Beautiful song stymie.
5 minutes ago near the end of the long drive back home, I was singing at the top of my lungs with all my might...
"Go find, go find your Saint, go find, go find your saint"

Oh yeah, I just listened to that after reading your post. One of Frank's bluesiest. Very Nice.
I wonder what that song is about. I know that, according to The Man, the meaning of his songs are always in the lyrics, it's just that many times one must look beyond the literal meaning of the lyrics. So what is the New House of the Pope? |

Not so fast, my friend.
"Thirteen big, salty tears. Like 13 little black dogs just born, still in their sacs, about to wake up, ready to howl at the world. There isn't a happy song in this bunch. I mean, maybe "Massif Centrale" has a ray of hope, but even then, I don't know, central France can be really cold and lonely. Maybe "Nadine" is a sexual celebration, but man, I get so sad when I think about her way back when . . ." -- Frank Black, from his press notes for Show Me Your TeFW the grain of the album's theme: 13 songs that represent 13 tears shed for the lost loves in Black's life. The piano dirge "New House of the Pope" reaches into the most maudlin chamber of Black's broken heart [and, from Black Letter Days] On the song "True Blue," there's this repeated phrase "In a little while." What happens is, in the following line, after "In a little while" the last syllable always is a syllable from that phrase, "in a little while." The music is in reverse too. There's the "A" section, then the "B" section. It goes back to the "A" section, but then the "C" section is really the "B" section played backwards. There's this whole theme in the lyric, what it's all about, and there's a whole frontward and backward kind of thing there. There's one-this is all theoretical-strain of humanity which devolves, if you want to call it that, and returns to the sea, from whence we came. Maybe tens of thousands of years from now, maybe people will hang out more by the seaside and gradually begin this march back to the ocean. The singer of the song is of that strain in the second half, but in the first half the singer is that strain of humanity that moves away not only from where we are on the land, but away from planet Earth. They go up. Up and out as opposed to the other direction. It's just this incredibly overcomplicated neurotic kind of thing. That's just some little ditty on the record, but sometimes that's what you do when you write a ditty. You become consumed by some little game you're playing. It's almost like it's not in your own control. It's happening very quickly. : The bottom line is, you've got a chord progression and a melody, and you need a lyric. You've got to write about something. Even if you write about nothing. Even if you write a bunch of abstract poetry, you've got to come up with something. If you pursue a subject matter that isn't some kind of crazy game in you brain that's you're going to forget-half the time I don't know what the songs are about, because I'm so consumed by some weird little abstract game in my mind. Five years later, "
As a songwriter, his depth is enormous. I am constantly amazed at the many meanings (apparantly, meanings from the author only limited by my effort to discover them) contained in his songs. |

I'm pretty sure this isn't what Frank had in mind, but thinking about popes brought to mind the Great Schism, which would make Avignon the "new house of the Pope."

I think the song's about him drinking and bumming and wishing his relationship weren't falling apart. I'm not big on analyzing lyrics, but this song's "meaning" seems somewhat obvious in that its title is a direct (and clever) translation of a damned good win e, Châteaune uf-du-Pape.
Meanwhile, listening to "Jane, queen of love" for the tenth time today. Shepher'ds Bush. Catholics. ROCK!
I still believe in the excellent joy of the Frank |

All My Ghosts
No doubt one of the best live-to-2-track songs on the best live-to-2-track album, Frank's guitar in the left ear and Lyle's guitar in the right. Now that's Rock and Roll!
Love the Green Acres theme
And, hey, gotta love "the heavenly angels, ... mating with some ladies ... children were giants..."
Also, the comparison of "the scene of gore"...and "the porno store"...

fbc,
Acoustic "Blast Off", one of the best.
I was really suprised when I bought my 2nd copy of DITS [1st one ruined by CD visor]and saw that it contained the 4 extra acoustic tracks. As stated in the liner notes, or somewhere, these were the demo's Frank and Joey made to pitch the album to the record company.

Thanks OldMan, i never knew Joey played on the demos. What an insight. I hear more than Frank, and the drum machine could just be someone with emaculate timing on the bass drum, but to have guessed it was the joe, makes these songs seem somewhat more magical.
I bought it the day I posted above. Could not contain my excitement. I need to get the others from spinART, but not too sure which ones are available. Took me awhile to track this one down. I know FB&TC includes extra tracks, maybe Pistolero. Do you know which records have been added to? |

Hey, fbc, I've looked here at the song database at FB.net, which has a nice collection of albums, singles, promos, etc...and when you go to the sellection, it states whether there have been additional releases of that same album, and if so, what has been added or changed.
I understand, but I don't have them, that the 1999 Song/Dragnet "Pistolero" from Japan, has "Valley of our Hope" added, and on Amazon and Ebay, I've seen the Japanese import of DITS with Le Cigare Volant as 1 extra track and without the 4 extra acoustic tracks.
I recently acquired Cult of Ray, UK limited edition with an extra CD containing "Village of the Sun", "Baby That's Art", "Everybody Got The Beat", and "Can I get a Witness".
Of course the promos and limited edition imports contain most of the extras, but every once in a while you get lucky, e.g. the re-issue of DITS with the 4 extra acoustic tracks.
I'm sure there are others, and it's really a joy to find them, like you did with DITS. |

Big thanks OldMan.
I got me a few of the promo stuff, but am trying to chase down any album with these little gems on. I knew of DITS through a thread, but couldn't remember the rest. It's just becasue I love these four acoustic tracks, the backbones to their fully distorted record versions. it's that joy of hearing a new track. Love it. Will go check out the SD here and see what I can find myself on the net. I got broadband today and this machines flyin'. Shouldn't take too long now. Thanks for the answer to my post. I'll let you know what treasures i uncover. |

Blast off. I usually have a dislike for songs over 4 minutes, but this one is quite enjoyable.
