuffle mode. 12 gigs of bliss.
Also the new Gogol Bordello, the new TMBG and a little Grinderman here and there.
I was on a Captain Beyond kick for a while, but I can only take the '70s in small doses. Even at the time. Per another thread in this forum, "Dancing Madly Backwards (On A Sea Of Air)" would be a fun Frank cover. |

I'm listening to Living On Soul at the moment, oh wait, live version of Cold Heart Of Stone now. It's all good!

The demo version of I'm Amazed on FBF where he sings Kim's part. I wish he'd kept it for himself, it's a great melody that was all but buried on Surfer Rosa. |

All My Ghosts. When I'm feeling down I can put this on and for 3 minutes and 32 seconds the world is perfect. Absolutely perfect.
If my head ever explodes, it will be because it has come to realise it will never be able to truly handle the brilliance of this song. If I could live to be several hundred I would still listen to this song every day and be continually amazed by its power and its beauty. And its Lyle.

I'm listening to "She's My Way". Myles (it was him right?) was right when he said it may be Frank's best song.
