Hey, watch out VoVat, you young whipper snapper you! How 'bout a little respect for your elders. I dare you to meet me down at my place, Nashville's Home for the Aging, and I'll challenge you to some shuffle board, bingo, or a prune juice chug-a-lug contest!

YOUNG man in a coffee can, Phooey!

Listening to St. Francis Dam Disaster motivates me to visit google and learn what happened during this disaster. google leads me to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Francis_Dam which then leads me back to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Black when saying:

L.A. based rock musician, Frank Black, has made several references to the disaster in his songs, including the tracks "St. Francis Dam Disaster" and "Olè Mulholland".

I'm back where I started. I think I found the end of the internet.

Hey scruvs, nice reseach, well done! I applaud your curiosity. [however, a truly outstanding post concerning this subject could include interviews from surviviors of this disaster and perhaps interviews of relatives (children, grandchildren) of William Mulholland, but nevertheless, your post is appreciated!]

[I'm not listening to anything right now, I just woke up, checked here at fb.net, and I'm on my way to the shower, but don't panic, I'm sure I'll have a FEW posts here later this morning, always do!]

I seem to recall hearing that "Olé Mulholland" wasn't really about the disaster, although I think it touches upon it.

Come on VoVat, it's right there in the article that scruvs posted, two separate projects by the same engineer, two separate songs with two separate subject matters.

Projecd 1: the Los Angles Aqueduct: "Mulholland, a self-taught civil engineer and native of Ireland, had designed and built what was then the longest aqueduct in the world, taking water from Owens Valley and bringing it to Los Angeles, some 235 miles (380 km) away...it was completed in 1913."

Project 2: "Small reservoirs were built in 1921 to supply the city in the event of a drought or damage to the aqueduct, but it was clear that a major reservoir was needed...not only because the reservoir would protect against drought; if the aqueduct were to be damaged by an earthquake or sabotage, the reservoir could provide ample water to Los Angeles until repairs could be made. The St. Francis Dam was designed to be 175 feet (53 m) tall and to hold back a reservoir of 30,000 acre-feet (37 million m³). Immediately after construction began in 1924, Mulholland decided to raise the dam 10 feet (3 m) and increase the capacity of the reservoir to 32,000 acre-feet (39 million m³).

Of course, "St. Francis Dam Disaster" is about the dam breaking and it's fairly obvious that "Ole Mulholland" is celebrating the construction of the Los Angeles aquaduct. So, IMNSHO, "Ole Mulholland" isn't about the dam disaster and I can't see anywhere in the lyrics where it touches upon it. Do you?

But of course, after all, you are a very passionate woman Kathryn, I picked up on that from my first few visits here.

But, remember, I couldn't handle it over there so I left the dark side and I'm trying to stay on this side now.

quote:
In a spectacular civic ceremony at the north end of the San Fernando Valley where the aqueduct terminates, William Mulholland said with characteristic brevity and lack of ostentatiousness: "There it is: take it." And that is exactly what Los Angeles citizens have done.

And another source quotes:

quote:
Job Harriman was a socialist politition who, after an unsuccessful run for Vice-President of the United States, ran for mayor of Los Angeles and nearly won. He later organized a utopian experiment in Antelope Valley, California in 1914 founded on the general principles of "equal ownership, equal wage and equal social opportunities." Llano del Rio, as it was called, was forced to move 3 years later (due to a lack of sufficient water resources) to an isolated area in western Louisiana.

i always thought frank sung "Joe".

It always sounded like "Joe" to me, too, but I think that's just because it's a much more common name than "Job." (Honestly, naming your kid "Job" sounds like you're wishing bad luck upon him.)

Alrighty then, let's get this party started..."Run" with Gordon Gano...Fuck it, I'm going copy and past a previous post of mine, conserve my creative juices...

"Run" with Gordon Gano ("And God bless Frank Black who gives the performance of a lifetime on Run with an apoplectic intensity unmatched anywhere by anyone. It's so great and done with such an intensity, Gano says, but there was a game plan. He had this concept that he would keep recording it and on each pass he would take up the intensity level. The take they ended up with is definitely well-past eleven.")

Powerful stuff! The Man's vocals here will stand toe-to-toe with any of his other hall of fame primal screaming.

"Valley of Our Hope"...I believe this one is from the DITS, Japanese Release, but I could be wrong...Lovin' the drivin' Country & Western beat...and the reference to Occam's Razor, which requires another bustin and dustin of the 'ole philosphy text books...

"Born in Chicago"...I told 'ja we was goin' to party...had to reach waaayyyy back for this one...Lovin' the muffled vocals by Black Francis and Joey on his six-string, and by the way, who the hell plays that opening and closing juice harp?....(in fact, I've got this little ditty on "repeat" mode for at least two more listens)

"Boom Chick a Boom"...oh yeah!

Ooohhhh, just got some validation from Mrs. CoffeeCan and Maggie...I was asked to put the headphones on, preceded by what I perceived to be two stupid questions..."What are you listening to?" and "Do you really like that?"...

Alright, let's slow it down a bit..."Fight With Honor"...I don't have a clue what The Man is singing on this one, but it sounds good! It's either in spanish, or, what a minute...I just heard "...high ho Silver...", I think...ah, who knows...I sure as hell can't make it out...

Alright, bring me back to the New Millennium..."I've Seen Your Picture"...lovin' the slow, dark, grovin' vocals of The Man on this one...DITS, ya gotta love it! [Plus, I used to be an engineer, Operating Engineer, Local 14, NYC...but I've never been a Sloganeer or a Profiteer, not that there is anything wrong with being one of those, just never done it, that's all...]

I see your 'Picture' and raise you 'So. Bay'.

chord structure / lyrics / distortion / quiet / loud / quiet / fenders / frank black / catholics / need i say more?
one helluva tune in the not only catholic catalogue, but Mr Black's too.

CoffeeCan, thanks for the Gano quote, that was a real treat.
And a four post riddle, nice. If you manage to keep posting here, don't think you're out the shadow of the TM.
It's just that you haven't checked your account balance for a while and now you're overdrawn. and in his debt.

quote:
You are stuck in a room with no windows or doors. a solid room. the only things in this room is a mirror and a table. how do you escape?

now breaking into headache would usually bust me out of any situation.
in this case, i bust the table in half.
put one half against the mirror.
now two halves make a whole
thats's where we make our escape.

Down In The Whole, singing "this wrinkle in time..."

"I'm Goin Down"

This has always been one of my favorite songs by The Man, and after reading Sarah's post in "Frank Black Making Noise";"FB covers my fave Springsteen song for 12" comp",...well...you know, I just had to play it...I'm home now and I can listen to it on the home hi-fi...time to shake some pictures off the walls (I've 15 minutes or so to myself, ha!)

[here's Sarah's her new post over in the other thread:
"i'm bumping this one because i wanted to let y'all know that it's available and that if you can't find it anywhere, we have it for your convenience on the friendly spinART website:

http://www.spinartrecords.com/site/popups/album.php?a=170

it's frank black. covering springsteen. on vinyl. can i get a hell yeah?"

[p.s., I gave her a big hell yeah, and some of you may want to also,...
I'm not saying, I'm just saying, coppish? ]
